Year of the Dragon
Hall of Fame
As with each other year, this year will rotate some cards into the Hall of Fame, some of which may come as a surprise. For the first time ever though, cards from past sets will rotate into the Classic set.
Mindgames is a very high-rolly, very weak card that all in all just poorly designed, create a lot of frustration for either you or the opponent no matter the result and has no business being in the Classic set. Lightbomb will rotate back into Standard to replace it, with the bonus is that the card removes the need for Priest to have a board clear printed in every set and made the class impossible to play around in the Wild format.
Alarm-o-Bot is pretty much the same exact deal. Very weak and high-rolly, and creates an awkward minion to pull from a random effect. Either it ends up being completely useless and you could've gotten anything else instead, or it high-rolls a game for you by cheating out your biggest threat. As a card to put into your deck, it just creates meme decks that fail at even being meme decks. Bone Drake will rotate into the Classic set to replace it as Dragons are a theme of our year and will improve the Dragon synergy of the sets. Speaking of Dragons though...
Nozdormu is the final card to rotate to the Hall of Fame. It's another weak card, but it makes for some interesting moments when summoned by a random effect. Unfortunately, it's existence also produces a number of bugs that force players to skip their turns and catches unattentive and new players (the main buyer of the Classic set) off-guard. Not to worry though, because Murozond will be making an appearance in the Caverns of Time set. Nozdormu will be replaced by Chillmaw because of her Dragon synergy as well as being a high skill cap card for both the player and the opponent.
Of course, a friendly reminder that cards aren't only rotated out because of power-level reasons, look at Ice Lanceor Coldlight Oracle for instance. Similarly, Master of Disguise was nerfed even though it wasn't playable anywhere, but the nerf was necessary to open up design space. Fun fact: Animated Armor was intended to be a Neutral card, but was moved to Mage (literally the worst possible class for the card) because of pre-nerf Master of Disguise .
Expansion 1: Once Upon a Time in Azeroth
Harkening back to the days of fairy-tales and legends, Once Upon a Time in Azeroth brings these stories to life in the world of Hearthstone. Dragons, fair and mighty princesses, ancient powerful deities and talking animals await with their untold stories that will widely affect the game.
Sample cards
Legacy is the main new keyword introduced in this expansion. Legacy effects trigger when you play a certain amount of cards. Think Sherazin, Corpse Flower or Dragon Soul. Some Legacy effects are more generic and trigger off of every card you play, whereas other Legacy effects will only work with specific types of cards (such as Spell Legacy which triggers off of playing a certain amount of spells). Legacy effects can trigger multiple times per turn.
The Elusive mechanic found on cards like Faerie Dragon is also now given its own keyword, although this is touched more upon in the next set. Of of this set, cards with these mechanics from previous sets will be retroactively changed to have the keywords. Examples:
Here is a list of cards that will be retroactively changed to have the Legacy and Elusive keywords:
The journey to fix the timestream has begun! Chromie and our adventurer are thrusted into the past of Azeroth in order to fix it. (Nozdormu from the Hall of Fame neither confirm nor denied any rumor of his involvement.) Before their departure, Nozdormu warned Chromie and the adventurer about the Story that he heard about the past that she must make ensure happened in order for the timeline to be stable.
Stories are powerful Legendary spells. All of them have powerful Start of Game effects as well as a separate, weaker effect when played. Each class will have a Story that will tied to the theme of their set. They are heavily build-around cards that demand a specific playstyle or cards to be effective. As per tradition of the recent expansions, each player will receive a random Story when you first log in:

Warlock
However, Murozond will not make their quest easy. He made a pact with the evil witch Baba Yaga in order to stop them from restoring history for a mutual purpose: to stop history from restored, and that means saving Baba Yaga and her evil followers from being put on trial and executed for their crime all the while give Murozond complete control over the timeline.

Druid
Unaware of the nasty witch, Chromie and our adventurer encounter a Druid named Demeter crying. In the original timeline, she is happy and openminded that her Druid daughter Persepholes married a Warlock and become more in tune with the spirit world of Wisp and together the two took part in the witch trial as witnesses. However, in this timeline, Baba Yaga sow her with doubt and fear, causing Demeter to break down and wiped out a big portion of nature. It took a long time for Chromie and adventurer to comfort her and give her hope for her daughter's future.
Continue their journey, Chromie and the adventurer came across a snowy area in the middle of summer! In that snowy kingdom they found a dwarf beaten half to dead. After healing her back to stable condition. they learn that her name is Snow White, the famous princess of the kingdom that came back to life after eating a poisoned apple, and was on her journey to defeat the evil Death Knight called The Snow Queen who cursed her kingdom with an eternal winter. In the original timeline, she fought bravely with her army and restored summer back to her kingdom. However, Baba Yaga interfered by attacking and wiped out her army before she can make it to The Snow Queen's castle. Chromie and the adventurer accompany her to the castle. The three of them fought an exhausted battle and they managed to defeat the Snow Queen. However, as they were taking a moment to celebrate their victory, The Snow Queen used her dying breath to shoot out a frost blast toward Chromie! Snow White pushed her out of they way and was frozen solid! However, the tears shred from Chromie and the adventurer was enough to nullify the Snow Queen's magic and bring her back to life.

Departing Snow White, Chromie and the adventurer came across one of the earliest human kingdom called Camelot. However, what they come into the castle gate, what they see is absolutely horrifying: Instead of the buzzling city, ruled by a fair and just king Arthur who was the leader of the Baba Yaga's witch trial, they found a bunch of children roaming the street crying and destroying everything in the kingdom! Baba Yaga has borrowed Murozond's power and turned everyone in Camelot into children! It took Chromie and our adventurer one day to find the leader of the city king Arthur and Archmage Merlin, a week to find out a way to turn them back to normal and a whole month for everyone in Camelot to follow suit.
After cleaning out the last of the vomit from the Camelot adult-turned-children, Chromie and the adventurer was caught off guard by Baba Yaga and her army. The two was whisked away the power Baba Yaga borrowed from Murozond and were dropped right into a middle of a big flood caused by the collapsed of Kalimdor with the intend to kill them. Chromie turned into her dragon form and carried the adventurers for days without food because the flood combined with the mana from the Sunwell drown out every single living creatures. Just as she is about to collapse, a giant ark steered by their direction and caught her fall. After nursing both back to full health, the owner of the ark introduced himself: His name is Noah, and his gift of prophecy has allowed him to become one of the deadliest Hunter ever lived because he can see every future move of his hunt, led to his escape from Kalimdor right before it drown (after building the ark to store Kalimdor's wildlife). His vision is what led him to the location of Chromie and the adventurer.

Shaman
Just as Noah finished explaining, a giant hand shot through the roof of his ark and grab both Chromie and the adventurer! It turned out to be Earthmother Azeroth herself! The shattering of Kalimdor led to a flood that nearly killed almost all her children has almost led to her awakening in the original timeline, but the presence of three people from a different time is the final straw that caused her to awaken to protect her children! After hours of plead and explanation from Chromie and the adventurer as well as Noah vouching for them, Azeroth let the two of them go with the promise that they never return to this time period again.
Story tokens:
Warrior
After being released by Azeroth, Chromie sense a disturbance from a far corner of Azeroth. After opening a portal there, they discover the reason why: One of the disciples of Baba Yaga is wielding the Mjolnir - the weapon that was used to struck them down during the Witch Trial! Seeing that the original wielder of the weapon Thorem is knocked unconscious and the rest of the Titans is busy fighting off Baba Yaga's Witches and the Infinite Dragonflight. The adventurer distract Baba Yaga's disciple while Chromie sneak behind and struck her unconscious, regain control of the Mjolnir and throw the hammer to Thorem, who joined the fight with the other Titans.
However, not all is rosy in their quest to return the timeline. One of the worst acts the duo has to do is ensuring the kingdom Arabia's - a place with untold riches and gold, total annihilation since it is brought up as key evidence against the Witches in the witch trial. This time around, Baba Yaga and her disciples have decided to corrupt the kingdom from the inside out and turned people under their thrall. After rescuing everyone from Baba Yaga's thrall, the witches fled the city and set up a bomb to blow it up. However, just as the adventurer is about to disarm the bomb, Chromie teleport them out of the way so the bomb can go off and ensure the kingdom's total annihilation so the timeline doesn't get interfered with.
Story tokens:
Priest
After a huge argument between the adventurer and Chromie about her action (in which the adventurer call her heartless while Chromie insists that their duty is to protect the timeline, not to save lives), the adventurer angrily storms off to a corner. When Chromie is about to go their corner and apologize, it turned out that the adventurer's doubt has allowed Baba Yaga to take a hold of them and caused them to attack Chromie. Chromie, not wanting to hurt her only ally, run away. After the adventurer chased her portals after portals, she finally came across an idea to help them snap out of it. She opened the portal to Snow White kingdom! After a battle by the Princess, she finally made a last ditch attempt to reach out to the adventurer: She pulled out a half-bitten apple from her pocket and told a shocking revelation: Shortly after awaken from the curse inflicted upon her, Snow White willingly tried to bite the rest of the apple herself!
After executing her evil stepmother, Snow White thought that she is no better than her stepmother for killing and that she doesn't deserve love from her people and fiance, and chose to endure the curse her stepmother planned for her. But her fiance stopped her, threw the apple to the ground and told her that he loves her, and that will never change. Snow White said that she knows it is hard to move on from do the right thing, but all we can do is to live with the consequences. This brought the adventurer out of thrall of Baba Yaga and broke down crying.
After the talk from Snow White, the adventurer and Chromie bid her goodbye to continue their journey. They helped many people from Baba Yaga's disciples and ensure that the witch trial went off according to plan, annihilate the evil witch and her forces forever. This caused the timeline to right itself and severely weaken the Infinite Dragonflight.
When does A Marriage of Life and Death put the blessings on top of your deck?
As with other Start of Game effects (Genn Greymane, Baku the Mooneater, and Prince Malchezaar), the effects trigger AFTER the mulligan, so the Blessings are placed on the top of your deck after your mulligan.
How do Legacy effects active on spells with Legacy?
Since in Hearthstone, spells play their effect first before actually casting them, Legacy will count the spell as an activation if it fits the requirement. Therefore, Voyage of Sinbad and Wrath of Zeus will count themselves for their own Legacy effect (for the first activation).
If you control Fandral and play Persepholes, both effect will be casted on your opponent's turn simultaneously. Also, it should be mentioned that Persepholes's effect function like other Choose One cards - if the timer runs out on your opponent's turn, one Choose One option will be randomly chosen.
How does the "go dormant" mechanic of Priest work?
It works similar to how The Darkness works. The minion is revived based on its base stats (meaning that any buff will be silenced) and it does not counted as killing a minion (so Deathrattle or effects like Cult Master can't be activated)
How does Echidna, Mother of Monsters or Nightmare Amalgam interact with the Shaman story?
When they die, the Story will randomly tick off a progress tribe.
How can you keep track of the Hunter and Shaman Stories?
You can check which tribe/Beasts that has been progressed by hovering over the Azeroth, Sleeping and The Great Ark token, like how you can check which minion that The Caverns Below has the most progress on.
Expansion 2: Nightmare on the Nether
Nightmare on the Nether takes us to the Emerald Nightmare and the Twisting Nether - an ethereal dimension of chaotic magics that connects the myriad worlds of the universe, where corruption overcomes the best of everyone and darkness lurks around every corner. No one is truly safe, even the dragonflights. Dangerous creatures like Demons, Ethereals, Voidwalkers and Nether Dragons await.
Sample cards
After a journey through fairy-tales and Azeroth history, Chromie and the player arrive back at present day Azeroth. Things are not all pretty as it seems, as the two notice the sky cracking. An idea stems from the Infinite Dragonflight to unite with the Dragons of Nightmare, using the powers of both forces and combine their nightmare powers with their time powers to spread across the world. Murozond opens a rift to travel to the Emerald Nightmare to negotiate with the Dragons of Nightmare. Chromie receives a distress call from Ysera to head to the Emerald Dream immediately, noting that the crack is traveling over the sky and the Emerald Nightmare is coming. Upon arrival though, things are worse than they'd have hoped: The rift created from the Emerald Dream has opened an invasion from the Twisting Nether! Worse, the sheer dark energy proves too much for Ysera, thus leading to the Aspect of Dream's corruption! Chromie and the adventurer barely fled with their life and have to turn to unlikely allies to close the Rift while battling horrendous monstrosities old and new born from the collision of the two planes.
The full set and storylines:
(now in alphabetical order by class)
Druid
With intimate connection with the Emerald Dream, Druids were enlisted to help Chromie and the adventurer. But beware who to trust because when corrupted, Druid has unlimited access to the Emerald Nightmare and the power of the Old Gods that corrupted it.
Tokens:
Druid of the Emerald
Eternal Dream
Nightmare Cenarius
Hunter
Being one of the only people that can understand and master the power of the Void, Alleria will accompany Chromie and the adventurer on their quest to stop the two worlds from colliding. With her bow and a few Void tricks of her sleeves, Alleria never miss her mark or fails her allies.
Mage
Pushing to the brink of survival and emotional limit, Jaina decided to abandon the last of her peaceful ideal and take up arm with the Nether Dragonflight infused with the power of the Nether to defend her people.
Wild card: Ring of the Kirin Tor
Paladin
With even Tirion Fordring falling into corruption of the Old Gods, all seems hopeless. However, the corruption fails to consume him. Instead, the power of the light inside of him finds a balanced co-existence with the corruption, and Tirion finds himself able to wield both the light and the void.
Priest
Cut off from the light, Priest turned to unconventional sources for power to survive: From the untrustworthy and self-serving Ethereals, the power of the Void itself, to the corrupted heart of the Old God servant Il'gynoth. The true question is: Are they in control of these powers? Or are these powers in control of them?
Wild card: Shadow Strength
Rogue
Seeing opportunity for collecting multiple artifacts, the Ethereals slide between battles to lend a hand. While certainly helpful, Chromie and the adventurer know better to trust these creatures since their only true alliance is themselves.
Shaman
Hakkar is all too familiar with the Emerald Nightmare having been an alleged source for Eranikus's corruption. He has returned once again and given his followers special powers.
Tokens:
Warlock
With the Twisting Nether and the Emerald Nightmare connecting together, Xavius marches into the Nether and commands an army of the void to fight alongside his side, also finding new energy to consume and grow stronger in the process.
Warrior
Eranikus, Dream Tyrant, former Consort of Ysera now served with her in the Emerald Nightmare and bring upon with him some followers with trick of their own.
Neutral
With Ysera falling into the nightmare's complete control, Chromie and the adventurer must either kill Ysera or find a way to shape her back to her usual self. Unfortunately, the nether dragons, demons, and other inhabitants of both lands don't make things any easier for the two.
Wild card: Shivarra Blademaster
Tokens:
Ethereal Trader
After you play Ethereal Trader, your opponent is offered this choice at the start of their next turn.
Ysera of the Nightmare
FAQ
How does Ethereal Trader work?
Ethereal Trader will give a choice of 3 cards (like Discover or Curious Glimmerroot) from your hand, then from your opponent's hand. At the start of your opponent's next turn, they will see the "Take It" and "Leave It" options as well as the cards you chose and will decide whether or not to swap the cards. Basically two Discover interfaces and a Choose One effect, so it's really not as complicated as it might seem on first glance.
What happens to minions that reaches 0 Health from Alleria of the Void?
Minions that reach 0 Health from Alleria of the Void will stay in their owner's hands and/or decks, but will immediately die upon entering the battlefield. 0 Health minions will still activate their Battlecries and can still be used to trigger effects like Knife Juggler.
No, minions taken by Heart of Il'gynoth do not gain Charge, thus they cannot attack unless they have Charge themselves (and technically Rush too although your opponent will typically have an empty board when you play this). An important distinction is that Shadow Madness gives control of the minion back at the end of that turn, whereas Heart of Il'gynoth gives control of the minions back at the start of your next turn. Because of this, you actually never get to attack with the minions you take control of (and it would be insanely overpowered if you could). The two mechanics fill different utilities.
Expansion 3: Caverns of Time
The Caverns of Time are a zone where time magic is most prominent, where the Bronze Dragonflight and other time wielders are located. It's this set where all 9 classes get cards to harness the power of time and cards with new, interesting mechanics.
Sample cards
After an exhausted battle to fix the broken timeline, Chromie and the adventurer finally gather enough strength to return to the place that started it all: The Cavern of Time where the Bronze Dragonflight finally managed to track down the Infinite Dragonflight and engage in a battle to annihilate them once and for all.
Turns Active is a brand new mechanic found on the Shrine cards. Cards with this mechanic stay active on the battlefield for a set amount of turns and comes with a passive effect. The card is removed when the last turn is up.
"Echo" cards:
Murozond with his immense power created powerful echoes of our beloved adventurers that brought out the worst aspect of themselves to battle. Will they prevail? Or be crushed under the weight of their past?
"Echo" cards are a cycle of cards found in this expansion that grant effects based on the last action of a certain type you performed. In this case, Echo of Tyrande triggers off of how much Health you last healed.
"Future" cards:
The plans that Nozdormu has been prepared during Chromie's adventure in the past and the future has been revealed! With these powerful spells, he will strike Murozond and his force with magic that they can't anticipate.
The "Future" cards are another cycle of cards. You play it now, then they have an effect on your next turn. In the case of Future Strike, you pay 1 mana for no effect, but you gain a 3/2 Wolf with Rush on your next turn, all for only 1 mana.
Shrine cards:
With thousand of years of keeping the peace in Azeroth, shrines have been popping up to not only worship the Bronze Dragonflight, but to also celebrate the history that they preserved. Now in the time of need, Nozdormu transfer the power of these Shrines to himself to preserve the timeline.
Shrine cards are a new type of card introduced in this expansion, in the form of collectable dormant cards placed onto the battlefield directly. They last a set amount of turns and have a passive effect whilst active. After X turns are up, the Shrine is destroyed. Note that it only counts YOUR turns, and the turn you play will count as the first turn. Shrine cards also do not count as minions. As such, they cannot be generated through cards like Evolve or Astral Rift, and are unaffected by cards like Twisting Nether.
The full set and storylines:
Druid
Seeing the timeline threatened of being shattered, Druid begins to work with the Bronze Dragonflight by lending the help of their magic and understanding of life in order to give the Dragonflight an edge over the death-magic user of the Infinite Dragonflight.
Tokens:
(Choose One options for Moro Wildmesa)
Hunter
Seeing the echo of her sister and the hero of her people Sylvanas's image being used for nefarious purpose, Vereesa Windrunner pledge her people's service as well as the Shrine dedicated to her sister Alleria's past heroism to Nozdormu.
Tokens:
(created by Future Strike)
Mage
With every lives in Azeroth is at steak, Alexstrasza can't stand aside, especially when she heard the rumor that Murozond has allied himself with the Naga Queen Azshara. Alexstrasza might be Aspect of Life, but she also the wisest and strongest of the Dragons and one of the most respected and beloved force in Azeroth. Her very presence in the battlefield will make all creatures tremble with fear as her enemies or with awe as her allies.
Paladin
When the Bronze Dragonflight's morale was their lowest point due to a crisis that the Bronze Dragonflight are themselves their own future versions, Nozdormu's consort Soridormi snaps them out with her wise words that they of all Dragons should know that the future is not set in stone and is influenced by the choice they make in the present. This allows the Bronze Dragonflight to unite at one for the good of the timeline.
Priest
The Infinite Dragonflight's power has allowed them to enslave the abomination Chromatus to their service. With all the power of the five Dragonflights, he will be a dangerous foe for Nozdormu.
Rogue
Murozond, with his immense power and cunning, traveled back in time to show Edwin VanCleef his grim future of being defeated and his daughter murdered by his enemy the Stormwind nobles. Making a deal with Murozond to fight for his force, Edwin pledge his force and the tricks up his sleeves to Murozond to keep the timeline shattered.
Wild card: Timewalker Assassin
Tokens:
(created by Edwin, Defias Kingpin)
Note: Playing Edwin will give you the Hero Power even if the Start of Game effect does not activate. You must activate the Start of Game effect to gain the Defias Dagger though.
Shaman
When the entire timeline is at steak, even the normally neutral and indifferent Elementals can't stand aside. All of them and the Shaman of Azeroth pledge their service to the Bronze Dragonflight for survival.
Wild card: Ocean Shrine
Hagara's effect:
Hagara's effect works much like Deathstalker Rexxar's Zombeast by combining 2 spells. Also like Rexxar, it cannot Discover spells that cost more than 5 to prevent unplayable spells. Unlike Rexxar though, the entire library of Shaman spells are available in both Discover options.
This is a general template of how the spells will look after Discovered:
The artwork uses the artwork of the first spell. X represents the combined cost of the two spells. Y represents the combined Overload of the two spells. This is simply a reminder of how much total overload is applied to the card, but the card will also be considered an Overload card for the purposes of Unbound Elemental or Ocean Shrine. All spells created by Hagara all called "Combined Spell".
If none of the spells have Overload, the "Combined Overload" statistic simply won't come up as opposed to saying "Combined Overload: (0)". Example (Earthen Might + Far Sight):
Warlock
Infinite Chronormu, better known as Anti-Chromie, one of Murozond's greatest and most ruthless followers has arrived to give Chromie a worthy opponent, bringing with her the Timeline Suppressor that will ensure Murozond's victory.
Warrior
The Bronze Dragonflight traitor Kairozdormu has returned from the death due to Murozond's power, he brings with himself a charismatic presence that charm a number of deceived allies and the Bronze Dragonflight's enemy to the force of Murozond.
Neutral
With the fight between the two Dragonflights came to a conclusion, both sides held nothing back against one another. Nozdormu and Murozond made a grand entrance with both of their loyal followers and magic. Will the timeline prevail? Or will it be forever shattered?
Wild card: Nozdormu, Lord of Time
Tokens:
The condition varies based on your opponent's class:
The version on the left is created if your opponent is a Druid, Paladin, or Warrior.
The version on the middle is created if your opponent is a Hunter, Shaman, or Warlock.
The version on the right is created if your opponent is a Mage, Priest, or Rogue.
FAQ
How does Echo of Tyrande interact with AoE healing, like Circle of Healing?
It would simply just deal 4 damage instead of the total amount healed, because all of the healing is technically separate. If you notice when you cast Spirit Lash, it will say +1 over your hero no matter how much Health you healed for. Same logic here.
How does Chromie interact with the "Future" cards?
Chronormu does activate Start of turn effects if she is summoned at that turn after the effect. For example: She will activate the Future effects again even if she is summoned after the effects go off.
These are some amazingly awful picks for hall of fame 0/10 #nozdormuforlife #freealarmobot
edit: also echo of tyrande just wins you the game with Reno
In the Reno + Echo of Tyrande you mentioned, the opponent just can play around it if they have any source of burst damage. Not to mention the combo cost 11 mana.

FAQ
How does Persepholes interact with Fandral Staghelm?

Do minions taken by Heart of Il'gynoth have Charge, like Shadow Madness and Potion of Madness?
Tokens:

An example of how it would look like (Lightning Storm + Healing Rain)
