I'm fairly new, but does anyone else feel the way lifesteal plays out is bullshit? Just from a basic logic standpoint? If a character with lifesteal has +5 attack and kill a minion with +1 health, how do they possibly get a +5 health bonus? Where does that +4 even come from? As far as I can tell no other ability has such a fundamentally skewed flaw.
Lifesteal works from the attack. It does 5 damage, it heals 5 Health. Hearthstone minions can go to negative health (so in that case -4 health), therefore the lifesteal minion does do that much damage.
that is because lifesteal minions are stated weaker and are not on 'curve' and just check standard. Not a lot (if not any) lifesteal minions are played. So if you made it that they would only steal the remaining amount of health left on a minion, it would be really bad.
I'm not a designer but I think that's why they went with it.
Also I think you are just salty of losing a game to that in the brawl, cuz clearly if you are the one gaining the HP as well you wouldn't complain ;)
Simple answer hearthstone has overkill, both against players and minions. for instance Bolf Ramshield completely counters C'Thun because he takes overkill damage before dying after the effect ends, thus overkill from life steal heals for full.

I'm more annoyed by the lack of good Lifesteal minions
1) definitely salty haha, this has happened to me a ton when I playing against a mage who plays Frost Linch Jania; 2) the logic still just seems shit. There's only 1 health to steal from a one health minion. I guess at a minimum don't call it Lifesteal.
Well it just comes down to if you think Lifesteal should heal based on damage dealt or damage received. Right now it's based on dealt (I.e. a 5 attack lifesteal minion heals 5), while you want it to be received (I.e. a 1 health minion takes 5 damage from a minion with lifesteal, therefore healing for 1). Both options can make sense, it's not really a fundamental flaw, it just comes down to how you think the interaction is supposed to work.
Given that overkilling is a thing in the game (I.e. if you damage a 1 health minion for 6 damage, it's health shows -5 instead of 0 before it dies) making Lifesteal based off damage dealt kinda makes sense. So if you wanted to change how Lifesteal works you'd probly have to remove overkilling as well.
Yes yes, and Fire Elementals can be Frozen, Divine Shields can nullify ANY damage, Deathwing can be poisoned to death by a snail, Mechs can be swayed by a Potion of Madness, the list goes on...
It's a card game based on a fantasy world, suck it up and stop acting like some pseudo-intellectual.
I don't think applying basic math qualifies as being a pseduo-intellectual. Every example listed previously listed doesn't apply. Overkill is simply overkill. You had more damage than necessary. But if you're stealing health, that require health to be stolen. Where is that stolen health coming from? Really hope I don't have to break this down any more.
I do personally feel the same way. Lifesteal in every other game I have played does not work the way it does in Hearthstone. Plus it bothers me as the name itself is misleading. You are stealing life from an enemy, you shouldn't be able to steal more life than the enemy possesses.

You can think of it as simply eating the corpse of the victim: corpse is obviously at 0 hp, but you can keep feeding on it.
If you want to take a real world example (which is not that helpful as this is . fantasy game buuut) if you was to kill someone, you can still deal ''extra damage" to them. They might be dead but you can steal deal damage. And going a tad into fantasy, a vampire can kill someone but then go to suck all their blood after
I understand it's weird as we don't have 'over healing' but hey oh...that's the game
Congrats! You found something to complain about that I have never seen someone complain about before! Fun fact, it works this way in most CCG's like Magic's spirit link mechanic.
I will willingly admit I created this account and started this thread over being extremely salty. But I started playing this game because it seemed to be very strategic and logic based and this is the first instance I've encountered that I just can't justify. Take that for what you will.

In that case I would point you to the Salty thread. I don't deny your right to complain, just that there is a place for it.
On topic however, I don't find it odd at all. As minions can get reduced to negative life totals it makes perfect sense to me. This isn't a matter of logic, it's a matter of perspective.

Be glad you don't play Eternal where the initial hero HP can be exceeded by lifesteal and healing (or be upset this game doesn't work that way).
Free to try and find a game, dealing cards for sorrow, cards for pain.

I can understand why are you thinking that way, as you said you are fairly new. Most of more expirienced players just accept the fact as it is.
If that bothers you, think of it that way: your minion/weapon/spell deals 3 damage, therefore you are healed for 3.
And they always talk about how they're trying to make the game feel intuitive for new players...
Im guessing you play face hunter
That's Incredible!

Never thought about this but if you hit Animated Armor with any lifesteal that has more than 1 attack, it will heal for only 1 yes?
Edit: I mean of hitting the hero
Me? Gongaga.
