When making a custom class, the Basic Set is arguably the hardest set to get right. We all want to get to our flashy cards as soon as possible, but the Basic Set is the most important set. It defines the groundwork for the class. The quality of your Basic Set will greatly impact the rest of your class. The other hard part about it is that they can't be very obscure, because they're intended to be... Basic. They're cards that are intended to be very simple, yet very essential for the class. With the current Class Competition (Trial and Errors) about to start Phase II, now is the best time to get this out there.
Every class should have access to at least one non-friendly AoE with Shaman being the odd one out, presumably because they have Lightning Storm in the Classic set.
Druid this time here is the exception to all of the other classes. We can assume this is because removal is supposed to be a weakness for Druid and they make up in other aspects.
Once you get past that, you can also add cards that specifically fit your class's themes. For example:
A class's Basic set usually only has 1 or 2 minions.
The class with the most is Hunter with 4. If you have more than 4 minions in your Basic set, you should cut a few of them. Meanwhile, Rogue is at the opposite end of the spectrum with 0. For reference, here is the number of minions in each class's Basic set:
This doesn't mean you should try to make every card like this, but it's nice to have should it happen. Some classes (Shaman and Druid) in particular may not follow some of these categories, in part because they have easy to access cards in the Classic set (Mana Tide Totem, Lightning Storm) or are intended to be weak in a particular aspect. You could possibly justify skipping one of these should that come up.
Journey to Un'Goro: Elementals with last turn synergy (Mage is an elemental class; e.g. Steam Surger), Beasts with Adapt (Druid is a Dino class; e.g. Verdant Longneck), or other (e.g. Plants like Rogue or a combination of Elementals and Beasts like Warlock)
The Boomsday Project: Scientific Field with respective head scientist as Legendary (e.g. Mage's Astronomy Head Scientist Stargazer Luna)
Rastakhan's Rumble: Loa/Animal Spirit (e.g. Shaman's Loa Krag'wa, the Frog)
A good thing for potential class creators to read, considering some of these details might come up on the test *hint hint*

Behold, foolish interlopers! I am commanding this mortal to spread the will of the Scourge throughout the interwebs, encouraging you to seek out me, Archlich Kel'Thuzad! Now coming to you as the tenth class of Hearthstone!
I am a finalist in this Class Creation Competition, so if you could give it a look I would be greatly appreciative <3
I was having problems making the Classic set for my Alchemist class, so I made a compilation of every theme of all classes in the Classic + Basic set. Yes, I have a lot of free time right now xD

Slightly off topic question, do you know of a resource like this for the other expansions as well? I want to design a complete class and I think something showing what each expansion entails for each class would be very useful!

Each class's Basic set should include:
Single Target Damage:
AoE:
Every class should have access to at least one non-friendly AoE with Shaman being the odd one out, presumably because they have Lightning Storm in the Classic set.
Card Draw:
Shaman once again is the odd man out here. We can assume this is because Mana Tide Totem is a thing.
Removal/Neutralization:
Druid this time here is the exception to all of the other classes. We can assume this is because removal is supposed to be a weakness for Druid and they make up in other aspects.

Top tip: It's also a really good idea for cards to follow more than 1 aspect, increasing utility and space. For example:
This doesn't mean you should try to make every card like this, but it's nice to have should it happen. Since this is for the class comp, I'm gonna add this stuff as well so we can group the things.

Thanks for this, Demon and Cogito.
Great post. Thank you.
Thank you Demon!
wonderful post.
Rejoice, for even in death, you have become children of Thanos.
