Hello. I want to tell you a story of how I went to Legend. Maybe it will be useful for someone who want to know how hard it is.
I’m a casual player. The highest rank I ever reached before was Rank 11, 4 stars, in Standard. The most fun of Hearthstone for me is to build custom decks.
I like Tavern Brawls with custom rules, especially where you need to build a custom deck. Some Brawls are great, others are not. It’s not possible to make all Brawls equally good. Usually, I’m waiting for Brawls and sometimes even make more than 30 wins in this. Just look at how casual I’m.
The last two expansions (The Boomsday Project and Rastakhan’s Rumble) was a little bit disappointing for me, so I decided to try Wild mode. Wild is like opening to yourself a new expansion, with a lot of great and fun cards. So I started playing Wild.
In December, I crafted aggro Shaman (600 dust) and went from Rank 25, 0 stars to Rank 20, 1 star and lost interest. On 1st January a new season started. I wanted to play Wild more and crafted Even Shaman, that cost me around 2000 dust. That’s a nice deck. Later I switched it to Big Priest and went to Legend. Let’s see how it was.
I played five games on my mobile phone to get a card back. All five was wins. I went from Rank 20, 0 stars to Rank 19, 3 stars.
2nd of January. 0 games.
I didn’t played Hearthstone at all. I had more urgent duties.
3rd of January. 5 games, W:2 L:3, 40% WR.
At this point, I decided to go to the Legend in this season. I didn’t knew how hard it is but decided to try. I thought to play 20 games in a day on my mobile phone with this Even Shaman. 20 games is a little bit more than 2 hours of playing. This day I ended at Rank 19.
4th of January. 24 games, W:18 L:6, 75% WR.
I started to grid. Try harded a lot and ended at Rank 15, 1 star, right after check point.
5th of January. 21 games, W:16 L:5, 76% WR.
I continued to grind. I went from Rank 15 to Rank 11, 2 stars. Still, it was not possible to take the next check point, so I decided to leave it for the other day. Interestingly enough, as hsreplay shows, due to win streaks, I played just 2 games at Rank 13.
6th of January. 36 games, W: 18 L:18, 50% WR.
What a tough day :-( Lots of games played. Due to win streaks I managed to reach Rank 10, 1 star. Yup, even with 50% WR your are leveling up.
It looks like around Rank 12, Rank 11, there are a lot of good players with good decks, who just don’t have time to grind. So they are stuck in these ranks. It was really-really hard to grind. I decided to stop rushing so much and play 20 games in a day as was initially planned.
7th of January. 19 games, W: 14 L: 5, 73% WR.
It becomes much easy to grind after the check point. I ended this day at Rank 6.
8th of January. 10 games with Even Shaman, W: 5 L: 5 50% WR.
The deck slows down. I got Rank 6, 1 star and started loosing. I ended this grind at Rank 7, 5 stars and decided to switch the deck. I crafted Big Priest that cost me around 4000 dust.
8th of January. 4 games with Big Priest, W: 4 L: 0 100% WR.
The decision to craft Big Priest was right. The first game was on my mobile phone, like all games with Even Shaman. However, the first game (against Big Spell Mage) shown that it’s really hard to pilot this deck from mobile phone. It’s not an aggro deck. I switched to my main PC, enabled Deck Tracker and continued to grind.
I won 4 games in row and went to Rank 5, 2 stars. I started grind on 4th of January and at the evening of 9th of January I was on Rank 5. That’s where the real game begins.
9th of January. 10 games, W: 6 L: 4, 60% WR.
I decided to play 10 games in a day because it’s not possible to play 20 games with this slow deck in two hours. It’s even hard to play 10 games in two hours and I decided to split game sessions into two parts: one at morning with 6 games and one at evening with remaining 4 games.
I ended this day at Rank 5, still learning the deck. It’s just looking as brain-dead, just play Barnes and win, but actually it’s not.
10th of January. 15 games, W: 8 L: 7, 53% WR.
At this day, I meet Murlock Paladin with Anyfin Can Happen for the first time. Wild is awesome! I played two games with the same opponent, one lost (I did’t knew who I’m playing against), one win (I knew).
At Rank 5, you can find pretty interesting decks, as I played two times with Quest Warlock (both won).
11th of January. 10 games, W: 8 L: 2, 80% WR.
At this day, I bought a Premium subscription to hsreplay. Now it shows me real win rates of my deck on the R5-Legend bracket and it’s disappointing me. It shows just 54% win rate. It’s hardly countered by Rogues. Well, at least hsreplay now shows mulligan statistics on the R5-Legend bracket. It was useful but now that much.
Also, I found that hsreplay shows win rates of cards that allows Discover something. It was pretty handy information. And I found dependency of win rates and the turn when cards are played. It was very important information.
It seems I get used to this deck. Somehow I managed to win so much and get Rank 3, 1 star.
At this day, I lost to OTK DK Paladin. I knew that architype but I didn’t knew that you can play the combo with Bananas from Banana Buffoon. I lost but found something new and entertaining. It was joyful lost. I even clicked in time the Well Played emote.
12th of January. 13 games, W: 6 L: 7, 46% WR.
That’s where things became complicated. I lost stars and ended the day at Rank 4, 5 stars. At this time, I was played Hearthstone a lot. I tired of it. I lost any motivation. “How long this can go on?!”
I’m at Rank 3 and it became so slow to grind. The deck is slow and can be punishing. You can play 20 minutes and lose to your own misplay :-( Every defeat is very punishing without win streaks. All slow, all boring.
I played against tempo Mage with a lot of secrets. I lost due to my own misplay. It was unfavoured game for me and, well, when I saw Mage, I thew the game. I decided that I could not win this… but somehow I was in position where I really could win the unfavourable game. Still, I misplayed at the end and lost. Yes, it was all my fault. This lose was really punishing.
I opened the replay on hsreplay and analyzed every move, every card drawn. Yes, I could win. Still, the opponent was unfavoured and could just top-deck burst damage and kill me… This game teached me a lot. Now I know the essense of Hearthstone — you should win games you should not win! There’s no such thing as auto-lose. Even 40% WR is not auto-lose. It’s very important to not throw games, even if everything looks really bad you can still win out of nowhere. I analyzed this game against the Mage a lot and this made me stronger.
At this day, I lost three games in a row. It was the only time when it happened. Yes, I used to lose two games in a row but just two. At this day, it was three, two of which I lost to the same opponent, with the same deck, against which I was favoured :-(
13th of January. 1 game W: 1 L: 0, 100% WR.
I’m playing Hearthstone for a little bit more than two hours in a day for the past 10 days or so. I sick and tired of Hearthstone. I never played Hearthstone so much before. And… it’s really not fun to grid. Really-really not fun!
I wanted to take a day off. It was Sunday, my favoured streamer started a stream. I thought “Nah… I don’t want to play”. Still, I won one game, get Rank 3 and closed the game.
14th of January. 10 games, W: 7 L: 3, 70% WR.
I rested a little bit but not enough. I was still sick of Hearthstone. I don’t wanted to play so much but somehow forced myself to grid. It was really not fun.
I started thinking about changing the deck. I tired of Big Priest. Hsreplay shows the win rate of this deck is decreasing to 53,7%. It was hardly counterable by Rogues. Also, hsreplay shows the past several days Rogue population increased and Big Priest games count decreased. So, more Rogues, less Priests.
I analyzed this information from hsreplay several times a day. Still, could not decide what is better: Rogue or Priest. Rogues hardly counterable by Even Shamans and there are a lot of Shamans, much more than Rogues. “Nah”, I though, “just do nothing”. And I kept playing the Big Priest.
The day ends at Rank 3, 5 stars.
15th of January. 10 games, W: 6 L: 4, 60% WR.
I had no will power at all. I don’t want to play this game. I don’t know why. I was very stressed. Every game is very painful. Each decision is painful. Each misplay is very punishing. 20 minute games becomes eternity.
I whinned a lot. A lot! “Why are you whining?!” I asked myself. Look, the last couple of days you have 60% more win rate. “It seems you get used to this deck and your win rate just increasing” I said to myself. But still I whinned. Every game goes under a ton of pressure. Every decision is very painful…
I ended this day on Rank 2, worn out.
16th of January. 10 games, W: 7 L: 3, 70% WR.
Going to Hearthstone like to a work. Somehow managed to go to Rank 1, 1 star. At the end of the day I felt relief.
I read a lot of stories on forums about players that could made up to Rank 3 or even Rank 2 and then fell again to Rank 5. Now I calmed down because I made it to Rank 1. I think players that can go from Rank 2 to Rank 5 are just aggro players. Aggro is inconsistent. I’m playing slow deck and I’m almost does not have lose streaks. I can lose two games in a row but that’s it. Statistics for the last couple of days shows that I’m not loosing that much to go to Rank 5. Yeah, I felt relief.
17th of January. 9 games, W: 7 L 2, 77% WR.
The first game of the day was a defeat to a Rogue. Rank 1 was full of aggro decks (Odd Rogue, Even Shaman, Odd Paladin, Pirate Rogue). Then, it was five wins in a row, one game of which was with the same Rogue I lost the first game. I’m at Rank 1, 5 stars. Just six games out of 10 played this day. I need to play four more games and the final boss is in front of me. But I have my real life duties. I sat in front of my monitor and thought “I could win and finish everything right here, right now, but I can lose and it will take some more time”. I decided to go to do my duties and finish the final boss at evening.
At evening, my final boss was Rank 2 Hunter with Barnes on Turn 4 and 10/10 Y'Shaarj, Rage Unbound. I got 26 damage in one turn and lost. Then I won Even Shaman and faced Top 459 Legend player on Dragon Control Priest. I won. Just won. That was my first Legend ;-)
Was it hard?
Yes, it was really hard, very stressful.
Do you want to get to Legend againt?
No. I got my card back — that’s enough. I’m not going for esports. Now I want to have fun with this game.
What ranks are the hardest?
I had a lot of trouble on Rank 5, there are a lot of diversity. But really hard Rank 3 and Rank 2 because your are playing under a lot of pressure. That’s where mentally hard to play. Rank 1 was much easier than Rank 2 because this pressure goes away. I don’t know why.
On high ranks, do you playing against Legend players?
Maybe someone is playing. I faced Legend player just once — he was my final boss.
Do Legend players concede to Rank 1 players gifting them their Legend?
Maybe. I saw this on various streams but no one conceded to me out of nowhere. All wins were pure wins.
On high ranks, do you playing against the same players?
I faced same opponents several times but not that much. I played 89 games between Rank 5 and Legend and faced the same opponent just four times (two games each).
How many games have you played?
I played 120 games with Even Shaman and 92 with Big Priest. It’s 212 games. I had 64% win rate with Shaman and 65% win rate with Priest.
How many hours have you played?
As hsreplay shows me, I played 682 minutes with Even Shaman and 705 minutes with Big Priest. It’s 1387 minutes or 23 hours. However! It’s just time playing. You should increase it for about 2 hours that was spent to finding games, resting after the game, waiting until my last opponent find himself a new game. Total time is about 25 hours.
I tried to play 2 hours a day. I started to grind on 4th of January, I was in Legend on 17th of January and one day I didn’t played. It’s 12 days or 24 hours of playing the game. So, I spent 24-25 hours to get to Legend from Rank 20, 0 stars.
What opponent was the hardest?
When I played Shaman — Big Priest, when I played Big Priest — Rogues. Still, I have positive win rate against everything (the first win was against Mage on my mobile phone and not shown in this statistics):
Did you played in Legend?
I played 4 games, 3 won and 1 lost. I lost any interest. As for me, playing in Legend was very relaxing. Not just for me but for my opponents as well. Looks like everyone does not care about winning or lossing.
Cancer decks, might as well downloaded pirate warrior script and leave it on autoplay
The guy wanted to try and hit Legend for the first time... How DARE he play Tier 1 decks. I'm sure the first time you hit Legend you did it with a janky home brew deck... That is, if you've even hit Legend ;)
Lol this is a troll thread. We get it dude Blizzard should do something about either Barnes or the ressurect spells. Same for Devolve which is not only holding even shaman together but the sole reason why wild even shaman is so much better than its standard version.
Having said that its relevant to say that those decks arent tier1 anymore their status changed during January but funny thing is that they still feel unskilled to play and are the ones that give the unfair feeling to whoever loses to them as opossed to other tier1 decks like odd warrior renolock and surprisingly odd rogue and mech hunter. Those are all considered fair decks despite odd warrior and rogue hero power being pretty op.
In conclusion i still think u are trolling but if not then congrats dude keep it up.
i will however emote the shit out of big priests and even shaman when im about to beat them cause i will beat them since the 4 decks that i usually run in wild all bully big priests and even shaman making them rethink their life choices with each defeat. Roping them each turn might depend if i have the time or not on that particular day.
Can't say I like the deck you piloted, but hitting legend is still a big accomplishment congrats! I also enjoyed the way you told it as a story and documented it all.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I don't have something witty about this deck, I just like it because Malygos is fun.
Congratulation, it was a nice read about grinding to Legend. I experienced the same last spring so I could relate to your post so much. I just grabbed my cardback with a homebrew wild aggro Paladin - not even or odd, although used Call to Arms since it was OP. The grind between rank 5 and legend was a real suffering. Never again. :)
If the grind is that stressful with decks that strong then you’re doing something wrong
I don't necessarily agree depending on which deck we're talking about. I also hit legend for the first time ever in the last week (first time ever above rank 5 tbh) and the thing that finally did it for me? I stopped playing Even Shaman, which kept me bouncing between rank 3 and 1 for the longest time, and instead went for a type of deck that kept hard countering me (Dragon Priest, in my case the Reno variant).
After I stopped playing Even Shaman, which instantly lost to any form of Dragon Priest, Odd Warrior, and struggled against Odd Rogue if I didn't get my Golaka Crawlers/Eels I massively boosted my success rate and had way fewer losses. You can have a powerful deck and know how to pilot it fairly well, but there are multiple hard counters to your deck then you are absolutely going to struggle if you don't happen to dodge them in the queue during your grind. I don't think it was coincidence that Reno Dragon Priest took me to Legend when Even Shaman did not. The deck's only hard counter between rank 5 to legend was Odd Warrior, with Big Priest being a hard match-up if they highroll you and/or you aren't familiar with the match-up (btw I took many Big Priests almost to fatigue a number of times during my grind), with Kingsbane Rogue only being slightly unfavored.
The deck with fewer bad match-ups will always net you better results than the deck with more bad match-ups (assuming you pilot both decks about equally).
BTW, gratz OP! Although I still dislike Big Priest ;P
GZ man, it takes a lot of dedication to hit legend for the first time. (It's not something I've attempted yet as I know just how many much time you need to put in, respect though man)
Congrats on first time legend, even though it hate the decks you used xD. That was basically my story 2 yrs ago but with aggro shaman so I can't say I did it with a clean deck either lmao... Have hit legend 4 times in total in my HS career. Normally just over the summer when school isn't a thing, beautiful times xD. Anyways, congrats.

The decision to craft Big Priest was right. The first game was on my mobile phone, like all games with Even Shaman.
What was the highest rank in Legend?
Top 318.
Unbowed. Unbent. Unbroken.
Nice write-up and congrats on hitting legend for the first time. It's going to be easier the second time around if you ever go for it again.
Cheers
Congratz! For me when I did my push for legend rank 1- legend was the hardest, mostly because I have gotten rank 1 3 times before that.
If the grind is that stressful with decks that strong then you’re doing something wrong
Can't say I like the deck you piloted, but hitting legend is still a big accomplishment congrats! I also enjoyed the way you told it as a story and documented it all.
CoolStoryBob, tell me more please.
I lol-ed hard. HS is not for people, who can't handle BMs and tilting. Go play FarmVille, I heard it's a very relaxing game.
Anyways, congrats.
nobody cares
Playing even shaman and big priest was very hard and stressful?
Yeah this is definitely a troll thread.
