Here's the list of cards that have attempted to replace belcher as a mid-game taunt:

Khartut Defender is doing it great

Safeguard is fine. Khartut is better, though

Rotten Applebaum did it well

Rusty Recycler was okay, in magnet decks

Trogg Gloomeater tried but wasn't popular

Bone Wraith is fine

Infested Tauren no idea why Blizz thought this would be good

Felsoul Inquisitor again, no idea how it could be even fine

Proud Defender 4-mana 4-6 taunt is good

Saronite Chain Gang 4-mana 2-6 taunt wasn't used so much for defence

Phantom Militia as a 6-mana 2-8 taunt isn't so good.

Rabble Bouncer opponent has 4 minions? It's a deathlord with no drawback! them having 3 makes this card vanilla/good

I never really understood, but what is Sludge Belcher even saying when he is played? Troggs still funny?

I always thought it was something feels funny, but apparently its tummy feel funny according to the wiki.
