The best swordsman in the world doesn't need to fear the second best swordsman in the world; no, the person for him to be afraid of is some ignorant antagonist who has never had a sword in his hand before; he doesn't do the thing he ought to do, and so the expert isn't prepared for him; he does the thing he ought not to do; and often it catches the expert out and ends him on the spot. Mark Twain , (1835 - 1910)
About a year ago, I was making an argument that my own unique deck creations did quite well on the ladder, even though they were not “meta”, and one of them was even based around Savagery, the “worst card ever”. And in response, someone said that I was - in essence - cheating because I was not playing what people expect to face.
Now, I am certainly not saying that someone who designs unique decks around “bad” cards is the same thing as the “idiot” in the quote above, but the effect is the same. In this world of excessive net decking, why not do something unexpected?
Have a unique deck design that you think is really fun and surprisingly effective? I think it would be cool to share some stories.
I want to upvote OP more. Creativity is all I crave, and the reason I play Hearthstone. I don't mind high quality lists, and I even "discovered" the Mysterious Challenger deck before it got really popular (but I did the approach wrong). But the reason I really play is to mess around with unique combos and cards that people don't expect.
This is a Hunter Combo deck that I've been messing around with on Ladder, visiting our old friend Starving Buzzard:
I run a “Nerubian Rogue” with a golden darkness, two beneath the grounds, nerubian eggs and ways to buff them ETC. most people can’t handle the RNG miracle of triple ambush draws (I don’t have that new one that shuffles spiders into my deck yet but I need it)
Here’s my old Savagery deck (since I mentioned it in the original post). It hasn’t been updated with any cards from the last couple of expansions, but some of the new stuff would probably be quite good in it.
I remember one game in particular where I killed a pirate warrior by hitting him in the face for 13 damage WITH MY HERO!! Being able to nuke a taunt minion for 1 mana and then hit the face makes me wonder why Savagery has been so...savaged...by the Hearthstone community over the years. Seems better than the new spellstone to me!
Since other 2017 decks are being posted here, here's the dragon druid list I used to reach legend early 2017... don't mind the title; it's a reference to a meta shadowverse deck at the time. I love Maly druids in general and refining my own list was probably one of the best experiences I had in the game
During KFT, with strong neutrals I found pretty good success with tempo and zoo decks (mostly with keleseth) in every class giving chance to use unappreciated class cards. My best performer however was non-keleseth tempo warrior, and the stars of the show were often Commanding Shout and Fool's Bane... Oh yeah, and bonemare
A few days ago I came up with the wacky idea of adding Anyfin Can Happen to an Aggro Murloc Paladin. I threw in 2 Spiteful Summoners and a Grand Archivist for the joust value. The result is a deck that initially looks like a run of the mill aggro paladin, but if the game goes late I can often OTK my opponent with Murlocs. It's an Aggro-Combo Hybrid deck that is surprisingly effective.

Whoa! That’s a really good idea! I’m going to have to try that!
At bottom ranks, pretty much anny deck can snap a winstreak. But the higher you go, the more you find out that these unique decks are underperforming: buffadin, leyline mage, control shaman. No, surprise does not help wacky decks enough to beat meta decks.
We're not sharing posts to beat meta decks. If we do, then sweet! Semi-viable. If we don't, then who cares? We're having fun. My "123Hunter" that I shared above is a consistent Rank 14 deck. When I'm lower than it, I quickly climb up to rank 14. Once I'm at 14, I never get past! :P
Currently ~57% win rate with about 40 something games. Once I get to 100 games, I can post img of HSDeck tracker

I have an idea for you: You can use Daring Reporter in your nerubian deck because it gets +1/1 when your opponent draws a candle or an ambush. Together with the DK you can fill your opponents deck very easy.
I started playing back in beta and used to run a control priest list that featured 2 copies of Mind Blast and a copy of Holy Fire. I did that to help handle the ooooold handlock list that dominated the ladder. As a consequence I developed a massive crush on Mind Blast, and have been maintaining a deck built around it ever since. It didn't really perform until Blackrock Mountain gave us dragon priest AND Emperor Thaurissan, the tempo shell for which actually fit Mind Blast really well. Lo and behold, Dragon Lord Velen was born, and it took me to rank 51 legend in Season 12 (Post BRM Release meta). The original deck page can be found below this paragraph, although I also keep an updated version of the deck that I use to ladder in wild. The updated list's page can be found in my signature, since the original list is bugged and gets auto-flagged as junk by the site whenever I try to edit it, which I find hilarious.
