Wow - Back when this game was fun and we had one game mode, Tempo Mage was always a fun deck to play because it had a chance against most decks. I used to at least be competitive with it. Im sorry but the loss of secrets and scientist have crippled this deck so badly.
Whoever claims to be advancing in Standard mode with Tempo Mage, lets see the deck!
At rank 7 using a C'Thun tempo mage. It isn't a tier 1 deck, but it's still effective and fun to play. 40 wins away from golden hero and almost every win has been using tempo variations.
There are plenty of builds posted on the front page. Look through them, find one you like, test and then adjust based on your playstyle.
Just played two Mage mirrors in a row--one against C'Thun, one against very odd Leper Gnome / Loothoarder / Engineer face deck. There are definitely options available for people who want to tinker. There's so much burn available, and with Healbot gone it's a lot more effective as a core damage source.
Tempo Mage was one of the most annoying decks in the whole game to play against. I'm happy it's out of rotation. However, if you really want to keep playing it the way it was just play wild
Tempo Mage is temporarily bad while Zoolocks infest the ladder. Once those are rotated out because everyone and their mother is running counters, tempo will be back. The deck lost no core cards (for the no-secret version) and even gained new toys, I don't see it go away anytime soon (while Flamewaker is still in standard).
And anyway, I'm running a classic tempo deck featuring Nexus-Champion Saraad in wild and I'm doing very well. My only loss was a mirror match where after 3 Spellslingers he got Mindgames into Antonidas (fuck!) while I was stuck with Astral Communion (fuck!!) and several turns without minions to play (fuck!!!) then drawing Antonidas but no spell under 4 mana (fuck!!!!).
I dont have Yogg so hes not an option. I have plenty of dust but not sure if I want to spend it on that card. Otherwise, Ive tried a few variants using CThun and it just doesnt work for me. So, maybe a standard tempo Mage. I dunno. Just eems like many of my favorite decks are crippled in standard. Not just Mage either. I dont think people realize how powerful the scientist and secrets were. Now that they are gone.... its just eh.
Can't say I'm sorry to see less Tempo Mage. I never enjoyed losing because Flamewaker just happened to ping the exact targets. Same deal for Knife Juggler.
Rng of that value so early in a match can decide things purely on a coin flip. Some rng is great, but not when it's so impactful
You can switch around Rhonin, Spellslinger, and Sylvanas if you find they're not being effective, but this is the list I did better with (originally I had Thalnos, Ragnaros, and another Faceless Summoner).
The list on my signature (pretty close to the list from dccm) has been working at just above 50% win rate for me in legend, but I wouldn't play it in tournaments or to try top 100. Its just not as good as, say, tempo Warrior.

UGGGH!
When was that? When OP-Drood and Secret-Pala were around? Meta is more versatile now, do you dislike this?
So, the game was fun when you had the best chances with a deck you built a while ago? Uhm, that's not how games works - :D Well, that's not the way living at all works ;D
Well - yeah it was more fun I guess when the meta was more defined. Nothing wrong with liking the game prior to the mode split. I agree that some of the gvg and naxx cards were obnoxious but this new meta has plenty of obnoxious cards and cards that are quite OP/hard to deal with. Same thing for decks. I dont think its that versatile or any moreso than before. I hear what you are saying and maybe I havent adjusted yet or whatever. But I cant deny the fact that Im winning in Wild mode using a few different decks but cant win for shit in Standard right now with anything. Always running into the perfect counter or cant draw what I need. Oh well.
The good news is that I have crafted a Tempo mage deck taking some of the advice here which will hopefully work better.
Ive only been laddering with tempo Mage and I'm currently rank 31 legend. Been as high as top 10 this season. It's very strong if you know how to play it. Don't let people tell you it's not a top tier deck.

Your nickname does sound familiar... might have played you before but not this season. That's quite the feat with tempo mage! How's your win rate looking vs warrior and shaman?

I haven't been keeping track of my win rate unfortunately. It's pretty strong vs both tempo and control warrior. I don't run into too many patron warriors anymore but they're not too bad either. Midrange shaman can be a tough one depending on the draws, but it's definitely winnable. If rng goes your way any game can be a breeze. Face shaman is another story but luckily I don't run into too many of them at high legend. I've actually had quite a bit of success against them now that I've added ooze. If I can ooze a doomhammer I'll probably win.

I think I'll give it a try again :) thanks for the thoughtful reply.

I win due to skill and lose due to bad RNG. :D

Tempo / value - hybrid with lots of burn worked fine for me.
2x arcane blast
2xwyrm
2xfrostbolt
2xcult sorcerer
2xsorc appr
2xarcane int
2xforgotten torch
2xarcane int
2xflamewaker
fireball
2xpoly
2xwater elemental
cabalist tome
2xethereal conjurer
blizzard
emperor
2xfaceless summoner
flamestrike
ragnaros
Only played it till rank 8, prolly needs refinement.
Are you daft? The Tempo mage deck with Yolosaron can beat any deck. They have so much removal it's insane.

Feel free to try my Tempo Mage variant. It's working quite well vs most of the meta (Zoo included).
Thijs running tempo mage being 17-5 from rank 1 to legend with tempo mage. I was a non-believer, but with fewer warlocks, the deck rocks!
This is what he runs:

Nope.
Played from rank 5 to Legend pretty quick.

I wish Valeera had tentacles for arms
