1. Knight of the Frozen Thrones - So innovative, I loved the DK's, and it slowed the META down so much, which I though saved Hearthstone.
2. Journey to Un'Goro - The Quests inspired so much creativity and the Elementals were a nice touch.
3. League of Explorers - So many new deck archetypes from just a few cards. Discover is by far the best mechanic ever.
4. Whispers of the Old Gods - Unlike some of the older expansions, this one aged well. These were a step-up and so fresh for their time!
5. One Night in Kharazan - Not sure why this one is so hated. I loved the theme and I think each class got something decent.
6. Goblins vs. Gnomes - Great cards with interesting decks, but Mech Mage ruined a lot of the game for me...
7. The Grand Tournament - Everything about this expansion failed, but it's still higher up because it inspired my first custom deck. I love Fjola Lightbane
8. The Witchwood - It just... let me down. Nothing new. They just threw in two Legendary minions for everyone and Echo failed.
9. Mean Streets of Gadgetzan - I think this was the best theme and I loved the tribes but the META... oh, the META...
10. Curse of Naxxramas - It was awesome for it's time but unlike WoTOG, this didn't age well. Just look at Maexxna...
11. Blackrock Mountain - LOOK WE ADDED DRAGONS!
12. Kobolds and Catacombs - Everytime a new expansions drops, I play until the end until the next expansion. This one lasted a month. It was so boring.
Damn those are some pretty good pie charts, is there a place where you got it from or did you make these? I'm curios about how balanced the Un'goro meta was since it felt incredibly balanced (aside from warlock being dead).
I just googled the 'hearthpwn HCT (season) (year)' and took a screenshot. I think the Un'goro highlights were face shaman, face warrior, quest rogue and some mediocre control decks? Keep in mind there was a nerf in the middle of it so you might get data that's not really representative of the whole period
Speaking of Un'goro, I believe the expansions that came with a set rotation all have an overrated "balance rating". More change in the cardpool means the honeymoon period of bad decks making it easier to meme will last substantially longer. Nerfs also extend it so I'm happy whenever they nerf almost anything
BEST Journey to Un'goro: the meta was the best and most diverse in this games history sure Quest rogue was popular, but just because it's popular doesn't mean it's good ;) ... Also motherfucking DINOSAURS.
League of Explorers: This brought us not only the discover mechanic (which is the best mechanic ever introduced into Hearthstone), but it also gave us Reno Jackson which introduced my favourite type of decks.
Blackrock Mountain: Dragons myguy, thats all I need to say. Close runner up would be Kharazan because it also gave us some Dragon love and the PvE was really cool
My personal worst would have to be=
WORST Mean Streets of Gadgetzan: Honestly fuck this expansion, not only did it introduce the absolute plague of Jades into the game, but it also made Kazakus only available to 3 classes.... WHYYYY!!!?!?!?!?!???
Kobolds and Catacombs: Not only were only 2 of the legendary weapons used a month after release, but this introduced the bane of this games excistance. The absolute dominating, zero fucks given, Cancerlock... sorry I meant Cubelock. Thank God for Evolve Shaman.
Knights of the Frozen Throne: The death knights were a great idea, but it can't beat actually adding a brand new class to the game. Also the powerlevel of these deathknight cards was all over the place. You had dominating cards like Frost Lich Jaina, Shadowreaper Anduin and Bloodreaver Gul'dan and then cards that hardly if ever saw any play a month after release. Cards like Uther of the Ebon Blade, Thrall, Deathseer and Scourgelord Garrosh. They could have done a lot more.
P.S. I wasn't really playing during The Grand Tournament, Goblins vs Gnomes and Curse of Naxxramas so I can't really talk about them in a personal "best and worst" list.
P.P.S. Witchwood has a great theme, just boring cards. Wispers of the Old Gods was just there for me, never really played it's cards nor did I even attempt the C'thun decks.
Intersting, everybody I know (and everybody on this thread from what I can see) has Un'Goro in their top 3 or top 5. May I ask why you feel that Un'Goro is a bad expansion?
1. Boomsday Project, I know we haven't played it yet, but the best thing about this expansion is there's less broken card than the other expansions besides druid, I love this expansion so much that I would rank this as the best of all expansions, plus a revival of a mech is the best idea ever. I love mechs. I predict this as the best expansion. If not, I would not play Hearthstone especially right now.
2. Whispers of the Old God, this is where my second time playing Hearthstone for a long time, the first one I was playing is during the beta... I gotta admit they make lots of interesting cards. Best second expansion.
3. Journey to Un'goro, beside that I love mechs, I love elementals so much that makes a new interesting archetype to certain classes who use elementals, plus the rotation removes so many annoying cards from standard format, and both of these things makes it the best second expansion again, tied along with Whispers of the Old God.
My worst 3 expansions:
1. Frozen Throne, I dislike this expansion alot, it's the worst of all expansions because I'm not interested in any cards that they are broken as hell.
2. League of Explorer, this expansion filled me with lot's of hatred... I don't remember the meta, but I remember I hate all of these cards including Reno Jackson and Brann bronzebeard (and so many more), these cards were too powerful to flip the game too easily and I disliked it.
3. Mean street, I put it as the least bad expansion because I enjoyed few cards that were more fun than the others. But it's probably the worst of all too. I think everyone knows what happened there after the expansion release, crazy meta.
I'm not going to list all of them in a detailed order; just my favorites at the top and the "worst" expansion at the bottom.
Knights of the Frozen Throne - Hero cards; enough said. Frost Lich Jaina is my favorite Legendary of all time.
Kobolds & Catacombs - Some really fun Legendaries are from K&C. Lynessa Sunsorrow, Kathrena Winterwisp, and Rhok'delar in particular; Spell Hunter is an archetype I was surprised to find very enjoyable. Non-Aggro Hunters are finally getting off the ground. Roguelites like Dungeon Run are right up my alley.
Journey to Un'Goro - Quests are fun, UtG has a number of great cards, and I really enjoy Elemental Mage. This is the expansion that brought me back to Hearthstone, and made it fun for me again.
Goblins vs Gnomes - I love Mechs, and I loved GvG at the time. I still play Mech decks with the old cards, so discovering The Boomsday Project was bringing the tribe back made me very excited. TBP could easily force its way onto this list after this coming Tuesday.
...
Last: The Grand Tournament. I quit Hearthstone shortly after its release, although there were some IRL factors that complicated the matter. It seemed like a boring and frustrating mess and that's not an environment a severely depressed person wants to wallow in. I decided to come back a few weeks after Un'Goro released, which as you can see by the list above I'm satisfied with that decision.
Behold, foolish interlopers! I am commanding this mortal to spread the will of the Scourge throughout the interwebs, encouraging you to seek out me, Archlich Kel'Thuzad! Now coming to you as the tenth class of Hearthstone!
I am a finalist in this Class Creation Competition, so if you could give it a look I would be greatly appreciative <3
Whispers of the Old Gods: This was when I started to actively play Hearthstone and I remember having a blast. The free C'thun was great for a base of a lot of budget decks and the old gods in general still are to this day some of my favorite build around cards. The overall theme was just great.
Knights of the Frozen Throne: Also a great theme and it brought hero cards to the game which (even though sometimes too impactful) are a very fun addition to the game. Furthermore I really enjoyed the single player content. Beating the Lich King with all the 9 classes was a ton of fun.
League of Explorers: Even though I didn't really play a lot when this adventure came out, I remember buying it later on and I had a blast playing with all the cards. Some very fun build arounds and the adventure was fun and challenging and had a very good theme.
Journey to Un'Goro: Again a very fun theme and some very exciting cards. One downside however is that the quests aren't a very good influence on the game. While some of them are still very fun, most of them just aren't good enough and the strong ones can feel uninteractive to play against. I'm also not really a fan of the adapt mechanic as it can be heavily dependent on rng.
The Witchwood: A cool theme and some very fun cards. However, I feel like the odd and even mechanics aren't very healthy for the game. I was excited to play around with them at first but most of the odd and even decks just end up being very aggressive decks that can overwhelm a lot of other decks just by the value they get from their hero power.
Kobolds and Catacombs: Very good singleplayer content and some cool legendaries, but the main problem I have with this expansion is the whole idea of cheating out big things for a small amount of mana, of which the recruit mechanic is the main culprit.
Blackrock Mountain: I wasn't really actively playing during this expansion but it has some cool cards.
Goblins VS Gnomes: This was way before I started playing but I like to play with some of the cards in wild.
Curse of Naxxramas: Same as GvG
The Grand Tournament: Same as GvG but most of the cards are less exciting and so is the theme.
One Night in Karazhan: While the single player content was still fun it was mostly too easy (even in heroic mode) and most of the cards are not very exciting. Plus it has Barnes, which I initially had a lot of fun playing with but nowadays it is one of the most unfair highroll cards in the game.
Mean Streets of Gadgetzan: Unexciting theme and it brought jades and pirate face decks to the game. All the singleton decks also became annoying very quickly during the meta. It still has some cool cards but they were overshadowed by all the unhealthy stuff brought to the game.
I'd like to note that the meta during an expansion is also influenced by previous expansions, meaning that I think it is unfair to hate on an expansion just because you didn't like the meta.
1. TgT - I know everyone hates this one, but for me I saw a lot of deck building potential and I loved the whole inspire theme - I was not competitive this expansion. #InspireControlPriest
2. GvG - Loved the mechs and especially Piloted Shredder. Not so much love for Mech mage tho. #MechSparePartDruid with Gazlow so much fun.
3. Knights of the Frozen Throne - Loved the Deathknights espeacially the one for hunter - Finally I could play a somewhat kind of control hunter deck.
Worst ones:
1. Mean streets of Gadgetzan - By far the most boring and annoying expansion - Never have there been a meta this bad - Rock, paper, scissor - Screw you Pirate Warrior - may you never return. Also Screw Jade druid
2. Naxx - Loved the expansion, but the Face Hunter deck with Undertaker was horrible to play against.
3. Ungoro - Another good expansion ruined by one cancer card - Quest mage was an instant lose for me everytime (Control player here) - This expansion was also destroyed by Jade druid.
1. League of Explorers 2. The Frozen Throne 3. Old Gods
Worst
1. Gadgetzan - Kazakus was great, the rest was poor 2. Karazan - Just poor in general 3. K&C - Probably the best of the worst. I just hated most of the weapons, tbh.
1. Knight of the Frozen Thrones - So innovative, I loved the DK's, and it slowed the META down so much, which I though saved Hearthstone.
2. Journey to Un'Goro - The Quests inspired so much creativity and the Elementals were a nice touch.
