This is THE card of the set for me - I love dragons and it's high time Mage claimed the dragon functionality. It fits much better in Mage than Priest, lore-wise. I think this will be a big winner - Blizz thinks so too - they wouldn't have used it to advertise the set otherwise.
This thing would just be overpowered as hell in current Big Spell Mage and would push the deck to tier 1. Unfortunately, it's only going to be playable once all of Control Mage's survivability rotates out of the format and makes the deck obsolete.
Without knowing the rest of the cards, it's impossible to know whether Control Mage will be a deck. It needs survivability to replace Frost Lich Jaina and the Arcane Artificer, and it needs more mass removal to replace Meteor and Dragon's Fury. If the deck exists, then this is an auto-include. If it doesn't exist, this thing won't see any play.
I will say though that just discovering a spell with a discount was one of the best mage spells in the game, discovering a spell you get to play for free attatched to a 4/12 body that will let you do that every turn is well worth the extra 8 mana. I understand It's not apple's to apples, no need to point out the difference just that I'll eat my hat if this card doesn't see significant play.
I'll just make a small comment on Primordial Glyph: I was one of the people, who considered it being too powerful in JTU. This was due to the fact, that the mage's spell pool was pretty small and the chances of discovering either a removal, burn or a third/fourth Ice Block were big. The spell received an indirect nerf with every upcoming expansion. The devs implemented less flexible and weak spells (Glacial Mysteries, Snap Freeze etc) for mage and diluted the discover pool. And in this regard let's look at the spells, which will stay in the Year of the Dragon:
With all due respect, but the mage's spell pool is diluted with many situational cards. Good outcomes are undoubtly Pyroblast, Flamestrike, Blizzard, Polymorph, Frost Nova, in some casesCone of Cold, Blast Wave and some secrets (+ desperate draw), but the others look really bad and not impactive enough for turn 10+.
By the time you can play Kalecgos chances are solid that you have pulled something that you want or need is the point. About 50%. Also it doesn't need to be "expensive". It can be but doesn't need to be. It could just be a frost nova for stall.
That's all correct. Hmm, come to think of it, I kinda see a deck popping up from this dragon - Burn Freeze Mage. I am thinking how good is to cast Pyroblast for free and have a 4/12 on the board, which offers both tempo and mana cheat on the next turn (if not answered). Not to mention, if mid-range decks buff their minions above the Flamestrike's 4-damage range, the mage player may not survive the minion wave. So it's not control mage, but burn, which will profit from the legendary the most.
Ooof... Been a while since I said "Mage just got a powerful good legendary card!"
You must not have been here for Rastakhan, then.
...Or Boomsday, for that matter.
Anyway, here's the dealio. The neutral Dragon package from Rastakhan is already very powerful. And now they print an extremely powerful card for mage that happens to be a dragon.
This is very much worth looking into. Although my concern is you can roll some very bad options for the battlecry for your first free spell.
This is a 10 drop that can affect the board so it can see play. This into blizzard is really strong. Even if it doesnt survive for another turn you will get your value
If you are somehow referring to my post, I meant how a druid would play Spiteful Summoner, which can summon the 4/12. If this is the case, then that druid player gets to play his UI for free. Same for Priest (with their Mind Controls and Free From Amber).
My first golden craft! Well truth to be told mage needed some love and to a point a clear orientation. Missing tools like the quest, arcanologist, arcane artificier, glyph, dragon's breath , aluneth, meteor , arcane tyrant, frost lich jainna and the baku odd package (maybe forgetting some). Considering the mana wyrm nerf last patch and seeing this card iam seeing that blizz wants to make mage orientation towards late game. Control/Combo/Dragon themed that remains to be seen. It feels good though as a mage player have at least a clear orientation after long time.
Very expensive, but the effect is worth it, both on immediate play AND on ongoing play, imagine the potentials of burst damage, stall with freeze, control with board clears, and a malygos body on the turn played following up with constant value until its removed.
This is what we need in terms of balanced 10 drop cards with a solution to a myriad of problems.
Meh. 10 cost cards need to be game winning to see play. I just don't see it.
Not a terrible card. But doubt it will cut the mustard in a competitive deck.
Note: I say this when only 8 cards are revealed so I might be wrong if a strong spell to combo comes out.
Here is the thing--it isn't actually a 10-cost card in a lot of decks. In a lot of mage decks you end up playing Flamestrike after reaching 10 mana and then pinging face or playing a small minion because you don't have much else to do. Think of this as a 4/12 body with a soft taunt on a Flamestrike or Blizzard (remember, it replaces a card in your hand when you play it, so it only expends one card from your hand despite letting you play a free spell), which is SO much more value than what you otherwise would be playing for that leftover mana.
This card is insanely good. Already this is probably my favorite Legendary of the set, so Hearthstone is going to have to try very hard to top it in terms of coolness and quality. Especially since I'm a mage player specialist and this is the class they give it to? Awesomeness. I'm so stoked.
This dragon would've been mediocre in most other classes but mage will def make a comeback this meta if it gets other decent support cards which I'm just thrilled about. Mage has been mainly absent from the tournament metas for far too long,

I wonder what awesome Mage twinspell will work well with this.
Reno mage with Kalecgos Kazakus and Arch-Thief Rafaam oh man, finally time to compete with reno priest and renolock?
Really happy to see the original Rafaam get some love anyway
Trust me, this is going to be a safe craft if you are planning to play any control oriented mage deck. Obviously insanely powerful in arena.
You must not have been here for Rastakhan, then.

After the first two weeks it won't see play. Except *maybe* if there's a way to cheat it out.
When was the last time any 10-cost card saw regular play?
Must craft if you want to play mage.
.
Ultimate Infestation? Guldan?

This is a good card, will see play in controll mage lists.

It will be a golden craft for sure, if i do not get it for free in the bundle!
would be nice it kalecgos and jaina had some kind of interaction.
he is her former lover.
