I was trying to get Legend after the Expansion was out (Rank 10-5 wasn´t a big deal) and made it straight to Rank 2 with Control Priest but since then i dropped back to Rank 5 and can´t climb anymore. Everytime i change a deck because mine list get countered by bad matchups i just get another multiple pretty much auto concede matchups (If i go to Control Decks i get wrecked by CubeLock and Quest Rogue, if i change to Aggro to have a decent matchup against these decks i get wrecked by Taunt Druid, Even Paladin, Odd Paladin and Control Lock).
Is it really all skill that u need to hit Legend? It feels like i always que into a bad matchup with my decks...
Which decks are consistent against pretty much everything? I wanna try to climb to Legend next month again but with a more consistent deck.
I like to play decks that are a "1b" in their class. By this I mean, 1a warlock is cubelock. I climbed to legend with zoolock, and I'm pretty sure everybody was mulliganing hard for their silence to deal with cubelock. Really gave me an advantage right from the draw.
Other examples would be big spell mage (to tempo mage, although neither are particularly popular right now), miracle rogue (to tempo or odd rogue), or... I donno, can't think of others right now. But if you can find a fun 1b to play, it'll help the climb for sure.
Edit: I should add that when I hit legend the past two months, it felt mostly like luck and time (280 games in March to hit it on March 31, then 120 games to hit legend by April 8). I was playing zoolock, so the games were on average 5 minutes each. It would be a lot longer of a grind to make it with a control deck that takes 10 minutes. I still don't feel like a skilled player by any means, but maybe I don't give myself enough credit haha.
Although probably considered "skill", knowledge and understanding of the meta is key.
You should be able to hit legend purely by netdecking a tier one deck and knowing its matchups, however it will take alot of time to grind unless you know when it is fine to play it and what tech cards to include.
Its grind. Even with 51% winrate you can make it to legend with enough time playing it. I dont want to do that but some people likes it. So join them or accept it.
You need a tier 1 or 2 deck. Preferably not a super slow deck as the games take TOO long. Then time. Time is the biggest factor as you have to play a LOT of games.
With a tier 2 or control deck you definitely need skill, but some brain dead highroll and aggro decks can bring you there without much skill, though skill will still improve you winrate and you will reach legend faster.
When i read it at first i thought OP said "does it really just take time to hit Legend?"
I think that explains my thoughts on the matter. Tho a tier 1 broken deck and just a bit of good rng make the run to legend that much easier.
Lol just noticed that i didnt mention skill. Its definetly a requirement if u run either a tier 3 deck or just a very low winrate deck that is great in the hands of a pro. With a tier 1 deck and 6 hours a day skill aint an obstacle to Legend. Sorry to burst the bubble of every delusional Legend player out there
I like kathrina beast Hunter right now for climbing. It's a solid deck that can win against most decks and is fun to play, and i like zoolock rightnow. Pick 2 good decks u really like to play stick to them and just grind it out.
I had a 65% w/r (37-20) from rank 4 to legend, including 10-3 against warlock and 8-2 against paladin.
Maybe this is the consistent deck you're looking for.
Good luck!
This is what's frustrating
Build a deck to counter Warlock and Paladin, then face them in 23 matches to get a net gain of 13 stars against them, when you needed a total of 17 to hit Legend. So, essentially, you went basically 50% against everything else (with a net gain of 4 stars) and then were blessed to have 50% of your matchups against decks you counter, probably drew well or even, and thus won
I wish I could live in a universe where I make a deck to counter X and Y and then the game gives me X and Y 50% of my next 60 matches, all with good draws and luck so that I can get the 75% WR that I designed my deck to do

Well it was a meta-call I made at that time. I built a deck that was strong against cubelock and odd paladin, because I was betting I would see those two the most, and that's exactly what happened. Sure there's luck involved, but it was a good call at that time.
I'll freely admit you probably won't get the same results now though, with even paladin, taunt druid and quest rogue becoming more popular.
Skill is not required... but it does make it a lot less painful. There's a big difference in going from 5 to legend in 2 days vs 5 to legend in 10 days... the difference is usually skill.
But meta is basicly 50% of Paladins and Warlocks and 50% of other classes so it's a very good strategy. Knowledge of meta - that's the point.
So if you make a deck to beat these two classes and then get 2 warlocks and 3 paladins in 20 games, you could go absolutely nowhere or even lose stars depending on how you perform in the other 15 matches - and that's assuming you pull the 70-80% WR in those 5 games which is not a large enough sample size to adequately measure how your deck actually performs, and leaves you incredibly open to RNG in the mull and draws)
It's all an RNG crap shoot no matter how you slice it, and it's annoying
To get legend with a curve deck, basically if you know enough about HS to reach rank 5, it's only a matter of putting in a couple of more hours to get legend. The same can basically be said about cubelock, because while the deck does take brains to play well, it's currently so broken in terms of power level that you don't really need to know that much to play it to an "acceptable" level. The deck is way harder to play to higher legend rankings once you are legend though, as people are much better at playing against it there.
To get legend with something like control/combo priest, taunt druid, etc(basically any tier 2 deck which takes brains to play) you do need to be decent at the game, but time is still quite a big factor, especially as games will take longer.
I feel like climbing is just a big luck fest. If you get lucky and keep getting good matchups then you can go higher, but if you keep getting bad matchups you will fall. Same concept with draws. Hearthstone ladder is just a big RNG fiesta.

No skill required, just time to grind.
For what profit is it to a man, if he gains the world and loses his own soul?
It's a combination of time, luck, and knowledge (if you can call that skill).
use the deck tracker to see which opponents you face

Don't mind me, just the UK National Champion.
And for those saying "luck" is required for getting legend, it is not.
Luck can help you go on a big winstreak and hit legend faster. However all that matters to consistently hit legend is skill.

Sorry for the shameless advertising, but I hit legend with this deck:

This game (besides copying decks) takes a brain, and that's what I always loved about this game.
Every deck has a strategy, so your answer is basically yes
