Just wanted to start a thread, if one did not already exist, discussing potential candidates for the upcoming Hall Of Fame rotation right before the new "year" starts. Historically, this special rotation seems to have just followed a regular nerf pattern where T5 came to understand that certain cards were meta defining where they used to be flex picks. Each level of rarity has been effected, so I'll list a few and give an explanation to start.
Common:
Scavenging Hyena: We have already seen a resurgence of this card that has had serious upside. A 2 mana 2/2 with an effect is by no means broken. However, with the creation of the rush mechanic and the amount of small charge/rush beasts in next years rotation already we will potentially see a nerf or a move out of standard for this card. It will definitely be a powerhouse if any more low cost beasts will instant attack capacity are printed.
Flame Imp: this card is great in aggressive Warlock. It has always been a staple, and since it matches the self-damaging warlock it isn't really overpowered. But if it is limiting design space it could definitely get the boot. Blizzard has made room before due to dominance of classic cards for strong archetypes. (looking at you Mana Wyrm)
Honorable Mention for card draw. Maybe one card will see the move, but I highly doubt it. With the creation of Mecha'thun it seems that printing anymore card draw, especially neutral, only helps decks that wish to play it. The decks are extremely non-interactive, and card draw will only carry that play-style further.
Rare:
Savannah Highmane: Say it ain't so. This one will upset so many people that I'm afraid to include it. Personally I love the card. The "Hunter gets a legendary for 100 dust" meme has been alive before and could very well come back. Highmane is starting to see some play, but will Hunter be able to stay dominant on rotation? If so, this card may be moved.
Kirin Tor Mage: death to Tempo Mage, enough said. (Although I'd love for it to come back, but the community would rage)
Divine Favor: This card is near the top of my list for purpose of annoyance alone. It is a huge advantage to draw potentially heavy as a reward for playing out your hand. In Odd this has proven to be a useful to refill an already value oriented deck. If better cards are coming to Paladin, and especially odd, this card may need a rotation to stop the value onslaught of odd paladin.
Doomguard: This is a maybe. While it isn't disruptive on its own, it can be overbearing with copy effects. If more cube style cards are printed, it may be good to do even more than a standard rotation for this card.
Epic:
Sea Giant: I think this card has a chance to rotate. It hasn't been meta-defining nor caused any big issues. But the control shell leaving Hearthstone is considerately large and may bring aggro heavily into the picture. Decks may go wider than usual and thus the odds to place a low cost Giant on the field increase for the Sea version. I think Mountain Giant is still safe unless strong control cards are re-introduced for each class on this first expansion of 2019.
Preparation: I would be sad to see this go, but understand if it did. Prep is added to most Rogue decks and rightfully so. It is extremely powerful and will undoubtedly be a strong tool in a more aggro pirate deck that may resurface after rotation. It has been a long-standing auto include card and one of the few "class power cards" that hasn't been adjusted (actually buffed in early release). Maybe it will finally be too strong to consider keeping in standard?
Legendary:
I'm going to start by making a hopeful guess that no class legendaries are removed by Hall of Fame. Although they all have defining attributes, T5 would have to create a new classic legendary for a rotating classes' card. This seems like a waste of design space, and the new card would have to be strong enough to hold weight in classic, but weak enough to not overshadow the next expansions cards to come.
Bloodmage Thalnos: Yeah if card draw is gone from my previous point-this is the one. Bloodmage has proven time and time again to be a must include in any control style deck that has some form of combo. Must include cards are heavily in danger during rotations, because play rate and power are the most viewed statistics that seem to shape balance decisions.
Leeroy Jenkins: I may actually cry if this happens. However, I keep mentioning a potential swing in a more "basic aggro" meta emerging with the new year. Must includes will definitely contain Mr. Jenkins in the card pool. It has already been adjusted before, but that won't stop it from being in every face deck ever to exist (if odd is in the parameters).
As a final point. I am also going to assume that NO dragon will be removed. The Maly decks can certainly get repetitive, but I think from a lore and creativity perspective each dragon serves a point.
It was long winded, but let me know what you all think! list a few cards that you think are a likely candidate for the next rotation. Remember the cards have to be in the classic (and I suppose maybe basic) format to move to Hall of Fame. Please keep this topic as all threads exploratory threads are meant to be: a discussion! Play nice and have fun!
I mean I could have included Doomsayer, but I didn't know how big I wanted to make the thread and didn't want to keep playing the "seen in x decks" card. To be fair control isn't really defined by a ton of classic cards. So there isn't really a huge adjustment curve to those cards. Not to mention how small classic is compared to expansions. On the other point, we don't know what the future cards look like. I listed cards that I felt can be exploited further in the future. I think you're assuming I treated HoF as a replacement nerf and that isn't how it was designed to be.
I don't think that any cards right now requires a move into the Hall of Fame. Not even Leeroy or Malygos. Bloodmage is strong yes, but not strong enough and played enough to require a move into the Hall of Fame; and definitively not strong enough.
So no, i don't expect any cards moving into the Hall of Fame this Rotation. But if they would, then i think that malygos would be the first choice.
You make a good point with the hyena, its a bit like mana wyrm, and now with the rush minions, its pretty insane. Then again, so are a lot of other cards.
I actually hope they do the opposite, and reintroduce some cards like rag and sylvanas. A lot of strong copying effects will leave standard, and i think its a great time to un-hof them. Dont it will happen, but one can dream.
Malygos might be hofed, just because it has been a staple in otk and combo for years now.
I forgot to mention that yes this does obviously rely on there actually being a Hall of Fame addition. But since each year there has been inclusions I made the assumption they will continue this year.
I could see Leeroy being HOF’d, since he’s an auto-include in aggro decks across classes (besides even shaman). That’s exactly the kind of thing that they should be looking to eliminate from standard.
I think scavenging hyena could maybe use an adjustment, but not HoF. Given the prevalence of cheap rush beasts (especially with Halazzi giving you up to 10 1/1s with rush), it’s too easy to summon it and buff it to unreasonable levels on one turn. I think this could be fixed by removing his health gain. That way you still have a potentially explosive play, but it doesn’t become so hard to remove.
Ive seen a lot of people mentioning Malygos, but I think that would be a real shame. Malygos presents interesting deckbuilding challenges for different classes and I think there’s a place for those sorts of decks in any meta.
What a load of nonsense. And the obvious control player bent to it is the shocker of the century. You people.
Loving these comments. I play basically only aggro. Cubelock is my only control deck out of about 8. Please review the classic cards and tell me your list. Add as many control cards as you'd like if you give at least something of an explanation. I said this was a discussion. Discuss.

None of them. I mean people are saying Prep, but what is the point? It's not like it can be used to churn out a board and its not like rogue would ever get a card like that (Call of the Wild). Leeroy comes up, but the downside make it only useful as a finisher so it's basically a Fireball that can't break taunt. I agree on Maly, decks that try to use it (Clone Priest, lol) are an inconsistent mess and Tier 3 at best.
Preparation and Divine Favor are on the top of the list. I don't think Leeroy will get HOFed. It is in every aggro, without it aggro decks will be heavily crippled. Even though some people would love that, I don't think Blizzard wants a no aggro meta.

See now at least we are talking. I made a fat list because obviously only 2 or 3 cards total will get removed. Otherwise, we are out of classic cards in a couple years. A lot of people are bringing up Maly as well. It was a consideration but I didn't add it to my list. I agree entirely with you on leeroy. I think Preparation gets hit because Blizzard has been targeting core cards that belong to the untouchable sets and Rogue hasn't been hit. I think that card has the highest chance of being a candidate.

Malygos or Leeroy
Divine Favour kinda does deserve Hall of Fame treatement, but otherwise the cards are pretty fine imo.
Add me up if you're looking for someone to play friendly matches with! I play on EU. LuckyScrub#2745

Please, HoF Preparation and finally Valeera can get great class spell cards in expansions, this card is a curse for rogue class.
Let's just remove all the playable cards and remove the restriction on Magma Rager so you can have 30 in your deck...
Seriously if they keep HoFing cards the basic set will become pointless.
Then again I much rather they copied the rotating core sets from MtG.
Spicing things up with having to make new sets. Not having to nerf or HOF basic set cards since they will rotate again

I wouldn’t trust blizzard to print some good rogue spells for at least another year, even if prep is rotated.

Free to try and find a game, dealing cards for sorrow, cards for pain.
