I think people are underestimating the new mage cards. I think there's potential for a tier 1 mage deck, and definitely potential for one or more tier 2 mage decks in WW.
The big spell mage deck didn't lose anything significant and gained a bunch of improvements.Aluneth is still a crazy card and will carry tempo mage despite losing a bunch of secret synergy - my money is on a build with Vex Crow and small spells + Archmage Antonidas. I think the sleeper of the set is the aggro minion mage combining Book of Specters and Aluneth with zoo style minions and burn spells as finisher - I think this might be the top aggro deck of the set.
Yes, Mage is loosing Iceblock. Yes, it's also loosing a crap ton of other core cards for all of its archetypes, but as they say with new comings come new goings. The new set gives some really interesting options to the elemental mage archetype & I think it has a lot of potential. Here is my theorycraft of the archetype, I think it will look similar to my version, or it will be a version which also runs frostbolts & fireballs for the burn if it proves to have a more aggressive version. Any feedback or comment would be really appreciated. So would an upvote ;)
Well the thing is my version of Big spell mage is, except the "Big spell" part and Jaina, different from most of them out there. Tried fitting Ice Block and my win rate plummeted cause I had to fit the secrete package that ruined my game plan.
Played few version with Pyroblast and it was useful. Either for high roll on Dragons Fury or actually closing the game. Tho cause I played Medivh it was slow, on that I agree. Have few ideas on why it can fit. Either cause high roll Spiteful Summoner or one is to ignore the lack of Firelands Portal and fit value with Servant of Kalimos (which I had in few version to out last Cube/Control locks).
But my current version is Medivh'less and has Bright-Eyed Scout. Few thins are achieved with that. 1. I have a 4 drop 2. What ever I draw is on curve (can back lash), example is playing Frost Lich Jaina on 5 or having a clear board on 10 with Dragons Fury + 5 cost Dragoncaller Alanna. <--best things that can happen. 3. Everything else is fine too, I dont mind having Blizzard on 5 also
Anywho, point is the archetype is not dead, mage is not dead. Before secret mage was cool, everyone dissed me it was bad, turned it was good. Even before this current XPAC it was smooth sailing to Rank 5 when Jades where a thing. It's not mages problem that Blizzard pushes some classes to god like status
@Delfunk83, I agree, that card has potential. It can disrupt Cubelock which I proved to my self with Tortollan Primalis when I was messing with it. And this is much better since it's on 4, and it's only secrets.

Nice man! We share ideas, and you've got even better ones! I sincerely feel that the Ice Block Secret package was a hinderance to the deck, when Arcane Artificers are pumping you up with some great armor and Jaina granting lifesteal.
I hadn't thought of Bright-Eyed Scout, but man I see the potential now that you mention it.
I feel like some of the worst match-ups have been super volatile aggro starts, like paladins, so we must see how viable aggro decks will be flooding the meta, and Big Mage could be a great deck. Of course it's a bummer we didn't get any new shiny big spells, but sometimes you don't have to reinvent the bike I guess.
"Lesser"? This is best card mage get in this expansion and one of more powerful card mage get in Standard, only better is Glyph.
1 mana 2/2 minion + 3 manas secret you discover, what adapt to the situation.
All other cards in this expansion are conditional goods or make severe restrictions in your deck.
Are you the guy who was whinning about Cubelock on the other thread ? Why am I not surprised that you think this card is strong xD I guess Lady in White is in your top 5 aswell.
Odd minion mage can work and u still have silences and potion of poly vs warlocka
Not sad about aggro secret mage dying. It was worse than aggro minion based decks like pirate warrior murlocadin and druid token. U couldn't defend against spells burst to face. Broken bozos

Odd/even decks are only good in control decks if your upgrade is better than the deathknight upgrade. For example, if you were to find a dude paladin deck that was aiming to win a grind game by running your opponent out of aoe and sticking a board of dudes to buff with lvl up/quarter master in wild, you would prefer Baku's upgrade to the deathknights or genn's because it lets you easily go wide on the board.
The opposite is true for mage. As much as Baku's upgrade is good for value and genn's can give you lots of tempo over time, Jaina will always be the best hero power for a control deck. Odd mage isn't going to be a true control deck because you will always turn to Jaina for that. That isn't to say that you won't run Jaina in odd mage, rather that you won't turn to baku when you are looking to make a control mage, even though Baku gives really good value over time. This means that odd mage is it's own archetype that needs to be treated as such. I think odd mage is going to be rather face oriented using the hero power to close the game and deal with the board whilst your minions go face/trade well. This is technically viable with the cards we have currently, it just wont use cards you are used to using in mage and it will likely play a little like face hunter. How good it is precisely is another question all together, especially without access to either frostbolt or fireball. But with intellect, runes, arcane missiles, the new 3mana 5 damage arcane missiles and the new spell damage card. I don't think it seems to implausible.
As for control mage/big mage I have never played it with ice block or fire lands. I wasn't that interested in making a 100% optimal deck and I dislike those two cards. I honestly highly doubt they change your winrate an awful amount. Besides the addition of voodoo doll is a very welcome one.
I cannot speak to the efficacy of the idea of a minion mage. It will be refreshing to get away from the warrented obsession mage players have with mana wyrm. It's too good of a card not to include and that makes opening plays from mages rather polarised because if you have it and they don't have an immediate answer your opponent can probably write off that game as a loss.
Apologies for the wall of text but I am actually not that dissatisfied with the state of mage. I welcome your opinion on the subject as feeling unhappy is something no one ought to be able to argue you out of. I do hope that a few days into the expansion you are feeling better about the whole thing.
People saying any Control Mage archetype is going to work without ice block...WHAT? LUL
2nd,mages decks have been cancer since the beggining ..Mage was always relevant, never in the life of hearthstone mage was a t3 class..This class was always staple in the metas, maybe not t1,but at least t2 and easy to climb with..
Freeze mage/Mech mage/Tempo mage/Freeze mage again/burn mage/quest mage/secret burn mage...Tell me one archetype of these that isnt cancer..And most of these where aggro or control. Now mage has no aggro and no ice block..It will need to play a mid range archetype which sucks for mages. And im really proud to finally see no mage for a few months.
Why would a girls class be staple in metas anyway?
And anyway, they took enough time to nerf ice block.Im happy it did finally happen though.

I would rather play against almost any of the decks you mentioned than be bored to death by control warrior. The exception is freeze mage, which is not worse than control warrior, just equally bad for different reasons.

At least CW had little to no RNG besides Elise back in the days. And once you lost board and he got armor, you knew the game was over so you could simply quit.
Mage is full of rng.And ice block is a card that should never have been created.Winning games you are supposed to lose is cheating .
Maybe you are a weeb and you actually trying to defend mage...

First, you don't seem to know what a weeb is, so maybe find out before using the word.
Second, if you hate RNG, this is clearly not the game for you. Seriously.
Third, there is no "supposed to" win or lose. If you win, you win. Even if RNG is involved, you were rewarded for taking a chance, which is a perfectly valid way to play.

It also gets destroyed by Combo Priest. And it's not because of MC. There's plenty of way to beat warlock.
Try spiteful mage with Arugal and Jaina. Only decent deck I could think of.
Here is the deal.
