Been playing a ton of secret mage lately just to get the Dream of going first and opening with Kabal Lackey+Counterspell to counter the opponent's quest, i've countered my fair share of Crystal Core but never managed to counter any first turn quest .
I've seen it done in videos before, but part of the problem is you have to go first for it to work at all, and if that happens your opponent can test for Counterspell with the coin. Even if it turns out not to be Counterspell they can dagger and kill the Lackey so the coin doesn't go to waste. Unless you're playing versus serious scrubs, there's pretty much no point trying to do this.
It's happening more and more though that Rogue will lead with Fire Fly or something, with plans to Quest through with something else. I have seen it at least a couple of times now. Obviously, you slam Counterspell if that happens and you're playing second.
The dream counterspell is actually to counter the Crystal Core. That way, they've wasted all of their time and effort trying to bounce things, and then paid 5 mana to do nothing. It's far more satisfying IMO and also far more reasonable. You'd have to be absurdly stupid to play your quest T1 with a secret down. However, I've already caught two people by CSing their Crystal Core as people often get far too greedy for their own good and don't even bother checking.
It happens, but with the fall of popularity of Quest Rogue, the combo is less and less appealing. I for one have pulled it off turn 1 for the quest and the turn the core was played. It just became way to unweildy to play on the ladder. A tournament maybe, but not ladder.
I gave a mage my warlock portal reward once by way of Paveling book into mana bind. I was in a really bad spot and probably couldn't win if it was mana bind or CS so I choose not to play around it
My favorite was when a QR completed his quest using a Novice Engineer when they had 10 cards in their hand. Quest completes, and Crystal Core disappears into oblivion. Rogue says "oops" and concedes. I laughed for a good long time after that one.
Ive never gotten it turn one but have stopped plenty of vanishes and cores from dropping leading to easy victories. CS and SB destroy QR is you play them correctly.

so has anyone gotten the dream yet?
I've never tried to counter it turn one due to coin. I have, however, countered the actual spell multiple times.
I countered a Crystal Core once. To be fair, he hit my counterspells twice with either bounces or a mimic pod. I drew a third with a Primordial Glyph and had it waiting for him. To add insult to injury, I put a Mana Bind on top of the counterspell, so I gained the quest reward that he lost.

Yes - done it. Also LOL'ed today when warlock opponent discarded his own Portal quest reward by playing Succubus.

I've thrown this out twice now, even though both times the Rogue threw out the coin and then the quest. But still it's fun to know I burned his coin.
Honestly, the better play is to Counter his turn 2 or 3 play when he tries to boomerang that 1/1.
hello
