When Standard/Wild modes was release they said the classic set always will be around but tons and tons of nerfs and HoF turn a lot of cards in garbage tier.
Just rotation everything and release new core expansions like MTG and problem solved.
Classic cards that are staples can be problematic. Fiery War Axe was the strongest weapon for warrior in the early game. There was no way Blizzard was going to print an alternative that wasn't overpowered in its own right. Nerfing (or rotating card to Wild) is the only solution possible.

And because of that nerf control warrior without Baku will never be viable.
Ice Lance had two components. One, freeze an enemy. Two, if it's already frozen, do something else.
Ice Lance did four damage. Four damage is worth about 3-4 Mana, 3 if it's to a minion, probably closer to four if it's face. This card was deemed too powerful, so it was sent to the HoF.
Now, we are being told the HoF is for cards that don't really fit the class ideology. Well, if it fit the class ideology, let's just nerf it instead.
Here is the thing. Ice Lance is about freezing dudes, and dealing damage with spells. That is entirely what mage is about. Freeze and burn. So why wasn't it just nerfed? Raise it's cost one Mana or drop it to 3 damage?
I'll tell you why. So they could print f---ing snap freeze. Snap freeze is freeze a guy, if he is frozen, do something else. That something else is destroy a minion. Destroy a minion is worth 4-5 Mana. Granted it's a less bursty card, but it's not that different.
Ice Lance didn't go to the HoF because it was overpowered. It went because if was a do everything freeze card. Now that it's gone, they can fill your packs with icicle and snap freeze.
Moral of the story. Nerfing classic cards is all about selling new cards. So be transparent blizzard. Just rotate the classical set like Kibler says, and print cards and take our money. But don't present bs design philosophy and expect me to swallow it

EXACTLY what he said
1 thing i cant' stand is when cards do the EXACT SAME THING as another card after a nerf.
- innervate is now the coin and rogue also has a card "the coin"
-fiery war axe is the same but worse as "eaglehorn bow" / shadowblade / "necrium blade:.. for wild "king's defender" / rallying blade / powermace / sharpe fork that 7 different 3mana 3/2 weapons
- new rogue card "pilfer" worse version of "hallucination"

You suffer from Kibler-stone. It's from drinking too much Kibler-juice.
I actually agree at this point just remove all of the classic cards. They keep removing cards from classic to hog and never bring any back. Just send them all to wild and call it a day. Instead of slowly moving them or needing them. Just getting old.
Designing cards is no easy task. It's easy to sit on the outside looking in and say "you need to do it this way". A bunch of Armchair referees who don't know much except for playing video games.
A lot of work goes into releasing 135 new cards every 4 months. Balance, effectiveness, fun, interactive, doesn't break the game. The only reason Kibler says stuff like that is because he wants you to watch his stream, and gobble up all of that salty spew.
The reason Hearthstone is still around is because they make changes and throw out card nerfs. Tell me that you enjoy playing against Emerald Spellstone. Or Cold Blood. How tired are you of seeing Flametongue Totem? They need to release new cards, and yes there will be some bad cards along with the good cards. It's science. How many fools think that each card in a set has to be some kind of Immortal god?
I have yet to see a nerf that didn't have some impact on the meta. I hated Pirate Warrior, Quest Rogue, Machine gun Anduin, Druid, Shuddercrock, odd paladin.
Every time the nerf bat hits, new cards come out of the doldrums. Cards like Grol the shark that see no play because of Cold Blood.

The better question is, why would you print an alternative that fits the same role? I mean, isn't the idea of basic cards that you define core strengths and weaknesses?
When Warrior has some good weapons, you can say that this is what the class does best, so let's design cards with that in mind. Removing these traits to "open up design space" only means that in the long run, every class has everything and no longer feels distinct and unique. You remove core strengths, compensate it by adding stuff you couldn't add before, and move away from what the class should be about. I'm sure some players want to play Zoo Warrior and Fatigue Hunter for some reason, but one of the main selling points of Hearthstone, having different classes, is kinda lost (at least in Wild), when this is how you feel about good cards, whether they are evergreen or not. From a design perspective, I think it's better to have cornerstones that limit what you can and can't do with a class instead of a blank sheet that let's you do whatever you want.
Besides, I am not really sold on the argument that there was "not enough space" with a 2 mana War Axe. Woodcutter's Axe was a bit weaker, but had an effect for specific minions. So, you have a new tool for a decktype that may or may not be better down the line. Odd Warrior also couldn't use a 2 mana War Axe (ok, they don't use the 3 Mana Axe either), so there are ways to introduce decktypes that won't use specific cards but have other strengths in return. If can't see how it's "not possible" to avoid nerfs or print alternatives, maybe you lack the creativity. Besides, nobody guarantees the game is around long enough for these problems to even show.
Although I don't really like nerfs to Equality and Cold Blood, I think they are ok and are good for the game.
They stopped printing OP cards during the year of the raven (after releasing extremely powerful cards in the year of the mammoth sets) and started to nerf classic cards more often. Such strategy should make new expansions be way more impactful. Instead of classic set determining how decks are build, it will be much better if new sets do that instead.
I guess i shouldn't expect more from Activision - Blizzard.
The only nerf I really agree with is the Spellstone.

I wouldn't say never. Baku is another completely different can of worms. Not many cards are better than +4 armor for 2 mana every turn.
I want to talk about ice lance.

I am so glad equality got nerfed
I usually agree with nerfs but this time I have to say: THE MADMAN!
Spellstone is the only one that needed a nerf and it only needed it because of Deathstalker Rexxar and Zul'jin.

just to name a few
honestly i dont like any of these nerfs at all. the next expansion better make up for this or its really going to turn me off from the game

Paladin has an effective AOE in the form of Sunkeeper Tarim and 2 Stonehill Defender to discover him anyway.

Lol
"Let's nerf every Classic card and free card to the ground so we can sell them back to players in expansions!"
Or you could just, you know, Craft them....
