Again another Update on a Discard Warlock Deck with the newest expansion, The Boomsday Project!
It obliterates all kinds of control decks. I've spent a lot of dust and time (actually most of my HS playing time) to push the Discard Archetype, trying to make it work. So here are my thoughts about every single card in the deck along with the theory behind it and why they are part of the deck.
All necessary Class Cards
The following cards are must includes that (I think) are essential for the Midrange version of Discard Warlock:
Our Win-Condition. Ideally the imps overwhelm the opponent until you can finally deal the killing blow. Nether Portal is quite resistant to any boardclears since the imps just keep respawning and the portal cannot be removed from the board. Constant pressure to the enemy.
The card that makes all the difference. Discarding cards from the bottom of your deck makes a huge difference instead of constantly losing good cards in hand. For 1 Mana you can finish 50% of the quest, if Clutchmother Zavas is drawn you can keep her (+ she is getting buffed) or draw some cards that you need to finish off your opponent (Soulfire). Just great!
Very good card overall. Brings you closer to your discard cards and generates a body as well. Always play first, never discard! You don't want to add him to Cruel Dinomancer's pool.
Great card. Thins your hand automatically while being a strong early threat on the board. Be really careful when to play it though. If you are 2 ticks away from quest completion better discard it. If you have Clutchmother Zavas in your hand, be extra careful. This is best played with an empty hand so there are no cards to lose.
Great in combination with Howlfiend. Same as Chittering Tunneler it negates the downside of losing a lot of cards. Don't hesitate to play it early on vs. aggro. Behind a Lakkari Felhound this can do some work.
This is a though one. Now one might say it's not worth losing a lot of health with this guy. The goal is to discover Discard cards or other low-mana spells you can savely discard:
3) or simply to have a spare card to discard. Since it's never a minion but a spell discarding useless and cheap spells doesn't interfere with Cruel Dinomancers plans either.
4) You can even Discover The Soularium which is awesome.
She is actually a decent body when played from an empty hand. And she just does her job if you are 1 Discard away from quest completion + decent body.
The Felhound finishes 1/3 of your quest and can protect you or other minions like Blood-Queen Lana'thel) quite well.
Now most people find this card quite underwhelming. If used right though it's a real game changer. She is basically the main tool to survive aggro. The queen basically has a soft taunt. As you have a lot of high value minions in your deck chances are your opponent already used a removal on a card like Doomguard or Lakkari Felhound (especially aggro decks). You really really need to time it right when to place her. She shines vs. aggro since most of the time your opponent has to send at least two minions into her so she heals at least twice the amount. Always try to keep and play her vs. aggro. She can easily heal you back to 30 health. And she works with Cruel Dinomancer too. Play Stuff like Cruel Dinomancer first to bait out removal then play her the next turn. Time it right and you're golden. She can even sometimes act as a finisher when buffed by Doomguard or Soulfire.
This is a card that might look weak first but it gets more value with the high-stat demons in your deck. There are certain card types that can be resummoned with this guy quite effectively which are Deathrattle, End of Turn cards and cards with ongoing effects like Blood-Queen Lana'thel. The dream would be Cruel Dinomancer into Cruel Dinomancer for infinite 5/5s. Also Deathwing, Lord Jaraxxus or Doomguard are nice targets to resummon as well.
Absolutely neccessary for Quest completion. Great card overall.
After a lot of trial and error this card seems to fit better in an anti-control deck. And it has synergy with Drakkari Enchanter.
Mulligan for this only vs. Taunt or Control decks and try to finish your quest asap. Be really careful when to play this. Never play it on curve if you don't have to.
Great removal tool early game and as a finisher in late game.
I was looking for another card that would help me find Discard-Cards. First I went with Sense Demons but it would give me 2 demons where 1 would most often discard the other. Dark Possession was the answer. Not only can you damage your own high health minions (specifically Howlfiend) but also find another Lord Jaraxxus in case you discarded him.
Use him to add more pressure to your enemy along with Nether Portal. He can also heal you back up if your opponent keeps hitting your face, ignoring your board. Just a great Class legendary and more useful than Bloodreaver Gul'dan in this deck.
This card was made for that archetype. You will have no cards in hand for 3/4 of the game and copying another win condition of your opponent often just makes your enemy concede. Especially great in late game when your portal already pumps out demons.
It's almost always bad to play Cataclysm as soon as you can as you lose initiative. Better use your minions like Lakkari Felhound or Howlfiend to stay ahead. Deciding when to play Cataclysm is very hard at the beginning but you will find out quite fast. Only play it on an empty board if you are 100% sure you are facing a control player. Once your hand is empty and your Quest is complete play your Discarding cards first and then use your hero power to refuel, so you can play Doomguard or Lakkari Felhound without the Battlecry downside.
Also ALWAYS remember which cards you discarded so you can maximize Cruel Dinomancers effect. Basically you want to get rid of your hand asap every game.
Gotta say the deck is super hard to master. If you want to rank up you really need to know your enemy to be able to make the right card choices. Playing a Howlfiend on turn 3 vs. an aggro deck mostly loses you the game. Playing Blood-Queen Lana'thel when you don't know if your opponent has already used up all his removals loses you the game. It punishes you asap. So take your time with turns, try to figure out what your opponents cards are and play accordingly.
I had one hilarious game vs. Quest Priest. He already used up Shadow Word: Death twice. Deathwing came down and he could heal up with Amara, Warden of Hope as often as he wanted, Deathwing just kept hitting face. After about 6 hits he died miserably :D.
I have to say that it performed pretty damn well. I've killed Hadronox Druid, Quest Rogues and a lot of Paladins that swarmed the board. I even managed to kill off some heavy Voidlord warlocks which where in Bloodreaver Gul'dan form but still couldn't heal enough to survive the ongoing Nether Imp threat. Give it a try!
I was with you until you listed Nat Pagle. Not only is the card horribly anti-tempo (which you can't afford in Discard) but also is drawing cards the least of your worries...in fact, Discardlock draws so much that extra draw is complete overkill and might end up losing you the game
I was with you until you listed Nat Pagle. Not only is the card horribly anti-tempo (which you can't afford in Discard) but also is drawing cards the least of your worries...in fact, Discardlock draws so much that extra draw is complete overkill and might end up losing you the game
It's actually the only slot I'm not sure about. Replace it with Voidwalker to protect Spiritsinger Umbra or Malchezaar's Imp and the problem's solved ? Actually it really helped me get the combos I need and with 35 cards in the deck any card draw is good ?
I think the problem with your deck is that you focus too much on the discard cards and don’t have any removal. Control warlock is normally quite strong against aggro, so I think it’s best if you have half your deck devote to aoe such as hellfire, defile, twisting etc and the other half for the discard theme card
I'm having fun and trying my best with Lakkari Sacrifice since Un'goro has launched and it seems that the Midrange way is still a failure but the Control version is finally viable because of Cataclysm.
But there is no point to use Cataclysm in your deck, at all. Your hand will be almost empty in every turn. The mayor point of this card's text is the "whole hand discard" effect, the clear is a sweet bonus. Your discard minions are tempo cards (like Lakkari Felhound, Doomguard), so you don't need a cheap full clear. It is like running Twisting Nether in Zoo. You have to decide what do you want to play: Midrange or Control. If you do the midrange way, then simply cut Cataclysm out. This is just an advice based on my experience, but I really like your ambition, just keep trying, don't give up man!
If you are intrested how the control version could work please check my deck and its guide in the description. Good luck!
*UPDATE* Removed most of the too slow Deathrattle cards and replaced them with more tempo cards like Howlfiend and Rattling Rascal combined with Treachery. It works way better now.
I made some changes after a lot of games. Maybe I'm a bit late to realize that our Quest Reward synergizes with Drakkari Enchanter. And since we have one of the best End of Turn cards in our arsenal Despicable Dreadlord which is
A) a perfect anti-aggro tool
B) can be resummoned by Cruel Dinomancer without losing its ability
and C) just looking cool
I decided to make some changes to the deck to enhance our late game. Maybe Drakkari Enchanter was just printed because of our Discard Archetype ?
Interesting Deck! You have no Cruel Dinomancers in there since there are some small minions like Kobold Librarian and Flame Imp that makes total sense. But I fear you won't finish the quest fast enough without Lakkari Felhound and another Cataclysm. But its more Control oriented anyways so thats fine I guess. Succubus is a bit slow since she only discards one card, but vs. Control Priest she is very very good due to the 4 attack. I'm sure we will get some more discard support with the final reveal stream. Hopefully we can cut Kobold Librarian entirely for card draw.
Dr. Morrigan is another good candidate for Discardlock. It's very very sticky (imagine you Discard her, then Cruel Dinomancer resummons her and once she is gone another minion hits the board). Plus she works with Cataclysm too. Control decks will have a hard time with that board. Updated the deck.
Alright fellow Warlock Players. After lots and lots of playing the last days I went more and more aggressive with the deck, trying to remove unnecessary cards to replace them with more suitable ones that push the Discard Quest further.
If we think a moment about the quest in general, we want to discard as fast and as efficient as possible. With Wrath of the Lich King Howlfiend was added to the collection and after countless games I have to say this card is actually the most important one in the deck. Most often than not you lose because you don't draw into your discard-cards and having 2 Howlfiends early on on the board with less cards in hand than you need to discard to finish your quest is the ideal situation.
But then I sometimes didn't draw into one and I felt that my deck was still to late-game heavy anyways. Dr. Morrigan has no room in Discard either, she is meant to be played in a more Deathrattle Recruit like Warlock.
So I tried the card:
and oh boy: With Dark Possession we can Discover another Howlfiend or any Discard Demon (or even Lord Jaraxxus if we Discarded him) . Also if we look at the curve of the deck, the 4 drop slot is very low on cards and adding more 1 and 3-drops lets us more often play 1+3 Mana cards on turn 4.
All in all I edited the deck quite a bit and found it way more consistent. Synergy is key to every deck and even more so to Quest Warlock. Really, give it a try, I think I'm closer to the Deck they tested at Blizzard than ever before!
Some things to note:
1) You can play Howlfiend into an enemy Volcano. You will not discard your quest reward since Volcano still counts as one damage source.
2) Never tap if you are ahead on the board. You want to play your Discard Demons without penalty.
3) Targeting Howlfiend with Dark Possession does not discard the Discovered card since the effect triggers before the card will be added to your hand.
4) Never ever play Cataclysm on curve. Most of the time your enemy will have initiative if you do. But with the deck built like this you will mostly never have to. If you face aggro though, it's still better to play all your big Taunt minions. The only deck where you can play Cataclysm on curve is Quest Priest or any deck where you know Turn 4-5 of your opponent will not be strong enough to overwhelm you.
Blood-Queen Lana'thel is a 1/6 minion + any discarded cards. If you have a 7/6 Blood-Queen on the board and Void Ripper hits, she becomes a 12/7 Lifesteal minion and can easily finish off your opponent.
Heyho Warlock players! **UPDATED**

3) or simply to have a spare card to discard. Since it's never a minion but a spell discarding useless and cheap spells doesn't interfere with Cruel Dinomancers plans either.

Synergy with Nether Portal, Despicable Dreadlord and The Lich King.

I tried having fun once. It was awful.
Yep, Nat doesn't belong here. In fact I'd drop almost all the legendaries you have there, except Zavas and Deathwing.
I think the problem with your deck is that you focus too much on the discard cards and don’t have any removal. Control warlock is normally quite strong against aggro, so I think it’s best if you have half your deck devote to aoe such as hellfire, defile, twisting etc and the other half for the discard theme card

Playing Hearthstone since Oct 2015. Favourite class: Warlock.
Aaaand I have 99 skills, but the english language ain't one. :D
But why exactly is Cataclysm bad in a Mid-Range deck like this ? With all the Deathrattles and sticky minions I thought it would fit perfectly.
I'm thinking about switching Nat Pagle with Bloodbloom. Actually it helps playing Cataclysm earlier, it's good with Nether Portal and Unwilling Sacrifice too. What do you think ?
*UPDATE* Removed most of the too slow Deathrattle cards and replaced them with more tempo cards like Howlfiend and Rattling Rascal combined with Treachery. It works way better now.
**BIG UPDATE**
For anyone interested to build a Quest Control Warlock deck - I updated the thread completely. Have fun! :)
Another big Update for Witchwood. Hope you enjoy!
Both, Drakkari Enchanter and Despicable Dreadlord have ongoing effects (which means they synergize with Cruel Dinomancer) and force removal since people are afraid of the Despicable Dreadlord combo (especially aggro decks).
So I made the following Changes:
- Lord Jaraxxus (I felt like 3 pot. win conditions are enough)
- 2x Tar Lurker
- 2x Doomsayer
+ The Lich King
+ 2xDespicable Dreadlord
+ 2x Drakkari Enchanter
Yes, I'm trying really hard, but it looks promising :D
And summoning 4 Nether Imps with Drakkari Enchanter is just awesome!
Now that we have The Soularium my initial thoughts that Discard Quest Warlock was meant to work with End of Turn cards may not be that far off. :P
What do you think: Will Discard Warlock with
and maybe some more Discard Support be viable this expansion ?
It works with a just drawn Clutchmother Zavas and Drakkari Enchanter on the board.

Wild is easy. But Standard ? :)
I gave it a shot, what do you think?

A new update for Boomsday! I changed the deck to be much more aggressive and added some new cards (The Soularium, Dr. Morrigan)
So if you were so "unlucky" to get Dr. Morrigan from the first packs maybe you want to give this deck a try. :)
Alright fellow Warlock Players. After lots and lots of playing the last days I went more and more aggressive with the deck, trying to remove unnecessary cards to replace them with more suitable ones that push the Discard Quest further.

5) Play The Soularium only if you have at least one more mana to spend. We have Kobold Librarian and Dark Possession as well as Soulfire in our deck and we need the value of those.
Have fun playing! Oh and we have another new card in here: Azalina Soulthief. Turns out she was made for this archetype specifically.
oh and for extra lols you can try Blood-Queen Lana'thel with:
Blood-Queen Lana'thel is a 1/6 minion + any discarded cards. If you have a 7/6 Blood-Queen on the board and Void Ripper hits, she becomes a 12/7 Lifesteal minion and can easily finish off your opponent.
Just won two games because of a buffed Blood-Queen Lana'thel. Just switch out a Chittering Tunneler or a Tar Creeper with one Void Ripper. Also works surprisingly well with Howlfiend and Lakkari Felhound for extra face damage.
*UPDATE* Swapped out all defensive cards (Tar Creeper, Tar Lurker) with more anti-Control oriented cards, basically the End-of-Turn package I tried before. Which is Drakkari Enchanter, The Lich King and Despicable Dreadlord. Now it's a true anti-control deck.
