Just got to rank 5 the other day with a combination of Midrange Hunter, Dragon Tempo Warrior and N'Zoth Priest this month. Played N'Zoth Priest for the majority of the month to 10, then played Dragon Warrior (not too much success though) and then just grinded Hunter until I hit 5. When you're playing different decks, make sure you remember that at the end of the day, the winner is the person who drops to zero first (and stays at zero). A lot of my friends play for value too much even if they're playing an Aggro deck
Laddering is super luck oriented I feel since some match ups feel virtually impossible to win sometimes. Just keep cueing with decks (try and use only one deck per session though so you don't confuse yourself) you feel comfortable playing and eventually you'll get a string of good match ups and you just ride the momentum. Also really helps to ladder with someone ghosting you (I had a good irl friend with me most of the time) and also important not to get too emotionally invested if you get lucked. If you feel like you're getting lucked, take a break and come back. Probably the most important thing (which is also why having a friend helps a ton too) because your plays can get pretty darn sloppy if you're in a bad.
I just dropped from rank 5 to rank 8, but then switched from normal miracle rogue to n'zoth miracle rogue and shot back up to 5, not losing a single game.
the thing is that it depends on the moments within the month....first and last weeks of the season you're going to face aggro 80% of the time, this is the reason why i would suggest tempo warr or totem shaman. That said i usually play aggro shaman to rank up till 8/10 then i use mainly mid range hunter or miracle rogue for the rest of the season, it also depends on how much time do you have...playing Miracle puts me in the position of having medium long games....aggro shamans matches usually end on turn 6.
I got to 5 with Tempo Warrior I think, then I switched to Miracle Rogue, because I was lack like 100 games to golden portrait, didn't know how to play it well, droped to rank 10! and climbed back to 4 with it. Also tried Midrange Hunter or Cthun Warrior when bored, quiet good. There are a lot of decks in this meta you can climb to 5 IMO.
Play Retard Shaman deck, no need to think just click on cards that the little number on top left equals or is less than your shiny blue gems count at the bottom of the screen and you win.
In general I recommend either playing lots of arena to get the cards you need, or playing any cheap list enough to get comfortable with it. Even mediocre decks can get to 5 if you play them well.
I played N'Zoth paladin to rank 4. pretty standard list but i added a refreshment vendor and tuskarr jouster minutes 1 forbidden healing and something else, can't remember.
If you feel like playing control it is pretty strong against shaman and zoo, even against warrior but weak to miracle, hunter and priest. Up to rank 5 tho is mostly grazing on shaman and zoo.

I got to 5 with my own C'thun Druid and Cipher's Zoolock. Protip Black Knight is amazing in this meta.
get good... ;)
shaman/zoo/facehunter if you can't take those to rank5 you're probably not getting to rank5
I just hit rank 5 with the deck in my signature (Dragon N'Zoth Pally) and I've been having a fun time with it.

12 wins in ArenA with: Mage and Paladin, first time legend with Rogue
Though I actually hit rank5 right now with this self-made, so-much-fun deck: http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/467321-standard-yshaarj

I hit rank 4 with Totem Shaman in less than 100 games from rank 25.
Started playing less than a month ago.

So with a bit of perseverance and a can of KickStart, I GOT TO RANK 5! Midrange hunter(custom) got me there :)

Blizzard cares for the mentally impaired.
is it really u all juz use a class and concentrate on ladder ?
You have two paths:
With money: buy a shit ton of packs and build something decent.
No money:
a) play arena till you are able to make at least a decent deck.
b) play aggro/zoo/midrange hunter or shaman (cheap and effective decks).
that's pretty much it.
I played a control shaman list to rank 5 this season, there's a full guide on the deck page if you are interested.
In general I recommend either playing lots of arena to get the cards you need, or playing any cheap list enough to get comfortable with it. Even mediocre decks can get to 5 if you play them well.

Played otk warrior from 16 to 4 in 2 days with 4 losses in all - 2 of which were due to my own dumb misplace.
