Before I continue, I fully agree with DiamondDM13 especially about the part of how the quantity of the won games outweighs their quality. How playing a 20- or a 30-minute game and earning a single star (respectfully the other player losses it), while for the same time an aggro player grinds 3 or 4 games, feels super unfair. The reward system is really one-sided - in favour for the fast wins - and this needs to change. I don't think, that people will start playing slow decks THAT MUCH, they would consider how competitive (strong) the particular slow deck really is, in order to decide if it's worth to play longer games or not.
Now back to the thread - Lyra Belacqua, do you mean the current K&C ladder experience or ranked in general? If it's the first one - I'm a standard player and I really enjoy this format. Although I despise the cheat mechanics, which have been implemented in many popular decks for quite some time now (Barnes+ Y'Shaarj or other big minions; lackey into a cube, into 2 voidlords; spiteful into a 12/12 on turn 6), I still like the fact how those decks are counterable and interactive, how you can stop what they are trying to accomplish and not being pressured by the time. Because I have met many annoying decks over the course of my short ladder experience and losing to them felt really bad, either because how aggressive those decks were or because of certain combos they managed to pull off, which I couldn't stop - Pirate Warrior (ending games on turn 4), Jade Dudu (before Skulking Geist), pre-nerfed QR, Quest Mage (when it pulls freeze spells and Ice Blocks out of their ass).
If the OP talks in general - well, duh, people will play those decks, which have a solid build and thus can grant safe wins. The higher on the ladder lesser the variety, because you aim to play less risky decks. At best aggro, because if you lose a game, you can quickly recover from it.
Not really. As DiamondDM13 already mentioned, the fact I can play a 30-minute long control game (not exaggretating, happened quite a few times) with both players fully focusing and thinking about every single choice twice which I end up winning deep in fatigue is completely worthless since I get trashed by an aggro pally or secret mage by turn 5 just because they were luckier than I was makes me hate the whole thing. This month I decided to try to get to Legend, I'm at rank 2 now, but regardless of the end result, I already know I won't try again. Other than that, rank 5 shouldn't be too much of a problem given enough time even with fun decks, but that's a different story.
Not a big fan of wild cause the decks that are good are so much better than anything else it feels impossible to innovate or try anything new cause you just get curbstomped.

So not true... you just need decent deck building skills... look at some stremers (like Brian Kibler for example). They play fun decks, but they know which techs they should include and never go 100% memes... you usually need 70% meme and 30% counter the meta in your meme decks...

The question was just for ranked in general, but it was the constant Big Priests and Kingsbane Rogues in this K&C meta in wild that got me thinking about ladder.
I do like what posters here have said, that even against meta decks it can be fun to challenge yourself by pitting off-meta decks against them because of how it makes the wins more enjoyable. However, I think some days even that wears off and even with decks that are more unique and/or challenging it still gets boring to fall into the routine of predictable games since you know which decks you are going to be matched up at least 3/4 of the time.

You know, Lyra, you mustn't expect others to entertain you. Everyone has their own rights to play the decks they like the most.
For an example my most favourite one is control warlock. Even though some can take it as a meta one, I don't really care about their opinion, because all it matters is how I feel about it. And I enjoy it and all of its aspects - the play-style, the demon synergy, the defile board clears, even the purple frames on my cards. I just don't mind facing the same decks over and over again, because the same way control warlock is interesting to me, so can be Big Priest or Kingsbane Rogue for others. And like I said before, people want to play more solid builds the higher on the ladder. So things like a monotonousness have to be expected.
That's why the other users advised you to play off-meta decks, in order to make the ladder experience more enjoyable for yourself. Because this is actually the only thing, which is in your control to change. If you want to see a bigger deck variety on the ladder, then wait for the next expansion to be launched, as the old decks will vanish and people will constantly experiment with new cards.
inb4 if you feel like the game becomes boring to you at one point, then take a break. Sometimes I also feel like I have played so much, that everything became a routine to me.
I always struggle answering this question. I've been playing since beginning and this is what I've noticed: After an expansion there is about 4 months till the next one comes out. So I am always very excited after an expansion and try to play all kinds of own made decks in wild. After a month or 2 I always get a bit frustrated about how certain decks take over the meta and it makes me sick playing against the same deck over and over again. From there on it's a struggle from day to day until the next expansion for me and I find myself in play mode/arena/tavern brawls etc. more than usually.
I can't agree more. Focus more on what you're playing and less on what the opponent is playing. Every single matchup in the game plays out slightly differently. It's an adventure and learning experience to master each one. The important part is that it takes two decks to make a matchup: the opponent and yours. If you're tired of one specific match, just change your deck and you can learn a new one all over again
Another thing is to not let the community hivemind predefine your enjoyment level. How much you enjoy a deck should depend entirely on you. Just because everyone else is saying some decks are not "fun", doesn't mean it won't be for you. Try out everything your collection allows. Maybe you'll find "the one" or something close. I've been playing jade druid since it was a garbage T3 deck getting beat on by Small-Time Buccaneer back in MSG. I'm clearly not playing it just to win; I play it because I like out valuing everyone with big green dudes and making important choose one decisions
I've pretty much been seeing 3 decks ALL the time in Standard, dude pally, control/cube lock and Spiteful Priest. Those 3 decks make up 80% of the meta for me. So yeah it's boring as all hell. I wanna grind to legend but I get SO bored played 37,000 straight matches against cubelock that I usually end up finishing my daily quest and log off.
Ranked is a bad, unpaid burger-flipping job in higher ranks (fine in lower ranks.) "Focus just on my deck," you say? That's actually the other half of the problem, if you want to keep climbing, you have to stick with one or at most two decks and get to know them very well. If you like ranked, get a job. You'll like that even more! And they pay you, not the other way 'round!
i like "mastering" the new meta after an expansion and go for legend every now and then. when we're 2-3 month into the expansion i just get 5 asap and play arena for the rest of the time because its more diverse and used to be more skill heavy to an extent - until recently when they updated the drafting at least haha
I do actually have more fun playing meta vs meta haha. It can be frustrating losing to someone who draws the nuts in their very off-meta deck that really shouldn't be that competitive (I know, I know, you can argue that they're a "better" player than me, but whatever).
People complain about meta all the time, but I at least like knowing what I'm going up against. Even if I know that I'm going to face 16 voidlords throughout the game, or 4 duskbreakers haha, or whatever else. You can really test your skill better, in my opinion, knowing when to play around control cards, and when to use your own control cards.

I have fun when I'm either meming or climbing. If I'm just playing to finish quests, not so much.
For climbing, I pick whichever class I want to play, and just try to play X number of games per day. Doesn't matter if I win or lose, just play the game as best I can. If I can squeeze in 3-5 ranked games per day over the month this way, I usually end up in the 11-13 range, sometimes as low as 10. We'll see if that holds up with the new ladder formats.
For meming, I make off-meta decks that I never see anybody play and try them. I usually do this once I hit 15. Last month I played a mill shaman that won about 40%. This month I'm playing a totem shaman that I think might actually be a legit deck. I need to tweak it some more but I've had some really good luck with it, using cards I've never once see anybody else play. I advanced from 15 to 14 with it (only to fall back again), and it's really fun to play because nobody know WTF to expect. I get a lot of "well playeds" and people friending me after to ask for the deck list.
What's NOT fun is just trying to get quests done where I just need to win games. Then winning DOES matter and losing is frustrating. I usually finish those in casual mode, but doing them on ladder is miserable.
I play enough to get the card back and that's about it. Even in the extremely short time I've played the game I've found that I don't particularly enjoy a grind for little to no reward; if I want any substantial reward I would have to grind up about 20 ranks; if I win every single game (which is unlikely) I would have to keep a streak for about fifty games, if my understanding of winstreak stars is correct (I'd imagine it isn't). Ultimately, if I wanted dust I'd just buy a bunch of packs instead.
Ranked is really fun for me like the first month and a half after a new expansion. After that, not so much. I didn't play a single game last season for instance.
The good thing about the new ranked system its that you dont had to grind that hard, and the new user experience its better, the problem its that once you achieved a high rank ,5 or best, you are trapped to play against meta ,decks forever. ( And ever, ever ever ever...) So once you got the 5 wins you can start playing fun decks on casual. So for now im just playing less since we are on the pre expansion stagment.

wait... if you don't rank up at all you should still drop right? just not so much as before? so when youre legend one season and get dropped to 4 and don't play in the following season you gonna loose another 4 right?

Like every month, i set my goal for standard and i play it until i reach this goal. (This month rank 2)
When i finish my goal, i start to play wild ladder with some homebrews.
I only play casual (standard and wild), if i want to test a new deck or for some unlucky quests (play pirates, warrior wins etc.)
And es long i have my goal insight i have fun in standard. Else wild makes more fun.

As long as I don't get matched against any type of control warlock, or "big" deck (big priest being the most annoying), I have fun.
