So I'm writing this because I found myself being EXTREMELY upset, you might even say butthurt, about the new "Hunter" legendary Emeriss.
Now, I have no real problem with the card itself. The effect is interesting, the artwork is cool. My problem is WHY HUNTER?
This card makes so little sense in Hunter, it's genuinely puzzeling. It does not work with any currently existing Hunter cards (and no, I won't consider KIng Krush because that guy was literally unplayable until recently when we got a way to oactually get him on the board WITHOUT having to play him). So here we have a card for "Control Hunter", a deck that so far has never been shown to work unless you count Kathrena Winterwisp and Deathstalker Rexxar as control cards (which they aren't, they're just Plan B in case smashing face doesn't work).
So here we have a 10-mana 8/8 that does NOTHING the turn it is played. For reference, here are two similar cards that never saw actual play (unless you were able to cheat them out or jsut received them through random effects): Tyrantus and Deathwing, Dragonlord. These two cards, while powerful, were rarely ever considered, simply because the turn they are played they usually have no impact at all.
Now, some classes can get away with it, either because tehy get to stack armor or can effectively deal with threats until they get to that point. Hunter does neither.
On top of that, this card benefits two scenarios: Either you want to combo it with a big Charge Minion or some medium-sized ones with powerful stats OR you just want to use it with a big hand size and pump out roided up minions for the next few turns. However, as we all know, Hunter DOES NOT do either of these well. They have no unconditional draw, so combo is out of the question and they usually don't keep a big handsize very long.
Now, of course, they have a good amount of minion generating effects like Stampede or just Deathstalker Rexxar but even if you got a huge hand of minions...they will be mostly random and you still need to play a clunky 10-drop and get away with it.
Now ALL OF THIS is not what upsets me. We had bad legendaries before. We even had good legendaries before, that just didn't work out after all (Swamp King Dred comes to mind). What is really infuriating is that this could...no...SHOULD have been a Druid card.
Think about it: Big green dragon who's a subordinate to Ysera, a character with strong connections to the Druid class in Warcraft lore. 10-mana minion that would be clunky by itself but works really well with ramping effects as well as the Druid Quest. Plenty of Big Minions that really benefit from doubled stats. Hell, Druid class identity actually IS about big minions.
So what do we have at the end? A big legendary with a powerful effect shoved into a class that can barely do anything with it, while there is another class that could use it a lot more, while ALSO having a better thematic connection. It's just baffling how poorly this fits into the overall picture. Why did it need to be Emeriss of all possible choices? You could slap this effect onto literally any character. A beast, a Hunter, ANYTHING that fits with the class better than a random DRAGON.
Either way, I'm still secretly hoping that someone at Blizzard just smoked too much meth and mixed up the Druid and Hunter legendaries and all of this was just a silly misunderstanding.
This is the first xpac of the rotation and we haven't even seen half the cards of witchwood yet.. It will still probably remain a meme card but we never know.
As for Druid, god knows what kind of shit it could've pulled in wild with this + Aviana, it would have been beyond broken
Deathstalker Rexxar would be broken in literally any class other than Hunter. I suspect the same is for Emeriss. Hunter's control tools are so crappy that they can get away with having busted high-cost cards.
Im generaly fine with discovering new things for classes and not recycle the same mechanics in every class 100 times. Its something good because its something new in my opinion.
I also dont see why Dragons Fit thematically more in druid than in hunter. What exactly have Priests to do with Dragons lorewise?! Is that a problem?! No. There is no "Lorewise highground" in this game its a card game in WOW. It has nothing to do with the actual lore.
Maybe some lone traveler was hunted by Emeriss through Feralas and he escaped to tell his story so they made this card?! Who cares?!
What "Hunter can do" with this card is only a question of how much support there is. Scaleworm is already a card. Lets wait for whats comming.
Blizzard is forced to print filler class legendaries now they they're doing 2 per class. There have been neutral fillers since day one tho, so none of this is really concerning to me. If anything, forced must-craft legendaries are way more of a problem.
Which is why it is in Hunter. This is a fun card that has some niche or fringe potential in certain metas or if hunter gets a bit more removal. In Druid, it pushes a year of the mamoth style of deck and would help push out a lot of control/midrange styles that Blizzard is pursuing with this set.
It would have been pretty disgusting in druid honestly. Although it could have made the whole "treants in hand" actually almost viable haha.
Giving it to a class that's all about hand synergy (just going by the way they're pushing druid) would be unbelievably broken. Giving them to a class with maybe a little bit of potential to go a control route is probably the right thing to do. Of course, the card might just not see play. But then it again, it could also be broken. Giving it to hunter, unfortunately, was the correct "balanced" thing to do.
Edit: If you would have said the Emeriss and Darius Crowley effects were reversed (I don't know much about lore or whatever), I feel like that would be better in each other's "identities". I feel like Darius could see play in hunter decks, to help keep board control as a tempo play with the beasts n all, and Emeriss could make warrior pretty scary. But I donno. I know nothing about balancing games lol.
Triggered you so hard you couldn’t post in the dedicated Emeriss forum. Quick response, it would be broken as shit for Druid. Mana acceleration+card draw+this is not healthy.
I see it like this, surprising she's not a Druid legendary, but with that effect i'm happy she didn't take a spot in Druid and made some room for cooler more interesting cards
The problem is that the majority of the community is brainwashed into thinking there is only ONE way to play hunter. Smorc dorks. Be willing to try something new. EVERYONE BITCHED about spell hunter, guess what!?!?! ITS FUN! Maybe give control hunter a chance?
I think this Card was specifically designed for decks build around Kathrena Winterwisp. You usually want to pull a hudge charging beast from your deck with Kathrena but what happens when you draw your King Krush, before turn 8? Now you have the backup plan of buffing those hudge chargers in your hand with Emeriss to make them viable again. So Emriss was basically added to hunter, to make Kathrena Winterwisp decks more consistent, which is a good thing in my opinion.

that is actually one of the most sensible things to do with this card. I didn't even consider that.

Are you kidding me? This card would have been WAY to OP in Druid.

Your inability to see potential and lack of creativity is beyond obvious.
