I am curious which class you guys think will be hardest hit with the rotation of the standard/basic classes.
Below I have listed the classes, and the cards that either see the most play, or the cards that in my opinion give the class a unique identity. This isn't the full list of cards, however many of the cards leaving don't see play at all.
For me I think in particular Hunter, Mage Rogue, Warrior and arguably Druid are the most affected, but if I had to choose 1, I would say mage. The loss of most of their freezing effects and Sorcerer's Apprentice is a big loss.
Mage and its not really close. Hunter lost some good smorc cards but they will be fine for several reasons. Mage is losing most of the identity it has built over all these years.
Sorcerer's apprentice rotation is long overdue. Aside from that, maybe polymorph and blizzard are truly impactful ?
The loss of frostbolt is way overrated and the other rotating cards are whatever. Mage identity is just fine.
Rogue lost literally everything with sap and eviscerate, they better print replacements for those cards. Rotating vanish was already too much for my taste, but now sap.. They really hate control rogue don't they ?
Warrior losing shield block and battle rage is way overrated too, it's just card draw.
Druid lost a fair bit of class identity but they are clearly moving away from druid having removals, I don't care, druid has other strengths are those aren't impacted.
Shaman losing earth shock and bloodlust is actually a huge deal, they are not the most iconic nor the most used cards but they are some of the most important shaman cards regardless.
And hunter of course lost its aggro core so it's a pretty big deal too. They seem to be transitioning the hunter core set from pure aggro to more midrange style.
Demon hunter doesn't care about losing 2 decent cards, they only have good cards. Well, maybe not anymore, after so many waves of nerfs. The community killed Demon Hunter, whatever.
Paladin, warlock and priest lose nothing, they only got strictly better. I guess priest lost inner fire and mass dispel. But Paladin and warlock are the winners by far.
So to me it's Hunter, Rogue, Shaman and Mage, in that order. Warrior and druid will be fine. Demon hunter... Well, if it's any good, the community will call for another wave of nerf, this class is dead.
Mage is losing a lot of cards that have appeared in its control decks over the years, particularly Frost Nova and Blizzard. Rogue is also losing some cards that have appeared in pretty much every playable rogue deck since inception. Those two classes are the hardest hit.
As a mage player, I'm curious what the future is going to be like for the class. What possible identity or archetypes develop. Together with the rotation, control might be even more difficult to work with. No freeze - can't slow aggro, even harmless mirror image got gutted, no damage from hand - can't burn opponent, no poly - can't neutralize giant minions or powerful deathrattles. Unless we get some op chonky class minions or summon x/y x-times I don't quite see how can a mage compete the board and push dmg to face eventually . For some of the tier 1 classes this is in fact a buff - by removing the few tools that could actually harm them (especially if they lose bad/mediocre cards that see very little play) . Notice how classes lost their silence/poly/dispel effects? Blessing of Authority and Argent Braggart are probably having a party right now. I'm excited about the expansion and the changes it brings but so far there are clear winners and those who got fcked hard.
Can't wait for the new cards to be out. For now, let's pray for a good rng with devolving missiles.
Mage or Hunter probably LOST the most, mostly because like... mage didn't really have any particularly bad cards in it's basic/classic set. Hunter got hit slightly worse but still lost a lot of the direct damage tools it relies on.
Having said that, there's lots of current mage/hunter decks that are powerful, are surviving the rotation, and don't rely on the classic/basic set very much at all.
Also in terms of overall power, I think the druid core set is the weakest by far. There's some neat cards in there, but most of it's either redundant or just serves very little purpose. It's also like... I don't know what it could add beyond what exists in the Year of the Phoenix already.
Druid has some cool beast synergy stuff, but Druid of the Claw isn't a beast in your deck. Innervate is kinda neat, but either compounds with Blossom too much to create this weird critical mass of free mana in one turn, or it just feels weaker. Enchanted Raven is super boring and Phoenix has way more interesting one drops, Mark of the Wild still seems bad, I feel like Druid has enough treant generation without Force of Nature & Landscaping. Wild Growth is just worse than Overgrowth and feels redundant. Nourish is REALLY weak, and just seems outclassed by other drawing options. But might see play if there's literally no other top-end card draw. 6 mana is really weak just to draw 3 cards, though. Feels like that could have been bumped up to 4. And then Cenarius's treant-summoning effect is SO weak. Especially for an 8 drop. The board buff is good, but I feel like the treant effect could have summoned 4 treants, or maybe given them rush or something.
Again, I don't think it's weak necessarily, it's just SO anemic.
I chose priest I would like to point out that. Priest went through an class change. And that was aimed to healing. And now with the new changes priest is being pulled to everywhere. Control? Not as much anymore. Aggro? Sorry it doesn't work. Midrange? Not enough card draw. Value generation? Maybe. Thief priest sorry removing staple cards. I don't see an new player being able to play it with the new core. I do love priest but I do believe that it's worrying. But hopefully when more cards are revealed in barens we get to see how they are aiming this but I do belive that the core. Should be a core and not all over the place. Anyway I'm sorry for the Inconvenience and the Ranting but I do believe that many have an core that is bit lacking. I just believe priest is being unfairly treated by the community because people are tired of ressurect and the value generation that are mostly rotating out
Both Mage and Hunter lose a lot of core identity cards.
But I think the decision between the two comes down to Hunter because Mage is overall a much more versatile class and can adapt to different playstyles much more easily with its Hero Power and set. Hunter however is permanently keyed into being a smorc class and the loss of some of its key control and combo cards such as the bow and especially key cards like Kill Command and Animal Companion will "hit it very hard" to coin a phrase.
My thoughts were on hunter for losing the face factor, that has been carrying for the class since Naxx more or less. Druid losing savage roar is a pretty huge nerf to the treant decks, that otherwise seems very encouraged in the core set and not having wrath and swipe is a big nerf to all ramp and slow druid decks (Druid would be my other pick).
But we're talking mage now. I actually thought that the class was better off than most, just by looking at the wholeness of the set, but when you look at the powerful cards that have gone, it really made me think. If you just look at what is gone, sure mage is getting butchered, but that's because the class has gotten more wild cards in their set than most. They also have some solid card buffs. Sure cone of cold sucked, but now it can be used like a less situational and less tilting frost nova. The secrets are the most solid classic ones and the class has more value generation + draw now than before. ALL classes have significantly fewer cards now, but mage has a pretty solid secret package and can still do lots of early game trades with the star spell and the new blue gill warrior + boar. Polymorph gone is pretty big. That card allowed mage to counter a lot of shit, but was getting less relevant with time.
Impact cant be determined yet. The new content isnt available yet.
This is true, but we can still ponder the changes based on the information we have to hand. There's certainly no harm in that. We can't just make sweeping about the future meta. But this thread is mainly asking which class has been hit hardest "on the face of it" from the loss of the above cards.
Mage and Priest because they lost almost all good tools. I cant even play my thief priest anymore! Mage at least has a functioning secret deck but priest is left with what? "Buff health" and "a few dragons"? Nothing that would make a good deck currently. They better have some really deck defining cards for priest... I am worried that they go with the shadow priest theme that is more a combo/ aggro version... I can stand those decks.

Demon Hunter initiate set rotates as well, I believe. So, Twin Slice, Altruis the Outcast, Mana Burn, Consume Magic just to name a few...
A few initiate cards were moved into the Core Set, but not all.

I just noticed that I put mage twice in the poll options, my bad
Can you put an: “idk because the first expansion hasn’t come out yet and it’s too early to tell” option?

True. But what will the Barens bring
double mage? aight
