Tempo mage was the first deck I ever got into in hearthstone once I learned the game. Seeing it come back into the meta was a nice little nostalgia boost. Unfortunately the deck is a total rng fest now and it's kinda disappointing. I don't mind a little RNG but it seems like they've made it the mage class identity now and winning just feels really dirty at times. I just want some more clear cut good cards to work with and not just mass random resource generation. Anyone else feel this way or is it just me?
You're not alone. I never liked the random card generation the class started getting, and now, I don't even see the point of printing Mage cards considering all they do is print cards that generate random other cards. Eventually it's a bunch of cheap spells that continually generate the Classic spells.
It really suck to see my favorite class be completely ruined and what is worse, is that this stupid design philosophy is causing nerfs to old cards that were fun to play with but now, due to all the cheap random generation, became so much easier to abuse.
They keep designing the same shitty card effects, and it's Open the Waygate and Sorcerer's Apprentice that get nerfed.
Yeah they totally killed the class by nerfing Mana wyrm, and for what? Took forever for the class to recover from that. Lab partner is an okay replacement with something like cram session, but the deck relies so heavily on Evocation and Mana cyclone it's not even funny. Discover mechanics are okay in small doses to round out a deck but if the deck runs completely on resource generation that says a lot for the state of the class in general.
tempo mage deck with those mana cyclone and evocation shenanigans is my fav deck atm. so no big deal with those rng. it brings tons of fun.
I liked the freeze mage that was good for a bit. Much less RNG focus and more on strategy. Unfortunately it just got really easy to counter play. To each their own I suppose, I just don't feel right when I win purely because I generated the right card, unless my opponent is doing the same thing. Honestly quest druid is more fun to me, just less competitive.
I created a Highlander Mage with less RNG-Cards. Maybe it´s interesting for you. (Reno is for bord clear agains druids. But you can replace if you dont like him).
My favourite deck of all time was Big Spell Mage with Death Knight Jaina.
I feel like they've totally moved away from Mage having a control based archetype and although I have no issue with RNG and card discover effects/generation I'd love more control tools and a better late game win condition.
Saying that, Turtle and Highlander do add some variety and are fairly competitive so the class is in a much better place than Shaman!
They deliberately killed this class because of news cards the devs created in the latest expansions and now they are out of ideas for mage...they suck!
it seems the problem is linked to a steep mana curve in deck biased to 1-3 mana. So I would not put more than six 5+ mana cards in my deck. If I dare to do so, I simply get many dead draws before turn 5, and lose painfully with < 50% WR.
My interpretation is, the Dev tries to solve this problem by fitting RNG generation at 1-2 mana card. In this way, I can access big cards without putting biggies in my deck. Now I have 22+ <3mana cards and no worry about dead draw. Mage is a class you typically see this happening. Other classes card also have such designs. Highlander decks tend to be free from this condition, it is unique in mana curve and card power.
However I think this is a bad solution. Any win will depend on strong RNG factor. This reflects the mulligan process is faulty and need redesign. Fixing this will improve the deck mana curve and cure the 22+ <3mana deck problem.
Just google DOPAMINE and you'll understand why there are so many "rng" cards or "highroll" potential in this game. Today it's a Mage class, tomorrow will be some other, but it will never stop. They say that these highrolls and rng cards create cool and unpredictable situations and game swings, but in reality they are here to create addiction which means more money for the proprietor. It's the basic principle on which casinos all over the world operate.
Just watch some competitive Hearthstone streamers playing these type of decks every day and you'll see how happy they are when they get "lucky" or "highroll" and how sad and disappointed they feel when they don't. This kinda emotional rollercoaster inevitably leads to depression, so if you're playing Hearthstone for many hours every day, it would be smart to stay away from these type of decks as much as possible.
Mage is the most unfun class to play against, worst than Priest, and thats even when im favorable. All that shit people say about Hearthstone being a braindead low-skill clownfiesta? I cant talk back if they mention Mage, it is EVERYTHING wrong about the game in a single class.
They had it well in classic with Antonidas creating not random but stable Fireballs now Mage needs a version that creates Frostbolts then a version that creates Mirror Images and so on.Less random more consistent spell generation.
The whole HS is a casino at this point, there is SO MUCH RNG that I simply cannot play it anymore. I haven't for a year now or so, I just play BGS and do my dailies to have packs, that's it. I'm pretty sure there are many people on the same boat as me.
I don't mind random. I love it infact because it can have some cool outcomes. But Mage has gotten far too much of it. And that just leads to inconsistency.
Blizz should change how 'discover' works. When your opponent activates the effect, you should be able to see what options they have available, but not what option they chose. That way you can have some level of prediction, but still don't know for sure.
It's kind of against the rule of no interaction during the opponent's turn, but it's also the best way to deal with this rng problem.
Yeah I hate how RNG the mage class has become. I remember when Reno's hero power got finally revealed, biggest disappointment ever. The first few expansion it had always been the control/no random bs class.
Warlock has taken it's place though now if you like that and it's the class I've been playing most. Pretty much no discover random stuff.

It started already a long time ago, but now they seem to have gone even more all in on those random spells and minions.
I do not like it either, and Evolve mechanics are just as bad imo.

What you call casino, I call skillrape. And still there are types to defend HS-card design as god ridden.

HS makes you realize once again that all people are equal, but some are more equal than others.
