If your're somewhat confident Arena has the most value for you gold. If you're not...still pick arena and learn to get better in this play mode. It's lucrative for f2p players
if you get at least 4 wins per Arena run, your are making a profit. You will get the free pack plus gold/dust. Usually end up ahead like 40 dust or gold, which both help in building your collection. A suggestion that was given to me when i started was, save up around 2000 gold and then start playing arena. I try and do 1 run a day if i can. Sometimes i get only 1 or 3 wins, but alot of 6-8 wins too!! It averages out in the end. Still making a profit which is great way to get those cards! Good luck.
Arena 100%. Do your homework beforehand, watch someone good play (who regularly can get 7+ wins), and go for it yourself. Sometimes the draft is naff, and you have to try and scrape to 3 to get something decent out of it, but that'll only make you better as a player. I've had some really good days when I had a bunch of spare time where I came out with 4-5 packs, a load of dust and a net positive of 4-500 gold. I even played arena for the whole of last month and pretty much completed my WW collection with all the cards I wanted, bar 1 or 2 legendaries which I'll craft with dust anyway. The rest of the xpac is now all about saving for the release of the next one.

I wasn't planning on going for a run today. But those cops came out of nowhere.
If you get 7+ wins, your entire arena is refunded (confirmed 150+ gold reward). So, if you’re lucky enough, you can essentially farm the arena for packs and gold. I managed to farm over 3000+ gold from KnC and had plenty of spare dust (4000+) to spend afterwards.
You should probably do packs if you are after something, free to play and not really good at the game. Alot of people will disagree with me but each win someone has someone loses which means most players mathematically will not get over 3 wins per run. You break even 3 to 4 wins range, so unless you are better than average you are better off buying packs. I know most who actively comment in here are above average to legend skill level but unless you are that level only play arena for the fun of it and not to min max your gold. If you have everything you want you should hoard gold for next expansion.

Thing is, just being willing to send any post on a forum like this already puts you far and above the average player. MOST players don't even look up any information on how to play. It's hard to get a feel for that since we're all isolated without this bubble, so it's easy to think that most people play like we do. But even with the statistics, we can have every single person on hearthpwn, including first time posters and lurkers, max out on 7 wins and we'll have far FAR more than enough remaining arena players to take up the remaining losses.
So even if you want to think of it as a zero sum game, there's still enough slots for every person here to be an effective arena player. Simply being in a position to read this thread means the odds are for you especially since we're talkinga bout the first 3 games which EVERYONE participates in.
That said you do have one major point, if you aren't clocking an average of 3 wins a match (pulling real stats is best but, honestly, if you are at the point where you think you can get it, you qualify here) then your best bet is to pull pure packs.
But if you CAN hit 3 wins on average (which, again, is about a 50/50 for the average player) then arena is actually better than packs, to the point where you shouldn't buy a pack at all if you have no problems spamming arena all day. At 3 wins you'll very slightly get packs for slightly less than 100 gold (note that dust is about the same value as gold, so those '50 dust + pack' count). Anything past that makes arena even more profitable compared to pack opening.
So if you are VERY new, you might want to stick to packs mostly but you DO want to practice in arena. If you are f2P Arena is an absolute MUST for collection gathering.

Few people are honest about how well they play. If you are winning 3 or less consistently in Arena, its better to buy packs as you have suggested. There is no big loss in trying though, but if after 4 or 5 runs your consistently losing, go back to playing other modes to get experience before going back to the arena.
Also,i'm playing this game since Beta (Got the key),and i can reach high ranks in HS,but after some time that became boring...so i decided to climb another account (Currently Rank 7 on that account).
Playing ranked over and over,is uninteresting so i want to try arena (I did play arena when it was free2play,i think i had 3-5 wins).
My decks are Even Shaman,Tempo Mage,Odd,Secret,Aggro,Murloc,Devine Shield,OTK Paladin...i want more cards,so i can build more decks.
I started my Arena run, decided to pick Rouge (Think i had Rouge,Mage,Priest).

This hit the nail on the head. Although many people on here like to tell tall tales about how they are all infinite most decent players average between 3-6 wins a run but that is more than enough to justify the investment.
As a f2p player arena is what makes me be able to compete in standard and get enough gold for the next set. I normally play 4-6 runs a week and just save the gold I don't spend on runs for the next expansion and then stop arena when the announcement is made for the new expansion.
I only have a 4.5 average but by doing this I get most of the cards each new set.
Once you get to like 3 wins, you'll win at least 50 gold and a pack, so that breaks even with the 150g arena run vs 100g packs. Winning more than that will claw back even more of the cost of packs, and eventually even be a net gold positive.
But if you dislike playing arena, don't. The potential gold from arena isn't so much more that it's worth playing if you don't like the format or don't want to split your HS time.
Title^.
I have almost only Paladin cards, and i plan to build more Mage decks.

do arena and use something to assist your draft
Definitely pick arena.

Use Arena instead of gold for acquiring Witchwood packs.
You should still be acquiring some packs of the other expansions to work on your pity timers, which require gold to buy.
Kripparian is the best Arena player in NA, so watch his stream, learn and play arena

Arena. If you are a solid player and have a basic understanding of how arena works right now, you should get at least 4+ wins regularly.
Sure, Every now and then you'll get unlucky und run into the craziest decks, but a positive winrate is not too hard to achieve these days.
Maybe check the latest video of Kripp, regarding the current state of arena:

Nope.
Do you have the time for an hour a day of playing arena? If the answer is no, consider just taking the packs and calling it a day.
If you thought you knew what you think I know, then you'd know I knew you knew I know.

Dust does not burn a hole in the jar. Be careful what you craft, especially before and right after a rotation.
Thanks guys!

Arena, arena and more arena bro. I see arena like a combo, you buy 1 pack for 150g and an opportunity to make more gold.
i made a second account just to practice Arena, sometimes is frustrating but most of the time it is freaking awesome
I guess it depends on whether you like arena and have time to arena and ladder. I just take the packs.
If you enjoy arena, go arena.

Oh yes, that's the BIGGEST THING. If you love arena, who cares just go arena. If you HATE arena, who cares, just get packs.
EVERYTHING we've said assumed you are as open to pack opening as you are arena running.
