Firstly, this thread is not about discussing costs. What I want to know, is what is it like cracking such a big bundle of boosters?
I've not been around for a pre-release yet, and my booster packs have trickled in. This experience has, obviously, made some cracks more exciting than others. I'm really excited for the release of a new set, and will definitely choose at least one of the preorder options.
These options give you a lot of cards. 130 packs = 650 cards, 80 = 400, and 50 = 250. With this in mind, 50 should offer an amazing start to the new set, while going 80 or 130 should give you all the commons, most cards you'd need to taste the playstyles of the set, plus enough dust from extras to craft what you'd like. That might mean 130 packs (even 80) might remove a lot of fun from the game for vets, but my current standard collection is pretty pitiful, and I'd be more than happy to keep cracking Frozen Throne packs with my in-game rewards.
Also, the extra dust from 130 packs should give one the dust required to craft the epics/legends to piece together some current tier one decks, right? Just weighing up my options. I am enjoying this game, and would love to try something other than odd pally in standard.
Really keen to hear the experiences of folks who've preordered in the past, or purchased a huge number of packs on a single set all at once. Has anyone, here on Hearthpwn, had 130 packs to open at the one time?
Never preordered anything, but I have bought close to 60 packs with gold on many occassions. It is fun for the first 3/4 of your packs, but if you haven't gotten anything good then the dread starts kicking in.
The variance in what you get vs what other people get can be annoying too. Too many times where I've gotten 2 legendaries (ranging from bad to mediocre) out of 50-60 packs while multiple other people get 1-2 golden legendaries and/or 3+ mediocre to good non-golden legendaries from the same amount of packs.
I usually preorder the expacs and save smth around 5-6k gold for the packs purchase, so I usually have 110-140 packs at the start of the expac, and I need to say - dat's bonkers!
I havea lot of fun from opening the packs and i always have ~3k dust from duplicates. For me - that's worth it =)
I've ordered the classic 40 package and preordered kobolds and catacombs. During the opening you'll be happy for the first 20 packs or so, but after that the same commons will appear again and again and you kinda hope there will be an option to open everything at once. At 130 it will take a good half an hour or so to open them all.
Afterwards you get most of the cards you need, and for the next 2 weeks or so you try all the new combos and decks. It feels quite amazing.
And from there you either go competitive - legend all the way, or you lose interest because there is no need to grind for the next 3 months or so (unless you are a hardcore collector that is).
And that is some of my personal feelings for preordering. Please leave a like if you have similar experiences. And i wish everyone good luck in the next expansion.
kinda like having sex for the first time. You're really excited, it happens way too fast, and then you're usually kinda disappointed. And then you want more because you likely didn't get what you wanted.

Very much this. When a new expansion hits us mods are quick to swap info and pics regarding our various successful pulls, and it can feel extra shitty if you're the one who walked away with the fewest Legendaries. Hell last time we were all (metaphorically) standing around amazed watching FluxFlashor's insane luck that just dumpstered the rest of us combined. Like, "It's Day 1, I've pulled all the Legendaries and I'm now pulling dupes" luck D:
The first part is also true: you can quickly hit a frustrating + depressing low point where your pity timer gets maxed out, you haven't seen a Legendary or even just an Epic in a while, and you swear you've pulled like 10 of these Snowflipper Penguins already today Jesus Christ this is ridiculous. The salt in the wound that adds to the frustration is if you're like me and use the Pity Timer website to track all of your packs: you log them in one-by-one, these bare minimum packs that just exist to grind your teeth.
So...yeah. Lots of built up excitement waiting for the moment you can open all of the packs, followed by depression and jealousy when you realize you're not even remotely successful compared to how everyone else fared.

I normally just preorder every expansion and don't spend any beyond that. Together with questing gold, it's about 100 packs when the expansion hits, maybe 50 more during the expansion and that's enough for me to have most of the meta decks. This expansion I crafted some memes, even in golden because the pre-order was slightly bigger last expansion. I only dust cards very conservatively, leaving intact anything that sees play or could have broken interactions in the future in case of nerfs. Dunno how much dust I have on "the button" but it should be a lot
130 should be more than enough to craft every meta deck incoming next expansion if your collection is already "caught up". Since you're not, you will need to spend dust on previous expansions for meta decks. 50 should be enough to make a meta deck or two and you'll be able to make a few more during the expansion as you generate gold from quests
The most important thing is that the pre-orders are always better value than normal purchases. If you think you might cave and buy Boomsday packs (or any other packs) after the expansion has already hit, then you're going to lose money. Make sure you buy enough to last until the next pre-order
Here are some stats on what you should find in your average pack. It should help you calculate your dust at the end of opening
I was always opening around 90-110 packs and was excited about what I get.
At the Witchwood release maybe 160-170 packs were waiting for me and during the last half it was quite boring, but still interesting.
Now, I'll have around 250 packs thanks to the to bundles and my saved gold. I know that I'll open everything I need plus so much dust will be recieved. I guess it will not be that exciting to open them, but at least I'll be able to play anyhing I want. And craft some legendaries I really miss.
a good ammount of packs to get every expansion is 100, its a good min/max point because youll end up with every common, every rare, a decent ammount of epics and a few legendaries. enough for you to try basically every new deck that comes up bar maybe 1 or 2.
this is easily doable with a preorder + some gold that you save up from quests etc then keep saving dust/gold for the next expansion after that 100 packs, and eventually you dont have to preorder anymore and can survive on gold even without doing arena
I usually preorder the expacs and save smth around 5-6k gold for the packs purchase, so I usually have 110-140 packs at the start of the expac, and I need to say - dat's bonkers!

Btw, I will preorder 80 pax bundle now.
That is bonkers! I can definitely see how that would work for people who've been playing a while. I've been purchasing wild packs. I feel a little silly though, have more of some wild sets than standard one XD. I also spread my reward gold around all the sets. Though wanting to polish off my Frozen Throne collection right now.
I've ordered the classic 40 package and preordered kobolds and catacombs. Oh man, that sounds crazy! I'll be sure not to look at what other people got! After I make an expensive purchase (of anything), I refuse to look at the market for a few months. Bad memories of when I purchased a Dreamcast. I was in no way rolling in cash back then, and half a week afterwards I found one for less than half the price. Was fuming!
Usually I've been satisfied with 100 packs. With that and dust/gold I've been saving got me all the good cards of the previous sets. I did pre order the 80 pack bundle so I'm already at the 100 pack limit. Let's see how the expansion turns out. Might even end up buying both bundles.
I compare it to actual boosters like mtg I have done large quantities of both Hearthstone it is nice knowing whenever you see a deck you like the look of you can craft it. Mtg however I have had moments of opening a few hundred boosters then pulling a single card that pays for the lot of them.
One provides immediate joy (this is essentially gambling however) the other sets you up for mild enjoyment from dopamine while opening followed by a few months of being able to craft any deck you want when you start to get bored of the game.
Opening a ton of packs at once makes you realize how little cards 135 a set is. I can't even count the number of times I'll open two of the same common in a pack. And honestly it just gets boring after a while. The orange glow and rare WAAAAH GOLDEN LEGENDARY! are always exciting but come too far and in between. I keep track of all of my legendary openings, and I have far too many that get to 30+ cards before I get something. And then in classic packs it's 4 packs and GOLDEN Cho, 6 packs and The Beast, so I guess that's just RNG.
Firstly, this thread is not about discussing costs. What I want to know, is what is it like cracking such a big bundle of boosters?

I'm an everyday F2P - I earn about 2200 gold each month from daily quests and winning 3+ games, and I have about three dozen friends, which gives me a "Play a Friend" request a couple times each week, for about 800-ish extra gold each month. That's about 120 free packs for each expansion. As you explain, 100+ packs are enough to collect a complete set of commons, but it's also worth recognizing that only about one-third of each set ever sees regular competitive play on ladder - that's only 45-ish cards. 100+ packs will also give you a complete set of "playable" rares, and about four complete sets of "playable" epics. If you dust all your duplicates, junk epics and legendaries, and gold cards, you'll be able to craft three or four playable legendaries. I had a lucky streak from Gadgetzan through Frozen Throne, where I opened a golden legendary from each set (we also received a bunch of bonus packs from Gadgetzan, owing to the "release day bug" that nerfed our day one packs.) So I've had plenty of dust floating around for the past year or so. I'm currently missing two or three legendaries I'd really like from Yot Kraken, and Yot Mammoth, and a couple more from Witchwood - but otherwise, I've got every card I want, which is pretty good for F2P.
I've posted previously, regarding exploiting the "Play a Friend" quest - this site has a thread for making friends, currently on its seventh iteration. Each previous iteration has had as many as 50K participants, so it isn't too difficult getting a group of friends on your HS account. I'm lucky enough to live in a city with lots of FSGs, and I made a lot of friends pretty quickly IRL. If three dozen friends results in 10-ish requests each month, you can calculate your expected PaF value for smaller groups of friends - even having just ten friends should get you an extra 240 gold each month, which is 10 bonus packs for each expansion, and thirty for the year . . .
I usually open something like 60-70 packs at each release, from gold.
And yeah, excitement is great.
However, value is obviously bound to variation. In Un'Goro i was lucky with a handful of t1 legendaries, in Witchwood not so much.
For me, the greatest downside of mass opening is seeing that a vast majority of your packs is occupied by the same card that keeps popping at each packs, while you can't even fulfill the list of common cards. It happened to me at every release, and even if i strive to stay scientific, i started to think that pack randomness is rigged.
Excitement stays strong. Best hearthstone moments are during releases imo.
If you get 130, you’re garrenteed 7 legendaries (1 free, 2 from preorders, 1 from first 10, then at least 3 from the last 120 packs.
I really enjoy opening packs. I can only dream to get as luck as last time, as in the last 10 packs I pulled 3 legendaries in Witchwood. I actually want my 2 Golden legendaries to be usable and not dust, since they are so unique. I pulled a golden Genn but was disappointed that it doesn’t produce any thing else Golden.

I normally open around 200-300 at on the release day of an expansion.
The first 20 packs or so, I'll take my time, then I'm like "fuck it, just want to rip all these open and play with the cards already".
