Inspired by one too many ropers, I was wondering if there could be a fair way to make turns shorter for those of us who don't just tab out and take as long as possible to make a T1 pass turn. There's no real way around it in ranked as it could completely ruin slower/combo decks, but I would love to see an option added for casual and tavern brawls. I personally don't feel like sitting around for 15 minutes to complete a game and I often play those two modes just to get quick games in and/or complete quests. Yes, I could just concede and move on but that encourages people to use that strategy and score wins without actual merit or skill. Instead, my proposal is to have a check box for shorter turns where you get matched up against people who also want shorter turns. The timer could be set to around 45 seconds to still give time to think but still require people to act quickly. Here are the benefits of it:
1. It makes the modes more casual. Short turns becomes about doing things quickly to get a fun game in but not sweating the consequences of your actions.
2. It shortens games. If I want a long sit-down session, I'll go play ranked. If I want to blitz through a fast game while on my break or before making dinner, this gives me a guarantee that I can complete a game within a reasonable amount of time without conceding.
3. It makes it easier to get rewards. Quicker games = tavern brawl pack quicker and also more attempts at wins on quests.
4. It crushes un-fun combos. My favourite type of deck is combo so this isn't a hate-on for combo. But when certain tavern brawls become "who can cycle through their entire deck and OTK in T1?", it completely ruins the brawl for me. When a Razakus priest or Exodia mage spends 90 seconds killing everything they possibly can before finishing you off, it just puts me in a sour mood. With short games, you just do your move and then move on.
5. It lowers salt levels. People aren't playing the game type to be douchebags to each other and anger people into concession or misplays. They are playing because they just want to play some quick games and not deal with trolls.
6. It wouldn't affect the meta. In ranked, this would be a terrible idea as people would use short mode to get an advantage (farm aggro decks with low combo control decks, farm quick wins with hyper-aggro) or you would see a different meta between modes. In casual and TB it doesn't matter what the meta is as these modes are made for just playing, not competing.
7. It wouldn't (hugely) affect wait times. There's already enough people playing this game that you can match up easily in any mode at pretty much any time.
As far as I can see, there's only positives to allowing this option. Perhaps the timer is shorter/longer for earlier/later turns, or is set at something like 60s instead, but any way it's set up would be an improvement on what we have now.
I would rather see the timer shorted to quick at the beginning of the game and gets longer each turn until it hits the 90 second cap we have now. For example it would look like this:
Turn 1: 20 seconds
Turn 2: 30 seconds
Turn 3: 40 seconds
Turn 4 50 seconds
Turn 5 60 seconds
Turn 6 70 seconds
Turn 7 80 seconds
Turn 9 90 seconds
I think this would shorten games and even if you have a turn 1 roper it's only 20 seconds.
I don't think it would be good to change the timer for all modes. I think it should be an optional thing. Sometimes people are making plays where you have to wait for animations (card generation, etc) where your decisions are impeded.
Give a player 100 seconds global pool of extra time. Every turn player has 20 seconds default. Once player plays longer than 20 seconds, extra time is consumed. If player plays faster than 20 seconds, extra time is restored (max 100).

Maybe you should be using the time available to you to make the best decision and plan out your future turns?
Who cares if it's casual or brawl, there is nothing wrong with using the time available to you. It doesn't mean the player is just alt-tabbed or not paying attention.

Here's the thing about number seven, and why blizzard can't really do this. Yes. Any INDIVIDUAL option like this that basically require a multiplication of the play modes could probably be handled by their massive playerbase. But if they added in ALL the little quality of life suggestions that people come up with, it would destroy the wait times. Right now there's six pvp modes. Your suggestion would bump that number up to 9, which is still reasonable. Add another option like this and it bumps the modes up to 15. A third option would bump the split to 27. It gets out of hand really quickly. So, basically, they can't add options like these to game modes as casually as some people seem to think. They need to be be serious very important splits like the difference between wild and standard and the difference between casual and ladder. (Or arena and tavern brawl from the others)
That said, gameplay options inside the challenge a friend mode dodge this issue. So, it'd be cool if they added them there.
Some people play decks that are more than brainless aggro and need to figure out clever ways to get lethal (like the 'missed lethal' videos that Toast sometimes makes).
Doesn't Gwent have a great system to promote good sportsmanship? Something like at the end of each match both players can opt to give each other the Gwent equivalent of arcane dust if they were both good sports? Bring that to HS. It's amazing what even a small reward would do to decrease BMing and roping. Play off people's greed.
while this seems fine, i know that it would be a disaster for me. I play on mobile, and the game is really laggy on my phone, so I might end up having almost no time each turn. if I ever disconnect, even just like switching to data from to wifi, it can already take most of the turn to get back in and play. because of this, I know that I for one could never play it, and I asume that most of the mobile playerbase is in a similar position that I am.
However, it seems like a good idea, although I am doubtful how many people would choose this over playing with normal turns.

You can read above to see that my main decks are combo decks. That being said, I rarely need to take my entire turn to make a play. Sure, find clever ways to get lethal in ranked but nobody needs 90 seconds for every single turn in modes like casual or tavern brawl. They are literally about playing the game casually.
I will never unerstand why some people are so riddled with ADHD that they can't stomach the thought of waiting for an opponent to take their turn.
Aside from the very real and acceptable fact that every player should have the right to think about and plan out their turn, there is also the mechanical problem where some people (on mobile devices) have difficulty with staying connected reliably when the signal is poor. I've lost count of the number of times I have had to play right up to the rope just because the game app takes seemingly forever to register my move instructions.
With a shorter turn time it unfairly punishes people with poor connection.

Because it's annoying as all hell when they roping on turn 1 or 2. There is litterally only usually 1 or 2 options to play...play a 1 cost card or pass. It's not rocket science that you NEED 90 seconds.

If your connection is THAT bad...maybe you shouldn't be playing! Just a thought. lol

Sometimes youre on a train or signal just drops for whatever reason so its not that you always know youre gonna have a bad connection.

Or maybe they're spending turn one and two focused on how the future turns are going to play out? Sometimes there are a lot of things to consider on your first few turns, especially considering winning or losing can sometimes be determined in those first few starting turns.
It's like the video of Lifecoach playing Patron Warrior against Trump back in the day. Trump was making fun of him on camera for roping on turn one and two, having a grand old time against ol' Ropecoach. Except he smashed Trump and played his future turns perfectly because he actually took the time to consider how he was going to act.
Hearthstone games last an average of what, seven to ten minutes? If you're really that impatient maybe you should play something else.

Wanna screw with turn length? Play Noz, otherwise.. No.
It's casual mode so why do you care? Just concede and move on if you don't want to play someone.
I would love a shorter timer. If "lightning mode" were available I would probably play that exclusively.
