I very very briefly played this game back when it was fairly new. I just came back and I have been trying to read guides and suggestions on how to get up and running and I feel more lost than ever. I completely feel out classed, I cannot beat anyone. I bought Naxx and never finished it before and I went back to try to finish it and I cannot even beat Gothik on normal. I could really use some hand holding to get a grip on this game and at least have a general understanding of how to be successful.
A lot of it will come to the first question which is going to be how much are you willing to spend?
Classes like Hunter at current have some good low cost decks and that could be a good place to start. I know when I came back to the game after a big break I used to search for decks filtered by dust cost being 0 over at http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks . This will at least get you setup with a deck using the basic cards you get.
I'd focus on standard for now. Whilst you obviously have some wild cards from Naxx there probably won't be enough with just those for wild. Hope this helps as a starting point.
Uh, dude, I don`t wanna upset you or anything, but I believe that all bosses in all adventures can be beaten with basic-only cards after a few tries. Go to Icy veins, they post that stuff. As for Naxx- it was awesome in terms of cards, but there is a catch - they are out of Standard mode now. So you can do 2 things - finish Naxx, at your own pace and dust everything to get semi-viable deck in standard. OR you can play in wild casual mode and build up your collection slowly and steady.
And general suggestions - go and watch some streamers/YouTube (I mean lessons by Trump/ Kripp`s memes are priceless. Toast can be pretty fun too), Try to understand what classes and archetypes do you enjoy most. Don`t try ladder or arena for a few weeks at least - it will be very frustrating experience and you will be tilted. And yes, if you would like the game I strongly suggest you buying at least new adventure.
To sum this up: don`t overdo yourself, try to find things you enjoy, take your time, read things like tempostorm and watch better players.
Getting better takes time. As far as decks go, a free to play hunter deck can get you through basically every adventure with a bit of luck (I use http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/824610-free-to-play-hunter on my separate free to play account, only has one rare).
Deckbuilding aside, as far as general handholding goes I would need to know more about your overall card gaming experience (or lack thereof), and more about what you feel in particular seems to be getting in your way.
I believe you are right about beating them with basic cards, that is where I am a little miffed. I am usually fairly good at games of this nature but for whatever reason, I cannot crack the code to beat these guys. I figured they would be some easy wins to dust cards but that doesn't seem to be the case.
If you're having trouble beating the adventure content on "normal," that suggests that you can improve a ton by learning the basics of the game better.
I'd strongly recommend taking a look at this YouTube playlist from Trump, who for each class puts together decks using only basic cards and uses them to demonstrate core Hearthstone play principles and skills. He also discusses how to evolve decks as you go from rank 0 to rank 10 with each class (and earn more cards doing so.)
The level 10 basic deck lists are also pretty good for queueing up in "casual" mode to complete quests. (Be sure to queue in "casual" mode because after playing 20 or 30 games you'll start facing other opponents with similarly limited card sets and beginner-level skills. In "ranked" mode you'll be matched against random opponents at the same rank, who may just be a high-ranked player ranking up for the month.)
I have been winning with Hunter on my F2P accounts, at least being able to break 20 and such. Crackling Razormaw is a broken card and I'm actually surprised there aren't calls for nerf. Hunter is good because you don't need expensive cards and the deck still works even with substitutions. I have based all my decks off of this one, but most of my F2P accounts don't even have all the cards.
@Shadowwolf I have a ton of Magic experience, HOWEVER I am awful at deckbuilding and I decklist everything. Once I have a good deck I am pretty good at executing the deck but deck composition is definitely a challenge for me.
6. Trade Favourably. for example. if your opponent has a 4/2 and a 2/2 on board and you have a 3/4 then kill the 2/2 unless you are feeling pressured or you are playing around some AOE.
7. Just play in casual mode until you feel confident.
8. After losing a game ask the question "Why did I lose this game". The answer maybe something like "My 5 minion board just got flamestriked". So now you will try to play around that card.
For in depth understanding of game basics like health as a resource, card advantage, curve, mana utilisation, etc refer to Trump's teachings. (as Lysenko told). They are very good. But just ignore his card reviews. He is terrible at rating cards.
Gothic is beatable with basic cards, although it is not super easy. Even if you have experience a bad draw pon your side and a good draw on his can make you lose. However, the key is to take good minions (like Chillwind Yeti and Sen'jin Shieldmasta) and some of the cards that buff other cards like Shattered Sun Cleric and Stormwind Champion. Other cards which are in the classic set and useful are Sunfury Protector and Defender of Argus (to taunt the 0-attack minions) and Abusive Sergeant and Dark Iron Dwarf (to attack with the 0-attack minions).
Edit: Frostwolf warlord is also a good card in that matchup, because you likely will have a bunch of minions on your side.
Dusting everything from Naxxramas is bad avice if you do not know what you are going to do anyway. Wild is a lot of fun and easy to get into, in particular if you have all the Naxxramas cards. So my advice is to keep all the good cards from Naxx at least until you know what you want (and ladder in wild is also less competetive than standard, another reason for a beginner with old cards to try wild). And also keep the common cards, since they do not give you a lot of dust anyway.
If you do not have a lot of cards, good cards from Naxx are:
There are better replacements in newer sets, like Jeweled Macaw is superior to webspinner but since you probably do not have them, I would keep at least all of the above cards (of course I would, I kept all of my wild cards, but you know what I mean).
I would suggest staying away from constructed play as much as possible which means never buying a pack of cards for 100 gold. You are at such a disadvantage in ranked play that it isn't even funny. Use ranked play to help you with your quests until you get to rank 20 then stop (every month).
In your situation:
Complete Quests (make sure you get new quests, don't get greedy)
Do not spend Gold on card packs
Pay 150 Gold for arena and pick a class/hero (look below for further directions)
Do not choose your cards instead go to http://www.heartharena.com/ and let that website help you choose your cards. Also check out what kind of deck you have which will be helpful when playing arena.
Play arena (you are looking for 3 wins 3 losses to break even, anything above that and you are coming out ahead.
@Shadowwolf I have a ton of Magic experience, HOWEVER I am awful at deckbuilding and I decklist everything. Once I have a good deck I am pretty good at executing the deck but deck composition is definitely a challenge for me.
Cool, I came to Hearthstone with a large magic background as well, so the transition isn't terrible. Deckbuilding is the biggest hurdle, but, (as we're seeing here) the number of available, budget decklists on this very site is astronomical so you should be able to find something that works regardless.
You're already familiar with all the important concepts for success then? Mana curve, card advantage, etc?

Yes curve, card advantage etc I have a very good working knowledge of.

To be fair, Naxxramas has, in my opinion, some of the toughest bosses of all adventures. But maybe because I completed Naxxramas when I just started playing this game. Don't forget there is also the welcome pack option for I believe 6 dollars, which gives you 10 classic packs and a classic legendary. This is also a option for you.
Okay, best place to start: what deck are you currently trying to beat the adventure with? What class do you have the most good cards with? (Not even just by rarity, though that's often telling, even solid commons is fine in the case of classes like Hunter and Mage.)
Try this one, I just beat him with it. Give it a couple of tries.
Trade with your minions so that your minions live and his die. Dont care too much about your health in the beginning, but about the health of your minions. As long as you are over 10 health, everything is fine. And if you can, trade away the spirits (by buffing them).
The only standard adventure right now is Karazhan and from what they've said it'll be the last one. It'll be leaving the standard format next April most likely.
Some classes do have a decent set of cards in it whilst others not so much. Starting back with very little I'd suggest sticking to one class as much as possible and building up a collection for one at a time.
Also a while ago they added a pack bundle where you got 1x classic legendary with it, great value and probably worth a purchase if you don't buy anything else.
I just tried to put this deck together and I only have like 15 cards lol.
What I've done on my EU account, where I'm playing entirely f2p, is to dust cards mercilessly in order to create a competitive hunter deck like that one.

@Blitzias I am trying to remain fairly f2p. I will buy the adventures but beyond that I do not intend to drop much of anything on packs.

Free to try and find a game, dealing cards for sorrow, cards for pain.

General tips to improve:-
1. Always ask the question before making any play - do I go face or trade?
2. Try to activate your synergies. But against aggro decks just throw out your stuff.
3. Try to use all your mana every turn and stay on curve.
4. Try to have RNG in your favour by eliminating options, like kill a weak minion first then play Deadly Shot.
5. Protect your important minions like Northshire Cleric or Mana Wyrm behind Taunts.
6. Trade Favourably. for example. if your opponent has a 4/2 and a 2/2 on board and you have a 3/4 then kill the 2/2 unless you are feeling pressured or you are playing around some AOE.
7. Just play in casual mode until you feel confident.
