A new age has come!
With the new Naxxramas cards out, a new meta has begun, the Deathrattle decks! If you like decks that have good combos and require much tactics to win, then this might be something for you.
My Card Choices
Playing this deck as a Shaman is necessary because of the Ancestral Spirit and the new Reincarnate. These two cards are essential in managing combos with big deathrattle minions. But I will come back to that further on.
2x Earth Shock: Earth Shock is one of the best spells a Shaman has to offer. With some extra spell damage from Bloodmage Thalnos and a Wrath of Air Totem it's one of the best cards to remove other deathrattle minions like Harvest Golem or cards like Twilight Drake.
2x Lightning Bolt: Again this card is one of the best removals for a Shaman. Just try to combine this with some spell damage cards to get more out of it.
2x Leper Gnome: Since Leper Gnome is the only 1 mana deathrattle minion. it's one of the best early cards to keep up with your opponent. But also midgame and lategame it can be devastating to your opponent if you combine them with either Baron Rivendare or Kel'Thuzad.
2x Undertaker: Undertaker is your key card in being succesful early on. When you combine this card with cheap deathrattle minions like Leper Gnome, Haunted Creeper, Loot Hoarder, Nerubian Egg and Harvest Golem, you can get ahead of your opponent very easy. If they can't deal with Undertaker at the beginning they have a big problem.
1x Ancestral Spirit: like I have said before, Ancestral Spirit is one of the key cards for some good combos mid- and lategame. Especially when u have a Baron Rivendare on the field there are multiple options to get some board presence. For example with Baron Rivendare on the board, you can play a Sludge Belcher combined with Ancestral Spirit to set a gigantic block for your opponent. When they kill your Sludge Belcher it will not only summon 2 Slime but you will also get 2 Sludge Belcher back. This card is also a great way to protect your key minions like Baron Rivendare and Kel'Thuzad.
2x Reincarnate: combined with Ancestral Spirit this card gives a great way to gain some board presence. Use it on Stalagg or Feugen when the other is dead to summon a free Thaddius, or maybe 2 when you have a Baron Rivendare on the field.
1x Bloodmage Thalnos: One of the best deathrattle minions in the game. It's just a cheap minion to boost your Undertaker. It provides carddraw and most important it gives your removal cards more power.
1x Haunted Creeper: I used to play with 2 coppies of Haunted Creeper in my deck. It's a great card early on and it is a pain for your oppnent. The problem with this card lategame is that when u also have a Baron Rivendare on the field, it wil summon 4 Spectral Spider. This might cause a bit of a problem since you can only have up to 7 minions on the board at the same time. With some bad luck if your opponent clears most of your board you will only summon Spectral Spider till the board is full and you wont get the Thaddius because he is the 8th minion to spawn. That's quite a waste!
2x Loot Hoarder: There is not much to say about this card. Great 2 mana drop with deathrattle + carddraw. Combine with Baron Rivendare for more cards.
1x Hex: This removal card is only for when you cant get rid of an threathening minion in any other way. Most of the times you can just tarde your own minions for your opponent's. But if there is realy no way out there is always Hex.
2x Lightning Storm: With the fast zoo and rush decks nowadays this card is a must. Be carefull about the overload since it can ruín your strategy in later turns.
2x Harvest Golem: Yep, good old Harvest Golem is one of the best deathrattle minions in the game. Before the Naxxramas cards he was a pain for your oppenent but with some well played Baron Rivendare and Kel'Thuzad you can flood the board with Harvest Golem and Damaged Golem.
1x Baron Rivendare: This card is by far the most important card in this deck. It's like an Gadgetzan Auctioneer for a Miracle Rogue. Drawing this card always brings a smile up my face. The combinations with this card are endless since all your minions' power has just doubled. Never play this card when you can't get something out of it rigth away. It's also wise to protect this card with Ancestral Spirit.
1x Cult Master: Use this card to get some extra carddraw from your cheap minions. The best time to use this card is when you are ready for some combos and u want to make room on your board by getting rid of all the cheap minions.
1x Leeroy Jenkins: This card fits so well in this deck. It is like you're playing with a Miracle Rogue. Combine Leeroy Jenkins with Reincarnate for some deadly combo's!
1x Feugen / 1x Stalagg: These two good friends are the main lategame damage source for this deck. Besides the fact that a 4/7 and 7/4 minion for only 5 mana is a good buy, it summons a giant Thaddius when they (both) die. So when your first one is down, try to get as much coppies of Thaddius from the second one by using cards like Reincarnate, Ancestral Spirit, Baron Rivendare and sometimes Kel'Thuzad.
2x Sludge Belcher: This card is a strong mid- and lategame minion. It does not only protect your valuable card like Baron Rivendare and Kel'Thuzad, but it can also destroy your opponents hp and minions. Making multiple coppies of Sludge Belcher is nice to do.
1x Cairne Bloodhoof: This card is just a big Harvest Golem, and can be devastating for your opponent. When they can't get rid of this card in a "cheap" way then it wil just come back to wipe the board and the HP for you.
1x Sylvanas Windrunner: This might be the most nasty deathrattle minion in the deck. Sylvanas Windrunner alone is already great, combined with Baron Rivendare, Reincarnate and Ancestral Spirit you can snatch your opponent's minions away from them.
1x Kel'Thuzad: This card is great to clear the opponents board. When you both have some minions on the field and he is just blocking you with Big taunt minions or divine shields this card is the solution. When turn 8 arrives play Kel'Thuzad and suicide all your minions. Not only will it pop their deathrattles but you also get them back at the end of the turn. Also, there are few AoE spells that can whipe Kel'Thuzad with the rest of your minions. So your opponent has to kill Kel'Thuzad first, and that can be very hard when your blocking him with some Sludge Belcher. So this card most of the times means the end of your opponent and the start of your victory.
Budget Replacements
I Know that there are a lot of legendary minions in this deck but most of them can be obtained by completing the Naxxramas adventure. For the others; here are some replacements.
Bloodmage Thalnos: one extra Haunted Creeper, to stay with the mana curve, this 2 mana replacement is okay. Just keep in mind that your board doesnt get flooded by 1/1 Spectral Spider. Just suicide your Spectral Spider whenever you can.
Leeroy Jenkins: Bloodlust is a viable replacement for leeroy since it still offers you this burst you need to finish off an opponent. With Bloodlust you only have to make sure you have som minions on the board. But the bright side of Bloodlust is that it doesn't use your Reincarnate to do this burst damage.
Cairne Bloodhoof: Fire Elemental is a good minion as a replacement since it deals some damage at start but also as a 6/5 minion is strong on the board.
Sylvanas Windrunner: this card is hard to replace since it has quite an unique effect. But i would recommend an extra Hex. Just to get rid of those nasty big minions.
Mulligan
You always want to mulligan for some cheap cards like Undertaker, Leper Gnome, Haunted Creeper and Loot Hoarder.
You can also keep Harvest Golem when u already have an 1 or 2 mana card.
V.s. zoo and rush decks I would also keep one Lightning Storm because it can be essential for surviving in the early turns.
Tips & Tricks
Here are some clever tips & tricks:
- Use Reincarnate on a boosted minion of your opponent. It will bring it back unboosted. Great v.s. Void Terror, Scavenging Hyena, Edwin VanCleef and Frothing Berserker.
- Use Ancestral Spirit as a safety net on Kel'Thuzad. Not ony will you get one back, but at the end of your turn you also get the destroyed Kel'Thuzad back.
- Playing Kel'Thuzad + Reincarnate on turn 10 is a great move. It will give you 2x Kel'Thuzad at the end of the turn.
- Deathlord is quite poppular at the moment. Playing Reincarnate and maybe even Ancestral Spirit on it can be very funny. Getting a Kel'Thuzad on turn 3 is a great way to win.
Combos
This deck has a variety of combos, and that is what makes this deck so much fun to play with. Here are some examples:
With Leeroy Jenkins
Leeroy Jenkins + Reincarnate = 12 damage / 6 mana.
Leeroy Jenkins + Reincarnate + Reincarnate = 18 damage / 8 mana.
Leeroy Jenkins + Reincarnate + Ancestral Spirit +Reincarnate = 24 damage / 10 mana.
(With Baron Rivendare already on the board) Leeroy Jenkins + Reincarnate + Ancestral Spirit +Reincarnate = 30 damage / 10 mana.
With Thaddius
(With Feugen dead) Stalagg + Reincarnate = 1x Thaddius + Stalagg.
(With Feugen dead + Baron Rivendare on the board) Stalagg + Ancestral Spirit + Reincarnate = 2x Thaddius + 3x Stalagg.
With Sylvanas Windrunner
Sylvanas Windrunner + Reincarnate = 1x Sylvanas Windrunner+ 1x Mind Control.
(With Baron Rivendare already on the board) Sylvanas Windrunner + Reincarnate = 1x Sylvanas Windrunner+ 2x Mind Control.
(With Baron Rivendare already on the board) Sylvanas Windrunner + Ancestral Spirit + Reincarnate = 3x Sylvanas Windrunner+ 2x Mind Control.
Recent changes
-1x Ancestral Spirit: Ancestral Spirit is a great card for one of your combos. The problem was that most of the times Ancestral Spirit is just "overkill". I think just one copy of Ancestral Spirit fits better in this deck. There is still 1 Ancestral Spirit left so it's still possible to flood your board with multiple Thaddius or so.
-1x Flametongue Totem: I don't know why, but to me this card didn't have the extra value I've hoped for.
+1x Leeroy Jenkins: This card is just great to finish of your opponent. Leeroy combines great with Reincarnate. It's just like he works well with Shadowstep with a Miracle Rogue.
+1x Cult Master: Of all the cards that are out there, this is the best option for some extra carddraw. The fact that it's a 4drop minion doesnt hurt either since we have had a short on that. Just use it wisely and you will find out that your carddraw will improve to sustainable levels.
After 2 games in casual to get some quests done, with this deck, I couldn't resist but to try the deck in ranked at rank 5. Luckily I got paired against token druid for my first test in ranked. The game went pretty smoothly, the early minions made me feel safer than playing other shaman decks that don't have much early board presence. Since I don't have a second Ancestral Spirit and a Bloodmage Thalnos I tossed the 2 Rockbiter Weapons in to help maintain early board control. Also put in a Fire Elemental to replace Cairne Bloodhoof I really like the concept of this deck and will most likely continue using it in the future. +1 for sure.
Im not sure how to add screenshots in comments but at turn 8 I had 2 Thaddius' on board with a taunt totem and leper gnome + loot hoarder.
*Update* : second game beat a rogue really badly had almost full hp left and killed her. The Kel'Thuzad is really strong in this deck and I really like it (combined with Flametongue Totem and Rockbiter Weapon can make some really good tempo plays)]. 2-0 so far at rank 5 going to keep playing it, thanks for taking me away from only playing hunter.
*3rd game lost vs. hunter 2-1. I was in control had stalagg on board with flametongue would of had lethal next turn if he didn't have eaglehorn bow to finish me. He was at 10 hp
4th game beat hunter at around 21 hp left. I believe it was a beast deck.
5th game lost versus agro hunter. 3-2 ratio with 5 games played.
I'd say this deck is great against anything but agro. Agro decks are mostly likely going to have better plays / board control in the early game which would make it difficult to recover from. Other than that I can see this deck doing really well against tempo/ control decks in this meta. Thanks for sharing it!
I feel like we have no defence. so i took out a lightning bolt for feral spirit. considering putting in argus for like cairne etc. to often they go for face and ignore my board and lose. currently rank 5 and climbing i love this deck. its very strong and very fun. Best of both worlds. not like the shitty hunter meta. that was not fun at all. I find i almost always lose against hunters as iv said. but other then that its semi weak against priest and zoo
How do i deal with hunters. i get owned every time
A few words of advice to anyone playing this deck. I currently play it without Kel'Thuzad (don't have him yet). Don't drop baron on turn 4 unless you have one hell of a trade coming, save him for turn 6-8 where you can drop him to a board behind your sludge belchers or taunt totems. I will sometimes keep Stallag or Fuegen in my opening hand (against rogue / druid / priest mostly) especially if I have the coin. When it comes to Ancestral Spirit, drop it on either your heavy deathrattle guys or your baron / kel'thuzad after they get silenced. A really good move is to drop Fuegen or Stallag on turn 6. (preferably Stallag) Turn 7, suicide him into something big on their board, drop Fuegen and then drop Ancestral Spirit on it. Don't ancestral one of them unless the other has died though, silencing the spirited one makes you cry. Also try to have baron on the board at the same time. This deck is really playable as is, but I would recommend maybe tossing in Leeroy, he has some good synergy with Reincarnate, basically letting you pull off the Rogue's Shadowstep combo for a 12 damage turn 6 (or 18 turn 8 with ancestral, possibly more with baron / kel'Thuzad in play) Not sure what you'd swap him for though (using him in pace of Kel right now)
Seems like the common trouble for all deathrattle Shaman decks are its lack of draw power, honestly I think this is the only factor that is holding it back from being a legitimate and consistent threat in constructed. There are 2 Loot Hoarders, but will you consider a Mana Tide Totem?
Heya ,
I start playing this deck just after u updated it.
LOve the Deathrattle gimmicks'.
I just came to the same as u already did The eggs just do to little and therefore I replaced them whit earthshock and a nother hex I found that a little more carddraw cant hurt either to complete the deck combo's so I consider putting in a mana tide totem or nova engineers
love to play it, I check this deck for further updates.
Gr Hypertjuh
Thank you for the Deck. It actually served me very well and it made me lol everytime i got the Thaddius Factory Going :P.
Gimmicks aside, its actually built pretty solidly, the only real complaints i had was it had far too little removal. Your right in saying lightning bolt and earth shock are shaman's best removal, but when you only have one each in the deck, you rarely draw it when you need it. so i personally cut the eggs for it. It's probably just me but everytime i use those eggs, their either too slow and i just get out damaged or the opponent just has an answer. not to mention with the exception of defender, the only enabler is reincarnate, which we really would want to use on something better.
one other change i made is Leper Gnome for Zombie Chow. I know Zombie Chow's downside is terrible, but Leper was just dying to token's too much. zombie chow when played early is absolutely amazing as it deals with early threats very well and dealing with 2 2/3's on turn 1 if you undertaker coin zombie chow is a nightmare to people
i did cut the argus when i tried it, but i replaced with bloodlust, don't know if i'd reccomend it per say, but when i was playing with the deck i noticed i was having at least 3-4 minions on the board at all times thanks to the deathrattle and totems. it acts as a secondary wincon if you don't get fuegen or stalagg. Adding a second hex does seem like the more reliable option though.
The zombie chow didn't really hurt too much mid/late game since even if you do get them with kel thuzad on the board, their still 2/3 bodies that can trade with their 2 mana 3/2's and other weakened minions. makes the game take a bit longer, but once you get kel out the game is normally over anyways. Kel can win games if he stays on the board, and with the support from reincarnate if silenced, or ancetral spirit if the opponents board has fatties he rarely goes completely away. not to mention you get a second kel thuzad and create a real nightmare for the opponent.
So if it has Deathrattle put it in :P
Interested turn on it though, my deathrattle is more shaman-based... I'll test what I can of this one
