LOL. Dumb thread. Sad that some people think EVERY SINGLE THING that happens in the world has some sort of subversive storyline underneath. Occam's Razor....well and truly dead in today's world.
His departure wasn't sudden, he's a professional that most likely handed his notice to the company weeks/months ago. Letting us players know was due to choice, which he didn't need to do.
Expansions are designed in advance, they have stated that the next two expansions are already complete and Shudderwock was probably designed a year ago.
He was there for 15 years, designed Hearthstone for 10, built up a career which oversaw the development of over 2900 cards in this game. And you believe that one card, caused the company to "force" him to resign.
OP, Ben Brode very probably made that comment because he already knew he was going to leave Blizzard. The comment seems like a consecuence of that, not the cause.
Probably not, but the coincidence is interesting. Especially with another Blizzard Exec. leaving as well. HOWEVER, and this is important: correlation does not mean causation. Just because two things happen around the same time does not mean one caused the other.
In fact, I'd argue that possibly he had already made his decision to leave, and that's why he was less guarded with his comments in the interview. What would they do to him, if he was already leaving anyways? Makes more sense to me that he was less diplomatic because he already knew he was leaving; not that they pushed him out because he was un-diplomatic.
Edit: I should read the comments before mine, before I post. Silly me.
Mhhh... some of you never worked for a company it seems.
When you get fired, specially for big companies, many times you don't leave right away. You usually stay a couple of days or weeks before leaving, completing what you were doing. Also, the company usually says that you should not mention anybody that (probably mentioned in the contract).
So, opposite to what many may believe, this is probably not sudden at all and both Brode and Chu knew this way before.

^^^This.
Everyone else with all these conspiracy theories seems to be getting all their ideas about the real world from TV and movies.

I'm really surprised you post a question and then immediately dismiss everyone disagreeing with you. Although, perhaps I shouldn't be. I think it's clear from Brode's Twitter and from Chu's response that they are leaving together to start a new (probably indie) company. One of them probably recruited the other to work together.
"I have seen worlds bathed in the Makers' flames, their denizens fading without as much as a whimper. Entire planetary systems born and razed in the time that it takes your mortal hearts to beat once. Yet all throughout, my own heart devoid of emotion... of empathy. I. Have. Felt. Nothing. A million-million lives wasted. Had they all held within them your tenacity? Had they all loved life as you do?"
Nope, look at the timing, he knew he was leaving after the WW launch. I've seen people bolt where I work, and this is textbook. Chu's exit is far more problematic due to the abrupt nature, but likely related to Brode's. These may not be the last we have seen, but certainly not the work of Blizzard and they had no idea it was coming or they would be controlling the narrative instead of sitting in stunned silence.

Says the guy making a speculative thread because he has no idea.
His resignation was done professionally, not only in his letter to the community but the timing for the company. He left shortly after an expansion drop so his departure didn’t take away from the new release and also wouldn’t impede whoever takes the reigns moving forward. Thinking otherwise is tinfoil hattery at it’s finest.
Ben Brode was one of the reasons that game is in such a bad shape. I am relieved that we don't need to worry about him any longer. I hope we don't need to see him anywhere close to this game.
No, that's silly. His departure was definitely planned well in advance. In addition, shudderwock hasn't really been causing many problems and has simply been blown out of proportion. There is zero chance it had anything to do with his leaving.
He's starting a company but he has no details. He doesn't even know if they will make games or not.
Probably because he has signed a non-compete agreement. It is quite common that he could not create a game that would directly compete with Blizzard for up to a year or more. I know for a fact that many other companies have this sort of thing on place.

no.
Wished to be pink.
Then did.
Then fired myself.
Then did again.

Be realistic.
He quit because his meta got stale

Ben Brode should patent his laugh.
Oblivion!

It’s because he was laughing too loud and his laugh was starting to disrupt the hard working Team 5 from being competent. Kappa
Honestly guys it's probably just a combo of what he said and a disagreement with how the game's being financially managed
I doubt if any grown up person, let alone someone at Blizzard, gives a flying hoot about the little bed setters who are upset about Shudderwock.
