Unfortunately this is pretty much a subjective question I'm afraid. You'll likely get a whole variety of different opinion-drive answers.
Suffice to say, the game has grown over the last couple of years, and it is about to change dramatically in April once more, so it's possibly a good time to get back in for that very reason - you'll have more chance to catch up now than in a couple of expansions time.
Fun is relative. Lots of people are having loads of fun. Lots of people are still finding things to complain about. The salt thread continues from strength to strength. I think there's nothing to worry about - the game is still growing strong and shows no sign of dying - so it's not a pointless investment to return.
Whether you enjoy yourself.... well, that's entirely up to you ;-)
How's hearthstone right now? Is it fun? Do you like the meta? Is it worth coming back you think?
I recommend if you have a big enough collection go play Wild. The meta there is relatively static and you don't really need the Year of the Raven expansion card beside Genn Greymane and Baku the Mooneater. Although Year of the Mammoth is absolutely vital for decks in Wild.

I agree that any opinion is subjective, but I'd add that I think the game population IS shrinking. Whether or not that consitutes 'dying' is, again, subjective, because there are still many people playing, but I definitely feel like the game is on a slow downward trajectory.
In my opinion standard is at the worst state it's been at in years. I'm holding on till April hoping rotations and a new expansion makes the game enjoyable again.
Dumbest thing is Secrets and coin into Emerald Spellstone on turn 5. They nerfed it to 6 mana and it's still about the worst part of Hearthstone right now. Sure you can play fast decks, but get ready for Huntertopia and OTK spells to face for 60 damage a turn from other classes. Oh yeah, Druid has 1 deck that isn't dumpster, so there's that.
So it's either play broken af Hunter, OTK/Mechathun, or super aggro atm.
Because there are so many cards in standard right now, there are a lot of fun things you can do. Controls deck are not the strongest they have ever been but they are present. You can make odd control mage and warrior and also normal control mage and warrior. There are also good agro, midrange, and otk decks. Unfortunately, a lot of classes are struggling to stay in the meta.

Proof?
The opposite was true as recently as Boomsday, and the latest financials haven't been released. So . . . what?

Helpful Clarification on Forbidden Topics for Hearthstone Forums:
Enjoying Americans winning in the Olympics is forbidden because it is political. A 14 plus page discussion of state-sponsored lawsuits against a multi-national corporation based on harassment, discrimination, and wrongful death allegations is apparently not political enough to raise an issue.
I would say yes return and start gathering gold and dust for April, craft cards that are going to the Hall of Fame golden to get double the amount of dust you gathered, and when the new expansion hits and year of the Mammoth rotates buy whatever packs necessary (10 out of each one of 4 standard sets then) with the gold you gathered, and craft a tier 2 deck (avoid tier 1 because they get nerfed often) and then judge the game for yourself in it's newest (most fresh) iteration .
You could start playing in April after the rotation although having a push before gold and dust wise is better and will give you a better picture of the game then.
If you have a large Wild collection, make sure to get the guaranteed Legendary in first 10 packs from Un'goro,Frozen Throne and Kobolds (2 for Kobolds with Marin the Fox ) sets before rotation if you care to play in Wild at a certain point.
Also play KFT solo adventure to get the Guaranteed Death Knight Legendary from first floor.
No, not worth coming back right now. Wait for the rotation in April and see if the new expansion fixes the problems of the meta right now. The meta is not very difficult to climb up to rank 5 because most of the decks are not very competitive specially the OTK and combo decks. They are easy wins most of the time once you know how to counter them. Problem is yes, you win and climb but there's no fun. The matches are not as interesting as they were in the past. I play less HS and I hope that things will change in April.
I haven't been playing for past 1,5-2 years.

Yes it’s probably shrinking as all games should be as time goes on. But it still has a massive playerbase.

The game is still fun. The level of play has gone down within the years. I may be more critical as I age up also.
