(For the card that is never played in Standard until the final expansion/adventure before it goes to Wild)
Remember Djinni of Zephyrs? A League of Explorers card that never saw play, then suddenly got red hot with Inner Fire Priest decks that noticed combo potential with Potion of Madness – but within a month it was relegated to Wild?
Talk about finding fame in the last moment.
So we’re at that time in Hearthstone with the cards rotating, and I was wondering what was this outgoing year’s Djinni of Zephyrs card.
The star card of a meme Priest deck, which made the rounds on YouTube highlights in January. This oddball card from the Mean Streets of Gadgetzan finally shined and had potential to ruin highlander decks. But that went south in Standard, however, after the Raza the Chained nerf in February (although it more likely ran its course as an expensive, tough to play meme deck). Its legacy may not be finished; a similar Priest deck has recently surfaced using another meme card, King Togwaggle.
With Silver Hand Paladin becoming pallies’ aggro of choice over murlocs recently, these two rarely seen Whispers of the Old Gods cards now pop up regularly. Steward allows the 1/1s to survive for more buffs, while the once clunky Stand allows for a quick fill of the board, usually followed by a Crystal Lion, late-game Lightfused Stegodon or Unidentified Maul play.
I would choose Weasel, even though its use has petered out.
Who would be your pick? One of these three cards or another outgoing card from One Night in Karazhan, Whispers of the Old Gods or the Mean Streets of Gadgetzan?
Steward of Darkshire by far. Djinni was used plenty in fringe decks before breaking into the meta as it was recognized as a powerful tool. Steward was in a very similar situation. It was an incredibly high power level card that just didn't have the right deck to build around it.
There are many cards that see play after a future expansion release another key card to make a nice deck around. Like for example Secret/Burn mage - Kabal Lackey, Medivh's Valet, Kabal Crystal Runner. This deck and cards became a thing after the release of Aluneth and Explosive Runes with the KnC expansion.
Blizzard / T5 are working 1-2 expansions ahead and some synergies or tier 1 decks with WW cards may not seem so appealing now, but they will be meta-defining in the future, once more cards in the same direction come together with the release with the second and third expansions later this year.

Candidate No. 1: Weasel Tunneler

Candidates No. 2 and 3: Steward of Darkshire and Stand Against Darkness

No Aviana?
I think I ran across Aviana a bit before Gadgetzan's release last year. From what I recall, it was in Astral Communion decks in Standard play.

Lock and Load. It wasn't used until the Yog n Load deck in late Whispers (or early kara idk)
I think he’s referring to the cards that were playable during the Year of the Mammoth.
