I am a Mage fan and I have noticed some cards that caught my attention on the recent expansion. First Font of Power and then Apexis Blast I have to say that I enjoy decks that are not quite in the meta but they are extremely fan to play. Could anyone see a future only mage deck being viable and actually playable? Cause the idea sounds very interesting to exploit, at least for me!
More than believing it, I want it. I come back to play hearthstone every 5 or 6 months and leave disappointed, I miss the good times of Tempo Mage or even Burst Mage.
Somewhat related question: do you think Raid the Sky Temple belongs in spell Mage? I've noticed that many meta decks are not running it, but not sure why...is it really not worth the turn 1 tempo loss?
I'm not sure. I haven't tried it in my deck yet. I was thinking having both Amazing Reno and Raid the Sky Temple would be counter productive. I can't bring myself to remove Reno.
Plus you have to consider that it takes up a starting card spot which affects early game tempo and options.
I enjoy running it, certainly more useful in this than in Highlander for sure. I have at times wondered if Apexis Blast is much reward for playing Spell only though. Font of Poweris more often a big let down for me RnG wise. I do hope next expansion brings 1 or 2 more tools to the archtype.
Ideally I prefer to Play The Amazing Reno first before achieving quest, but that's rare.
I play the Spell-tacular deck recipe and add a Yogg Box and replace the 8 mana freeze and summon spell and having a ton of fun and am climbing great with it. Praying for continued support moving forward

Turn 1 tempo loss is not the reason for this crap don't see play.
The reason is play with one card less vs a very agressive DH meta, it is suicide, you never have a chance to get the value back because for some reason they put the insane requirement of play 10 spells (if draw or get instead of play will be ok).
In the point you can complete the quest, use your hero power many times to get value from the quest you already win or lose anyway, plus, in a very slow control deck the Reno hero card do a better job than that without ruining your starting hand.
I feel like the Netherwind Portal is stronger than the Apexis Blast because the minions in the pool of 4 are very good at standard. Mage minions are very good but the only problem is that they are situational or need some synergy to work. I have not tried it but the concept is very interesting to have only spells on the deck, perhaps putting 2 or 3 minions on the deck is recommended but it is a very bad idea, I do not know why I think it would be incredible to put little minions, obviously destroys Apexis Blast and Font of Power.
I saw some spell mage earlier (and I tried it myself since I opened the new legendary from a pack) but not anymore.
I might be wrong but the archetipe is very weak right now, not because of the meta, it just doesn't have a win condition.
It can generate a bunch of midrange minions on board while controlling/freezing the opponent, and that's it, this isn't enough to win. Sometimes you win by randomly generating some good minion from font of power, like kalegos... Then it's just better to play a deck with good minions in it!

Netherwind Portal can get you a 4 cost minion you can attack with on your turn 2 occassionally if you start with a coin.
Both of these spell have high variance on the value of the minion found, particularly since they don't trigger battlecries. But I like and play them both.

I still see it out there though.

Pretty much every Mage I encounter is running Spell Mage—kinda annoying. At least I always know exactly what cards they're playing.

That's what happens when other mages are not good vs aggro or too expensive.
I still encounter some Highlander Mage too. Probably in a 2-to-1 ratio (Spell vs Highlander)

It was a cool idea but it needs more support.

Putting creatures in a spell only deck is bad trust me did it and I sat with font in my hand for the whole game
I agree. Even playing Astromancer Solarian in a moment of idiocy turned out to be ruinous when Prime slipped into my deck.
