Greetings, travellers, I'm Subrezon, a Legend player from Germany. Creative deckbuilding is what I enjoy the most, and my joy peak is always before a new expansion. So here I am, with Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2! As with MSoG, I will build one deck for each class that is both interesting and potentially good. I will generally avoid self-building decks, like ones based around Quests or Elementals. But, Open the Waygate is sooo incredibly inspiring, that I ignored this rule for this one! Greet your new champion - OTK Exodia Mage!
What is this deck?
This deck relies on getting a combo that wins you the game. No, seriously. If no Ice Block is present for the enemy, he is dead as soon as you pull this one off. The combo is:
- Use 6 cards, generated by other cards like Shimmering Tempest, Primordial Glyph, or Babbling Book to get the Time Warp card into your hand. You also combine Shimmering Tempest with Steam Surger to get Flame Geysers.
- Play 2x Sorcerer's Apprentice for 4 mana, then use 1x Molten Reflection for 2 mana to get one more apprentice, then play Time Warp for 2 mana. (You float 2 mana, but it doesn't matter)
- Play Archmage Antonidas for 7 mana and another Molten Reflection on the apprentice for 1 mana to get 4x Sorcerer's Apprentice in total + a Fireball.
- Enjoy limitless Fireballs.
You stall the game using the removal from your deck and generated spells, cycle towards your combo and finish the game instantly with Exodia!
Why this deck?
Because OTKs are awesome! And because I've done Secret Mage already before MSoG... didn't shoot that time, but I hope this will!
Is this going to be competitive?
Maybe. This is a very crude version of the deck, it is very hard to tell how much card generation should be in it and how to balance draw/removal in it. But fully polished this deck can actually be a control-style deck with a reliable win condition vs. Jades! And all other control decks. Except self...
So, I hope you enjoyed this one, so stay tuned for more! Don't forget to drop a +1 and to check out all of Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2!
Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2:
Note 1: there are some cards that can be used in this deck, that are not in this list. Loot Hoarder, Novice Engineer and Kabal Chemist are things being suggested to me. These are probably good enough for this deck, I will test the upon release.
Update 1: suddenly, a fact that Flame Geysers generated by Steam Surgers proc off Shimmering Tempest and work towards the quest struck me and I made this deck anew (kinda). Some changes:
- -1 Cabalist's Tome: too many cards in hand, too clunky to use
- -2 Mana Bind: Spells aren't likely to be used against you when you have no board (thanks to @kuroneko2370 for pointing that out)
- -1 Arcanologist due to the smaller number of Secrets
- -1 Acolyte of Pain: clunky cycle
- -1 Frost Nova: a little too situational, plus a lot of removal can be gotten through spell generation
- +1 Ice Block for survivability and Secret count for the remaining Arcanologist
- +2 Loot Hoarders for draw, chosen over Novice Engineers due to smaller removal count
- +1 Shimmering Tempest, +2 Steam Surger as the new and more consistent spell generation
Update 2: front page! Under "All" category! Astonishing!
Thanks to you guys for all the support, criticism and attention you gave this deck!
Just played against this deck with a purify priest. I had the game by turn 7 or so I thought but after 7 more turns of having my whole board frozen and enemy hero being immune I get an endless stream of fireballs in the face and loose. I looked it up just wondering if this is really a viable combo or if it was a freak of nature card draw luck that made it work that one time. It was definitely one of my most frustrating losses.
0/8 - absolytely shit. Version with cabalists tomes will be better.
I'm not having much luck with this list.
I'm 0-11
Got any tips on how to get a bit more success?
I keep dying before being able to assemble the combo.
Hm... i'm 10-4 with this deck.
But main archetipe is Freeze Mage.. so, mb i have more expirience playng decks like that one.
I have only one advise - you need to draw(do not keep parts of combo on mulligan, and try not to keep arcanologist or bubbling book. U have to make your deck thinner with every turn.)
Otherwise - learn this deck. You have to teach every luttle thing about this deck. Sometimes u have to go risky and place every single card on table waiting for topdeck, or to deal another 9-12 dmg from extra turn.
btw. sry for bad eng.
Maybe that version will help you a bit
I don't see the point of the steam surger, and My list isn't too different from above.
In one game I had drawn most of my deck, and I'd not completed the quest yet, but had most of the combo in hand.
and in other games i've not drawn enough cards yet.
I feel like I am mulliganing correctly, except that I've usually been keeping a book if I see it.
this is my list.
and I just had a game where Archmage antonidas was the last card in my deck, I assemble the combo and cast time warp, then die to fatigue.
0-5 the combo is too slow, you need to draw a lot the giants version is better
Very first game with this deck, everything looking great, getting combo together...dirty rats my Antonidus :( game over...
Him: The end is coming!
Me: I ain't talkin!
Him: You require my assistance?
Him: You win this one.
Why the heck do you need Frostbolt in this deck?!
This deck just isn't consistent enough to climb. Yea its a instant win when u get the combo off but it's just not reliable. After 30+ games i won maybe 10.
The combo itself just requires too much cards i think. There's been numerous times where i just can't seem to get all 5 cards needed and there's like 2-3 cards left in my deck where one of the 5 is there.
I do think the exodia deck is better then the giants. But both of them i don't feel are strong enough to climb. Dirty Rat also messed up both decks.
Unlike Freeze Mage in which you were just stalling the game until you have the combo with this one you have to gather 5 cards, cycling cards and all these while generating extra cards nut also keep an empty spot for the quest.
It's a fun deck though and definitely not an easy to play correctly.
But it's the most boring to play against..
Just had a game with 3 Frost Novas and 3 Blizzards, combined with a Flamestrike, then he threw the combo.
So I just came to attack twice. Big and interesting game -.-
Who playes such shit? Go play with marbles if you like to play alone...
enjoy playing against pirate warriors, face hunters and quest rogues. Those decks are fun and interactive as well!
Yeah i wonder who at blizzard thought it was a good idea to give mage another four goes at 2board freezes with the glyph and the 2/1. I just played a game as Sherazin rogue showing off all kinds of cool stuff only to see it frozen 8 turns in a row. 8 board freezes. back to back. Might as well print Strip Mine/Crucible for mage next set.
[edit toned down the tone a bit ;)]
wtf do you do in a mirror
As others pointed out Steam Surger is a dead and very expensive card, you could play a 3 cards instead of playing one for 4 mana.
Also my humble opinion: Blizzard and Frost Nova should be swapped, 2 Frost Nova and 1 Blizzard, you don't care about clearing the board much but stalling it and 6 mana is too much, Frost Nova also it's easier to combo with Doomsayer.
If it works for you it's fine of course.
This is my variant
- 1x Blizzard | +1x Frost Nova
- 1x Acolyte of Pain | +1x Novice Engineer
- 2x Steam Surger | + 2x Dirty Rat or + 1x Dirty Rat + 1x Cabalist's Tome
Dirty Rat work wonders against all Quests and especially Rogue ones.
Cabalist's Tome is indeed clunky and might clog your hand but i found it very useful a lot of times so i put it back.
