Greetings, travellers, I'm Subrezon, a Legend player from Germany. Creative deckbuilding is what I enjoy the most, and my joy peak is always before a new expansion. So here I am, with Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2! As with MSoG, I will build one deck for each class that is both interesting and potentially good. I will generally avoid self-building decks, like ones based around Quests or Elementals. But, Open the Waygate is sooo incredibly inspiring, that I ignored this rule for this one! Greet your new champion - OTK Exodia Mage!
What is this deck?
This deck relies on getting a combo that wins you the game. No, seriously. If no Ice Block is present for the enemy, he is dead as soon as you pull this one off. The combo is:
- Use 6 cards, generated by other cards like Shimmering Tempest, Primordial Glyph, or Babbling Book to get the Time Warp card into your hand. You also combine Shimmering Tempest with Steam Surger to get Flame Geysers.
- Play 2x Sorcerer's Apprentice for 4 mana, then use 1x Molten Reflection for 2 mana to get one more apprentice, then play Time Warp for 2 mana. (You float 2 mana, but it doesn't matter)
- Play Archmage Antonidas for 7 mana and another Molten Reflection on the apprentice for 1 mana to get 4x Sorcerer's Apprentice in total + a Fireball.
- Enjoy limitless Fireballs.
You stall the game using the removal from your deck and generated spells, cycle towards your combo and finish the game instantly with Exodia!
Why this deck?
Because OTKs are awesome! And because I've done Secret Mage already before MSoG... didn't shoot that time, but I hope this will!
Is this going to be competitive?
Maybe. This is a very crude version of the deck, it is very hard to tell how much card generation should be in it and how to balance draw/removal in it. But fully polished this deck can actually be a control-style deck with a reliable win condition vs. Jades! And all other control decks. Except self...
So, I hope you enjoyed this one, so stay tuned for more! Don't forget to drop a +1 and to check out all of Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2!
Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2:
Note 1: there are some cards that can be used in this deck, that are not in this list. Loot Hoarder, Novice Engineer and Kabal Chemist are things being suggested to me. These are probably good enough for this deck, I will test the upon release.
Update 1: suddenly, a fact that Flame Geysers generated by Steam Surgers proc off Shimmering Tempest and work towards the quest struck me and I made this deck anew (kinda). Some changes:
- -1 Cabalist's Tome: too many cards in hand, too clunky to use
- -2 Mana Bind: Spells aren't likely to be used against you when you have no board (thanks to @kuroneko2370 for pointing that out)
- -1 Arcanologist due to the smaller number of Secrets
- -1 Acolyte of Pain: clunky cycle
- -1 Frost Nova: a little too situational, plus a lot of removal can be gotten through spell generation
- +1 Ice Block for survivability and Secret count for the remaining Arcanologist
- +2 Loot Hoarders for draw, chosen over Novice Engineers due to smaller removal count
- +1 Shimmering Tempest, +2 Steam Surger as the new and more consistent spell generation
Update 2: front page! Under "All" category! Astonishing!
Thanks to you guys for all the support, criticism and attention you gave this deck!
I really enjoy this version better.
How does this deck win vs any aggressive decks? I don't understand.. I win vs almost every control warrior, priest, hunter, shaman, but the moment I face any aggro it looks like this
Even with lucky draws, the chances of drawing exactly Antonidas, 2x Sorcerer, 2x reflection AND playing 6 discover'ish spells before you die on like turn 8-11 is just beyond me..
What Abou vulcanic potion?
I suggest -2 Steam Surger and +1 Cabalist's Tome and +1 Card Draw card to cycle through the deck faster
Steam Surger is a completely dead card draw and extremely unrealiable... you're better of swapping it out for Kabal Courier which is 10x more reliable.
Well the risk is that Kabal Courier won't give you a spell, only minions so I'm not that sure.
just go the full card draw + tome version, it works 10x better
This deck sucks because it's Standard. Wild is recommended. Mad Scientists instead of the Arcaneologis, Thaurisan, Antique Healbots, echo instead of the Molten Reflection, Belchers for taunts, Volcanic Potion for early game clear. Ez pz lemon squeezie
The idea behind this deck is cool, but it lacks too much consistency.
I'm 0-3 with this deck so far, and those are the problems that I faced:
_ Too slow in the overall (I faced a Discardlock, a Questrogue and a beasthunter, and even with the Ice Blocks I got crushed anyway. Since there is no way to gain health (RIP Reno) they make you gain 1 turn each, but in the most of the cases it is not enough);
_ Lacks board control (Doomsayers are cool, but they require a mass freeze to work and even then they could be countered, maybe adding Flamestrikes could help);
_ Not enough card draw (Even with intellect and Acolyte it's just not enough to gather ALL the pieces of the combo in time);
_ Lacks ways to complete the quest (In the past cases, even in the case that I had all the pieces of the combo, I was still at 2-3/6 spells casted for the quest).
I'd really like to play with this, I hope anyone could fix this deck

The moment you've said this i was sure u have no clue how to play the deck .
I have a list that I have had success with recently if you want to try it: http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/796978-exodia-mage-ttk
Thank you! I tried this list and I got 2 wins out of 3 games so far.
I admit I was skeptical at first, since this didn't run Doomsayers that I thought fundamental for a deck like this. But I found that the addition of other freeze spells is pretty much better, since the aim is that your opponent pops the Ice Blocks as late as possible. In addition, the Coldlights are very useful as new source of draw, with them is much easier to gather all the pieces of the combo.
Good job!
Thank You!
Or vs any deck that plays minions with 1-3 mana cost
You mean this deck isn't the ultimate?! Got thoroughly thrashed by it. Guess I'm glad I didn't waste dust on it.
I lost 9 games before I ended winning my first. My score was 1-9. Then, I ended up consistently winning 2 games for each 1 loss. The change that I made was adding a Cabalist's Tome instead of Acolyte of Pain. I think this is a strong deck, but also really difficult. You need to devote a lot of time to get good with it
This deck is super fun!
Basically a Freeze mage with a guaranteed OTK... Blizzard please.
