Greetings, travellers, I'm Subrezon, a Legend player from Germany. Creative deckbuilding is what I enjoy the most, and my joy peak is always before a new expansion. So here I am, with Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2! As with MSoG, I will build one deck for each class that is both interesting and potentially good. I will generally avoid self-building decks, like ones based around Quests or Elementals. But, Open the Waygate is sooo incredibly inspiring, that I ignored this rule for this one! Greet your new champion - OTK Exodia Mage!
What is this deck?
This deck relies on getting a combo that wins you the game. No, seriously. If no Ice Block is present for the enemy, he is dead as soon as you pull this one off. The combo is:
- Use 6 cards, generated by other cards like Shimmering Tempest, Primordial Glyph, or Babbling Book to get the Time Warp card into your hand. You also combine Shimmering Tempest with Steam Surger to get Flame Geysers.
- Play 2x Sorcerer's Apprentice for 4 mana, then use 1x Molten Reflection for 2 mana to get one more apprentice, then play Time Warp for 2 mana. (You float 2 mana, but it doesn't matter)
- Play Archmage Antonidas for 7 mana and another Molten Reflection on the apprentice for 1 mana to get 4x Sorcerer's Apprentice in total + a Fireball.
- Enjoy limitless Fireballs.
You stall the game using the removal from your deck and generated spells, cycle towards your combo and finish the game instantly with Exodia!
Why this deck?
Because OTKs are awesome! And because I've done Secret Mage already before MSoG... didn't shoot that time, but I hope this will!
Is this going to be competitive?
Maybe. This is a very crude version of the deck, it is very hard to tell how much card generation should be in it and how to balance draw/removal in it. But fully polished this deck can actually be a control-style deck with a reliable win condition vs. Jades! And all other control decks. Except self...
So, I hope you enjoyed this one, so stay tuned for more! Don't forget to drop a +1 and to check out all of Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2!
Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2:
Note 1: there are some cards that can be used in this deck, that are not in this list. Loot Hoarder, Novice Engineer and Kabal Chemist are things being suggested to me. These are probably good enough for this deck, I will test the upon release.
Update 1: suddenly, a fact that Flame Geysers generated by Steam Surgers proc off Shimmering Tempest and work towards the quest struck me and I made this deck anew (kinda). Some changes:
- -1 Cabalist's Tome: too many cards in hand, too clunky to use
- -2 Mana Bind: Spells aren't likely to be used against you when you have no board (thanks to @kuroneko2370 for pointing that out)
- -1 Arcanologist due to the smaller number of Secrets
- -1 Acolyte of Pain: clunky cycle
- -1 Frost Nova: a little too situational, plus a lot of removal can be gotten through spell generation
- +1 Ice Block for survivability and Secret count for the remaining Arcanologist
- +2 Loot Hoarders for draw, chosen over Novice Engineers due to smaller removal count
- +1 Shimmering Tempest, +2 Steam Surger as the new and more consistent spell generation
Update 2: front page! Under "All" category! Astonishing!
Thanks to you guys for all the support, criticism and attention you gave this deck!
What am I missing? that's 12 mana isn't it???Too few elementals to run steam surger imo.
Yeah it kinda has to get the ball rolling. If at worse you have to steam surger then steamsurger, its bad value but not game losing. There is always that 50/50 that you go second and can shimmering tempest turn 2 and coin steam surger on turn 3 to get the ball rolling. In a way, 50% of the time, it works 100% of the time!
Mana Bindis a very solid card to play before you drop the doomsayer combo. At worst your getting yourself a soft removal spell that costs 0 to deal with their board, which can't attack you the turn of it anyway because they have been frozen.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see the 1 floated mana. You play 2x sorcerer's apprentice (4 mana), 1x Molten reflection (4-2=2 Mana), 1x Sorcerer's Apprentice (2 mana) and 1x Time Warp (5-3=2 Mana). 4+2+2+2 = 10.
The third and fourth Apprentice are directly summoned by Molten Reflection, u don't have to play them from your hand. 2x apprentice (4 mana) + 1 molten (2mana) + 1 molten (1 mana) + Time Wrap (1 mana) = 8 mana total.
3rd Sorcerer's Apprentice summons, so you don't have to play it from hand
so it's 2x sorcerer's apprentice (4 mana), 1x Molten reflection (4-2=2 Mana) and 1x Time Warp (5-3=2 Mana), 4+2+2=8
'OTK's are awesome' This is technically a two turn kill using the extra turn from time warp...
The deck looks really good, i'm going to try all the possible versions of it as the expansion comes out. However, on this particular list i think i would make the following changes:
-1 Steam Surger +1 Cabalist's Tome. You can't count on the Surger to trigger everytime that's why i think maybe two of them is risky. The tome grants you not one but three spells without any condition to trigger.
-2 Loot Hoarder +2 Novice Engineer. Basically because it's instadraw. With Hoarder the problem is that they can play around it, can be stealed, etc.
-1 Ice Block? +1Flamestrike/Frost Nova/Acolyte of Pain. I don't think Ice Block is as needed/useful in this deck as it is in Freeze mage. You could maybe replace one of them for more removal or cycle.
Of course it all depends on how the meta will be after the expansion, so we'll have to wait and then refine the deck with the appropiate techs as it evolves.
Why do u think a 2nd ice block is needed here? I actually think this deck doesn't even "need" one.
Hey Subrezon :)
Fantastic deck idea - I am playing Exodia Mage in Wild at the moment.
I was thinking Hemet, Jungle Hunter could be really awesome in this deck for when you have drawn your Sorcerer's Apprentices and complete Open the Waygate early.
Thoughts?

I feel like this type of deck needs more cycle cards like Loot Hoarder or Novice Engineer
i was trying to think about a way without the giants, because there are too many new taunts, so it can be a problem. Your deck solves the problem, the giant deck uses 3 cards for the combo, this one uses 5 but it has unlimited damage and cannot be stopped by taunts.
how about -1 Shimmering Tempest and +1 Burgly Bully ? Because the coin does count for the quest, also that card doesn't seen good
I think that your change is better than the Burgly Bully, you gave the "shitty" card one more usaage, that is to trigger the second elemental + added more minions to fight for the board, now with 8 possible speels outside of the deck and the 50/50 chance of get the coin i think that is a good number to work with (maybe too much, will see).
Also, the second Ice Block beeing the only secret together with the [card]Arcanologist [/card] will likely give us more time to pull off the combo, also make our cycle more consistent.
Looking forward to test it out :)
