Greetings, travellers, I'm Subrezon, a Legend player from Germany. Creative deckbuilding is what I enjoy the most, and my joy peak is always before a new expansion. So here I am, with Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2! As with MSoG, I will build one deck for each class that is both interesting and potentially good. I will generally avoid self-building decks, like ones based around Quests or Elementals. But, Open the Waygate is sooo incredibly inspiring, that I ignored this rule for this one! Greet your new champion - OTK Exodia Mage!
What is this deck?
This deck relies on getting a combo that wins you the game. No, seriously. If no Ice Block is present for the enemy, he is dead as soon as you pull this one off. The combo is:
- Use 6 cards, generated by other cards like Shimmering Tempest, Primordial Glyph, or Babbling Book to get the Time Warp card into your hand. You also combine Shimmering Tempest with Steam Surger to get Flame Geysers.
- Play 2x Sorcerer's Apprentice for 4 mana, then use 1x Molten Reflection for 2 mana to get one more apprentice, then play Time Warp for 2 mana. (You float 2 mana, but it doesn't matter)
- Play Archmage Antonidas for 7 mana and another Molten Reflection on the apprentice for 1 mana to get 4x Sorcerer's Apprentice in total + a Fireball.
- Enjoy limitless Fireballs.
You stall the game using the removal from your deck and generated spells, cycle towards your combo and finish the game instantly with Exodia!
Why this deck?
Because OTKs are awesome! And because I've done Secret Mage already before MSoG... didn't shoot that time, but I hope this will!
Is this going to be competitive?
Maybe. This is a very crude version of the deck, it is very hard to tell how much card generation should be in it and how to balance draw/removal in it. But fully polished this deck can actually be a control-style deck with a reliable win condition vs. Jades! And all other control decks. Except self...
So, I hope you enjoyed this one, so stay tuned for more! Don't forget to drop a +1 and to check out all of Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2!
Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2:
Note 1: there are some cards that can be used in this deck, that are not in this list. Loot Hoarder, Novice Engineer and Kabal Chemist are things being suggested to me. These are probably good enough for this deck, I will test the upon release.
Update 1: suddenly, a fact that Flame Geysers generated by Steam Surgers proc off Shimmering Tempest and work towards the quest struck me and I made this deck anew (kinda). Some changes:
- -1 Cabalist's Tome: too many cards in hand, too clunky to use
- -2 Mana Bind: Spells aren't likely to be used against you when you have no board (thanks to @kuroneko2370 for pointing that out)
- -1 Arcanologist due to the smaller number of Secrets
- -1 Acolyte of Pain: clunky cycle
- -1 Frost Nova: a little too situational, plus a lot of removal can be gotten through spell generation
- +1 Ice Block for survivability and Secret count for the remaining Arcanologist
- +2 Loot Hoarders for draw, chosen over Novice Engineers due to smaller removal count
- +1 Shimmering Tempest, +2 Steam Surger as the new and more consistent spell generation
Update 2: front page! Under "All" category! Astonishing!
Thanks to you guys for all the support, criticism and attention you gave this deck!
i just love it. Great idea, funny deck (i like control decks) +1 from me for sure :D good job man
Maybe it is just me, but this really has to be the most boring deck I have ever played in my time..
Don't worry, it really is just you :)
I've altered this quiet a bit and have been having pretty consistant wins now. Here is the decklist I am using:
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/42028-babbling-book x 2
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/55551-open-the-waygate x 1
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/177-frostbolt x 2
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/55552-primordial-glyph x 2
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/55561-shimmering-tempest x 2
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/4-sorcerers-apprentice x 2
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/489-arcane-intellect x 2
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/49-frost-nova x 1
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/28-ice-block x 2
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/55553-molten-reflection x 2
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/276-blizzard x 1
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/220-archmage-antonidas x 1
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/467-doomsayer x 1
http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/428-acolyte-of-pain x 1
Now for the changes I made:
I took out the arcanologist, steam surgers, Thalanos (because I don't have him), the loot horders, 1 acolyte of pain, 1 Blizzard, and 1 doomsayer.
I replaced them with: 2 x kabal chemist, 1 x Cabalist's Tome, 1 x Elise the Trailblazer, 1 x flamestrike, 2 x Arcane Giant and 1 x Yogg-Saron just for fun.
I would suggest replacing the Yogg with Thalanos if you have him, and replace Elise with a 2nd Cabalist Tome if you don't have her.
Let me know what you guys think, so far I've won around 10 straight games with this deck. Also I don't know how to link cards properly on here, as this is my 1st post :P
cool concept but does not win against anything. probably has like a 1% win rate against any other deck
This style of deck will forever be in my deck slots just because of the insane BM you get to do when you do pull it off. Fireball everything on the opponent's side, fireball yourself, fireball your Antonidas, Fireball your crap, fireball everything until you win.
Unless you run Volcanic Potion ;)
The first two times i played this deck my archmage didn't show until the last two cards - not really fond of this deck.
This deck gets demolished by anything currently on ladder. Hand becomes too clunky with unusable spells. Ice blocks are fine stoppers to save your life but with zero healing it struggles.
Tweaked this deck list and yeah, this is so much better than the Giant/Alex version. The only issue with the deck is that you feel completely out of control for 90% of the game, then if you've drawn the right cards, you win. My last game was against Zoo (which is making a resurgence) and I was freezing and blizzarding just to stay alive (never drew a Doomsayer). He pops my Ice Block. I draw my Tome, play it and the second Ice Block. He pops that. I realize that with the Reflection I got off Tome I've won. Apprentice, Reflection, Reflection, Freezing Potion to get Time Warp. Play Warp. Ant. Win. So easily could have been a loss.
This deck NEEDS Tome. Playing without at least one is a mistake.
Haven't played combo decks for quite a while, took me 2 games to get used to, and then it's just great fun.
Mulligan spell generation cards, once quest is completed, or you already have the spells in your hand, it's OK to throw out Steam Surger without effect. Sometimes you'll get Primal Glyph into Molten Reflection, which is a huge bonus.
The best part about this deck vs. Arcane x2 + Alex is it won't be restricted by armor and taunts, and only takes little extra effort to pull off.
Also, this deck should've been named ... ... "Aha!"
This deck has too much hype, and the sparse elemental synergy will leave you with a steam Surger just chilling in your hand most of the time. I've played about 5 games with it and it's very inconsistent. Your opponent usually outruns you to the combo (specifically Crystal Rogue or Pirate Warrior), and you have to be really lucky with theIce Blocks. When it works, it's fun, but more often than not, you'll be scrambling to pop your quest and can barely set up. The setup with Arcane Giant and Alextrasa is more effective tbh.
i think so.
i believe that x1 cabalist tome will help quest finish easier.
(though its useless against aggro)
But Steam Surger will create another one.
It just additional really, and even without elemental, 5/4 is pretty decent to have on board especially focus of this deck is to make sure the board clear, before the combo.
The only problem with this deck is the same with Freeze Mage.
the last piece of TTK always at the bottom of the deck.
So you have to cycle through the ENTIRE DECK to win the game.
and include that the TTK combo cards take 5 slot on your hand so sometimes you only have 5-7 card max.
but yeah when you get all your combo (especially when you draw through the entire deck) it's feel pretty goooooood.
Requires too much setup in order to pull the combo off, 5 card combo of 2x Sorcerer's Apprentice, 2x Molten Reflection and 1x Archmage Antonidas, making the hand extremely clunky and almost impossible to include Cabalist's Tome due to overdrawing.
I would suggest you play the minion version instead which is easier to set up, requiring only 2x Arcane Giant and 1x Alexstrasza for more consistency
Sure I agree with your point on having infinite damage, but I'm looking at the deck on how to maximize the chances of winning. If you want to go for the memes go ahead :P
Edit : Thought about it but this deck does have a niche use for its infinite damage potential to take down taunt warriors with hell lot of armours (freeze mage used to have super low win rates against control/taunt warriors)
Doesn't work very well as an OTK now does it ?
Refer to this :
Turn 1 : 2x Sorcerer's Apprentice = 4 mana , 1x Molten Reflection = 2 mana, 1x Time Warp = 2 mana
Total : 3x Sorcerer's Apprentice, reduces cost of spells by 3
Turn 2 : 1x Archmage Antonidas = 7 mana, 3x Fireball = 3 mana
Total: 18 Damage
If you only do 18 damage, that's not really an OTK deck is it ? This deck lacks the ability to reduce the opponent's health to 18 in the first place as it is a control deck with weak minions. However, the Alex Combo is a confirmed OTK in the case of no taunt which can be avoided as you control when you want to take the extra turn to OTK (unless they are playing new handlock with lots of taunts). Furthermore, this deck will probably lose to the 'Quest Priest' deck most of the time as they will be set at 40 HP (unless exodia occurs)
you have miss some point
3 fireball + 3 Socc + 1 ping
= 18 + 9 +1 = 28 dmg (without a taunt)
Arcane Giant and Alexstrasza is good combination as well, but both deck got weak point. As for Arcane Giant, its a minion, easily stop by taunt or any big removal. Fireball, regardless whatever on board still hit face.
