Hey Hearthstoners!
I have seen Reynad's dragon priest the other day and it inspired me to build a dragon priest based on his list. Reynad is a very skilled player and what I noticed is that he is very skilled in piloting tempo decks such as zoo. When i played his version of the priest deck, it did not suit my style since it is more tempo based and once you lose board, you cannot recover, so I built a dragon priest that is more suitable to my style and more control based so that even if I lose board, I can have a comeback.
I have reached Legend rank quite quickly with this deck from 0 stars in rank 1 to legend while only losing one game against patron warrior. (The video below explains the card choices and also gameplay video describing how I pilot the deck. It also shows proof of legend.)
UPDATE VIDEO (09/02/2015) :
It is a long video but has interactive buttons to skip between matches so you do not need to watch them all!
BONUS - What to Craft in TGT
Mulligan
There are 3 types of mulligan on ladder and they are: Aggro, Control and Patron Warrior (I know patron gets its own mulligan cause they are that good)
Aggro
Blackwing Technician, northshire cleric, twilight whelp, shrinkmeister, and wyrmrest agent
You want your hand to be aggressive as possible so that you can fend off early aggression.
Definitely if you feel that your hand is strong enough to survive the early game, you can definitely keep mid-game to late-game cards like azure drake, twilight guardian, blackwing corruptor or even chillmaw for instance.
If you do not feel confident then hard mulligan for the cards I stated above.
Usually against paladin or totem shaman, I would keep Mind Control Tech in my opening hand
Control
Twilight whelp (potentially with dragons), blackwing Technician, twilight guardian, wrymrest agent (potentially with dragons) and Shrinkmeister
You will want as much sticky creatures as possible against the control match-up so that you can maintain consistent board control early and start to react against their cards during the mid to late game. Having these sticky creatures can survive common removals such as wrath, death bite, fiery war axe, and rock biter for instance.
Patron
This is probably the worst match-up for priest, but you need to play as aggressive as possible in this match-up so that the game does not stretch out long enough so that they can combo you down in one turn. Patron warriors usually like to keep all their combo pieces until late game again priest since they can't potentially burst them down.
Tips:
Consistently remove their creatures and try not to leave injured minions alive to combo with battle rage.
Play Chillmaw after Thaurissan to prevent combo.
In the early game, patron warrior enjoys playing Acolyte on turn 3 against you because they know they will potentially draw 2 or more cards. In this case
Mulligan is fairly similar to the control match-up
Card Choices
Shrinkmeister - I took out two wild pyromancers for this card is because Shrinkmeister can really help out with trading while also maintaining your creatures on the board and keeping them healthy. Also this card can be synergized with Cabal Shadow Priest and Shadow Word Pain to widen their effect range.
Blackwing Technician - This card is pretty powerful when played on curve and can potentially snowball the game with the dragon synergy.
Vol'jin - Since I took out a lot of dragons for tech cards, this card can replace rend and they serve a similar role in the deck where it is used to take out a threatening creature we cannot handle. Vol'jin has more range than Rend.
Chillmaw - As the meta is solidifying, I believe Chillmaw is a must play in priest as it deals with Paladins quite well and there are a lot of decks with low health minions, so playing this definitely helps against the aggressive match-ups. It also counter patrons, so that is a plus. :)
Lightbomb - Just more AOE to counter secret pally and with the amount of board clear and early game we have in this deck, we have a really high chance to win against secret pally and other aggressive match-ups. Lightbomb is also good to counter dr. boom, mysterious challenger and also patrons.
Sylvanas Windrunner - I just like this card since the priest has so many cards to manipulate her in a way that I can guarantee I steal such as cards like shadow word death and lightbomb.
However, if patron warrior were to rise up again, then Chillmaw will be a great sub instead of holy nova.
Was legend with priest before, so I somewhat know what I am talking about :)
He's really not.
Personal preference and if you don't like it, you really don't need to play it.
Solid deck!
I have both Eydis Darkbane and Fjola Lightbane and replaced them for the Dark Cultist. Even if I can't get value from them, they put so much pressure on the board that your opponent wants to deal with them even faster than the DC, blowing big spells (hexes, fireball, etc)
Confessor Paletress secured me a tons of game where I didnt pulled out Majordomo. Could be even better with x1 Fencing Coach but I don't know what to replace this with. Cut down a Wild Pyromancer.
I'm not a fan of Sylvanas Windrunner, have trouble playing her correctly, replaced her by Vol'jin: a lot more of success.
Finally, cut down a Cabal Shadow Priest for Emperor Thaurissan. ET is just such a big card, your oppenent HAS to deal with it on the turn it's played otherwise you have pretty much won the game. Works great with Paletress also.
Having trouble against other Dragon Priest when they have a better starting hand. I'm good against Warrior, even if it's sometimes a matter of 1-2 dmg. SecretPally are a pain.
**Don't have Ysera yet but it's probably my next card. Dr. Boom does the job for now, great pressure if you have nothing else to play.
**I'm 9-1 with this deck now, I am currently rank 13.
Hey thanks!
I don't have the dust to craft Confessor yet, so until that day comes, I will definitely try her out.
I finally crafted the two sisters, and I believe Lightbane is really not worth playing in this deck, however darkbane has potential. I believe the sisters fit better in a different priest deck that is not with the dragon archtype that I am currently testing out.
I also cut out a cabal shadow priest for another tech card that may help me out in the meta, such as another darkbomb, holy nova or even the black knight.
Sylvanas Windrunner is really a card that players need to learn how to use since she is such a strong card. At first, I never liked her and cut her from every deck, but since she was played in most priest decks, I learnt how to use her and I strongly believe she is one of the strongest legendaries. Tips on how to play her is never play her on an empty board, try to set her up with shadow word death and also have at least 2 or more minions trade with her. This is not set to stone and can vary depending on the situation.
Ysera is definitely a dragon I will recommend crafting ASAP since I believe it is needed in the upcoming meta.
either u are a hater or a facehunter lover
confesser is so good how can she not be used in priest control.
I don't have her yet (Y)
Am I the only one who think that Sylvanas is useless? Really hate this card.
Also. I'm replaced one Cabal Shadow Priest to Dr, Boom and Slyvanas to Confessor Paletress. Is that okay? (P.S. Sorry for my english)
I still believe sylvanas is required in every priest deck, unless you are playing an aggro priest. In a control priest deck, the game goes long enough where you can set her up in almost anyway you like. Whenever I play priest, I would usually save shadow word death and sylvanas on which creature I can control in my opponents deck, such as Ysera or tirion. If I am forced to use shadow word death, then I try to force my opponent to trade atleast 2 creatures onto it, which is value for me. Sylvanas, in my opinion, is the strongest tool that priest can manipulate effectively and just need to be learnt how to play her correctly. I also didn't like her in the beginning, but I began to see she is one of the strongest legendary.
Cabal can also be replace for a tech card you believe that can benefit you in the meta.
I wanted to ask what deck tracker you use (as seen in the image). I tried downloading one recently and it made Hearthstone supper choppy so I got rid of it. Do you have any problems with whichever one you are using?
Hey man, I don't use the deck tracker anymore because it does lag my game now and I do need to record. I believe the one I used in the image was an older version of the tracker, but once it was updated, it caused tremendous lag.
I believe that wild pyro is a must have as well since it is such a clutch card at times. I have a new list in the description and if I believe that it is consistent, I will update the guide on it.
I am currently running a new list and I put the link in the description, if I believe that this list is consistent, I will update the guide on it.
I posted a new list in the description, check it out and tell me if you like it more. I am definitely still running two pyromancers since I believe it is strong in the meta with the paladins going around.
subbed following:
out: Dark Cultists, Cabal Shadowpriest:
in: Velen' s Chosen, Lightbane, Justicar
still want to find place for a second Holy smite
This is starting to look right, all though the standard priest with addition of kvaldir and holy champion is very consistent and can beat the crap out of even control war and handlock
Take a look at my new list in the description, if I believe it to be more consistent, I will update the guide on it.
I have also been trying out a more standard priest build with holy champion, and I believe that deck will be stronger than the dragon priest in the future.
I personally swapped a Cabal for The Black Knight. Dragon Priest is very popular on the ladder, but has very few ways to deal with itself. Also Belchers are kind of anywhere, and don't get me started onTirion Fordring. Seems to be working pretty well, and this is an old favorite card of mine that I'm excited to use again.
Also 1 Pyro and 1 Blackwing Tech works pretty well, since control vs. aggro is pretty 50/50 for me right now.
I have definitely considered to put black knight in the deck since it provides such a huge tempo swing and everyone is running big taunts. I have posted a new list in the description and if I find it to be 10 times better than the current list, I will update the guide.
VERY excited about the Auchenai + Circle! Miss this combo a lot. I'll have to try it out.
Here is what I do not have,
Chillmaw, Ysera, Cabal
I have 1600 dust
I'm choosing between Chillmaw or Ysera.
What should I substitute in for Cabal
Right now Im considering the following change
Craft Chillmaw,
Subs - Chromaggus for Ysera
Voljin for Cabal
I also have Fjola Lightbane
whats your take on
Subs - Lightbane for Cultist
Velen for ???????
