Hearthstone has always been pretty confusing in how dusting and collection goes. All veteran players are now familiar with ncraftables with no middle dot, uncraftable and undisenchantable legendaries, sets rotating and moved to HOF etc.
However, with the introduction of the Core set and Classic mode, this has hit a whole new level:
To illustrate how rediculous it is: How do you explain to someone new to the game the difference between the "legacy", "classic", and "core" sets? There is a lot of overlap, and some cards, like Argent Squire, are exactly the same in all of them. Have anyone here memorized which cards in which version belong in each one of them? If you didn't play back in 2014 when "classic" was live, well done, you are a genius!
In the Wild part of my collection, I have 4 copies of Lord Jaraxxus lined up next to eachoter, 2 normal and 2 golden. I can only put 1 of them in my decks, however. In the Classic part of my collection, there are 2 more "mirrored" slightly different copies, but if I DE the duplicate DIFFERENT copies in Wild, I lose them for classic.
Why aren't the "core" cards available in "classic" in the first place? Playing classic mode could have been such a nice entry to new players, but now it is locked away behind 100s of packs which are useless for Standard. Veterans DEing their classic cards should not be a big deal, most would probably keep the cards around "just in case" anyway.
A lot of the fun with new expansions used to be imagining new combos and archetypes. I strongly dislike having to memorize every card in the core set and which version is available on top of learning the new cards to know which options are available. Some have been changed to match the versions of "Classic" mode, some have not. Now, you have to study for days and stay far away from "classic" mode to get your head around the current deckbuilding options. Otherwise, you can do what most do anyway: netdeck something with a high winrate and be done with it.
TLDR: I think my collection has turned into a complete mess, and the interface of both the collection and the cards need some serious updates. They didn't bother doing that, though, but instead introduced completely unnecessary "diamond" cards.
The reason Blizzard are making the artificial distinction is they don't want to give players cards, they want to loan them for the season (and remove them later). I.e. because they are greedy.
Completely agree with OP. Playing since 2014 and never have been so lost with what going on with my collection. Hall of Fame, Core Sets, Classic, Legacy, Expansion Rotation. . . why does it have to be so complicating?
The reason Blizzard are making the artificial distinction is they don't want to give players cards, they want to loan them for the season (and remove them later). I.e. because they are greedy.
That, and that they don't want to make people screwed over for building their collection of classic cards for years. Simply giving a dust refund would have been MUCH better that the mess they have created now.
They even rewarded a bunch of golden copies of "core" cards to make the confusion complete.
Also playing since 2014 and also lost. Another thing that bothers me us how many different legendaries there are that are the same character but can do different stuff. Especially the dragons, 3 ysera's, all kinds of different deathwings etc etc. It is confusing for me so I cant imagine what it must be for a new player. Any new players reading this and willing to jymp into the discussion?

This whole "Blizzard are so greedy" shtick is becoming very overdone. What is being described is not even "greed". It's entitlement (again). For example:
Entitled guy : Hey that's a nice car! Wish I had one like that. Other guy : Oh, well here's the keys. You can borrow it for a bit. Entitled guy : You mean it's mine to keep, right? Other guy : No, I'm lending it to you so you can use it. I can't just give it to you for free. Entitled guy : Ehrmegherd! You is liek, so grEeDy!

Yes, I don't know why they thought making multiple versions of the same card was a good idea. 3 Deathwings, 2 C'Thuns, 2 Yseras on top of the multiple versions of the same cards on top of slightly different ones with the same art... Sigh...

conveniently neglecting the fact that BMW guy asks the price of a small volkswagen for one ride around town.

Nobody have complained about "borrowed" cards in Arena and Tavern brawls, but this is a CCG, and we have been pretty used to managing our own collections as we please until now. Borrowing us cards for our collections is counterintuitive, and a weird thing to introduce 6 years into a game.
I always disenchant golden cards so Blizzard now forcing me to have a load of disenchantable golden duplicates is really irritating. I would happily disenchant them for 0-dust.

Agree. Also, am I the only one who cannot keep up with whats going on with the hero portraits as well? In the past, there were one or two hero portraits each expansion which were all iconic and memorable. Nowadays, they release 8-10 new portraits and I dont even keep track of which hero goes to which class anymore. Really cheapens the experience.

You will learn to just look at the heropower and ignore the portrait. They will make it even worse, so you should just get into the habit already.
I have a private theory that they are a bit desperate right now, looking at the surge of different "bundles". Veteran players have opened 1000s of packs over the years, and have very little incentive to spend real money on the game anymore with large amounts and accumulated recources, not even needing to start dusting the useless parts of the collection.
I totally agree with you: Blizzard should have put more effort in updating the collection manager to prevent the chaos we've got now! Nowadays you can't even look for the cards your collection is missing, because golden cards are not taken into account anymore / Blizzard changed sth in the presentation/distinction of golden and non golden cards in the collection manager.
Also: I saved 30+ Classic Packs to open Gelbin Mekkatorque - the only card I'm missing from the reworked Classic set -, but opened a duplicate Millhouse instead. 🤔 When opening the Classic packs I noticed, that the duplicate protection seems to not work properly anymore regarding Classic packs, at least not the way it used to work, as I only got cards I previously disenchanted, because I had their golden versions (e.g. Millhouse). The ladder I don't really mind, but it's still weird as to my understanding, I should only have received cards I didn't disenchant copies of (after the application of the duplicate rule). Could also be because of the changes in the collection manager mentioned before regarding golden and non golden cards. 🤷

I agree. In spite of the rhetoric of F2P being unfair players can actually earn an insane amount of gold if they play they game enough, it also helps being good at Arena.
I’m surprised they haven’t implanted a gold and dust cap so that players have to spend before they can earn more.
I was under the impression that any Core cards you have would be playable in Classic. Seems not to be the case, you need to have a separate Classic version.
It's pretty weird looking through my collection and seeing 2 + 2 sets of normal and 2 + 2 sets of golden for an individual card...
Guess they need to leave in some incentive for Classic packs to sell.
Give 'em time. I agree that the Collection is messy at the moment but there's a lot going on in the main game. Let them get 20.0 settled, and then we'll see.
Just out of curiosity, what do you reckon the fix should be? If I have 4x golden and 4x non-golden copies of a card, half of which may disappear next time the Core set rotates, how could they be better displayed?
I can't even begin to comprehend how the community manages to spin this towards Blizzard being greedy. Everyone gets a free set of cards to build decks with, and everyone who likes the 'old' hearthstone still gets to play it. Even with the new reward track people can buy loads of packs, all for free. Of course they are going to add more skins to earn more money, and if that is what needs to happen for more free stuff then I don't see a problem.
Just for once stop finding ways to complain and start appreciating what the devs do to make the game more playable for non-whales.
I always disenchant golden cards so Blizzard now forcing me to have a load of disenchantable golden duplicates is really irritating. I would happily disenchant them for 0-dust.
same I hate them, yeah, some has nice effects, but regular painted art on cards is already beautiful, I would like to filter cards so I don't have to see them in my collection...

If you want to buy packs to play "classic" mode, I assume I should buy "classic" packs, but cards added later to standard, like Barrens Stablehand can't be found in packs anymore afaik. Apparently, you still can't open perviously HOF cards in classic packs: https://www.hearthpwn.com/forums/hearthstone-general/general-discussion/248239-classic-packs-wont-have-hall-of-famed-cards Edit, this has been fixed.
