I really can't decide, I love a hearthstone expansion (I've bought all previous pre-orders bar two) and also I think Rastakhan hosts a good number of cards which we'll see become stables in many decks for the next year to come.
However I feel there are only a handful of Legendaries this expansion that are really going to stick around. So that said, maybe I don't need to open 50 packs, maybe 16 will suffice with a cheeky craft or two on the side.
What are your thoughts, are you happy with your decision to buy either pre-order? On one hand; it's the cheapest deal to get a heap of packs and from my personal experience, the random "good" legendaries that drop often lead to the most fun aspect of the game: trying to fit them into strange and wonderful decks.
On the other hand, with three expansions a year I don't always have the funds to pre-purchase each expansion, so perhaps I should wait for one that I feel boasts a few more costly cards?
I bought a 50 pack preorder and I'm happy. We don't know which cards are going to be playable yet, but 50 packs bought with Amazon coins are a good deal (and I prefer Rastakhan over Thrall and Morgl). If you buy expansions, you'll have more dust to play around and experiment. If this expansion isn't very powerful, at least you can hoard some dust.
If you play and enjoy the game and plan to keep on playing then I don't understand the argument for not preordering provided of course that you have the money for it. The bundle offers a small discount on packs which is always nice and rare because we really don't get many great deals plus you get some cosmetic stuff as well which some people like.
Most expansions change the meta enough so you have to purchase some cards (unless you are F2P you can spend hours grinding). So might as well take advantage and preorder to get some better value for your money.
Pre-ordered 50 packs yesterday. First time I pre-order actually, pretty much was F2P all the time. I see quite a lot of cool cards I want to craft and most of them are Legendaries and Epics. 3000 gold and 400 dust that I have right now, won't cut it. Pretty happy overall, I earn well so I don't mind spending money on the only game I play.
I preordered the last two expansions and I find myself with 6k dust and 6300 gold at the moment. Ive never had close to that much before an expansion so I feel comfortable not buying into hype this time around. It feels like a 'Buy 2, Get 1 Free' for expansions with the amount of saving I was doing naturally by not buying packs with gold or crafting extra cards.
I will still open 60+ packs and craft two or three legendaries I dont open so Im excited.
End-of-year expansion tends to be powerful IMO. It has not been proved wrong so far. Both K&C and MSG were very strong sets that produced new archetypes in the past.
No, because the pre-order this time is just terrible.
Witchwood gave you 70 packs. Boomsday was 50 with a golden legendary. Now that they've seen the complete flop of Artifact, they just chilled and just gave you 50 packs.
I´m kinda spoiled so i enjoy preordering most of the expansions. I´d say it depends on your money/motivation for the game. Keep in mind you can craft some decent decks without having most of the epics/legendaries.
For me, having a decent collection/archetypes to play really is worth 15$ a month
No, because the pre-order this time is just terrible.
Witchwood gave you 70 packs. Boomsday was 50 with a golden legendary. Now that they've seen the complete flop of Artifact, they just chilled and just gave you 50 packs.
Jeez, how is this an argument people actually have? Of course the pre-order is worse than Witchwood, because this expansion has a far higher power level so it clearly won't be the same "value". It has nothing to do with that sleeper of a game you mentioned.
No i did not preorder even though i kinda like the cards, because giving activision money makes my skin itch. I will never give EA or Activision a single penny as long as they are the shity companies that they are (yeah good luck with that).
I will continue to support good companies (as long as they are good) like Cd Project Red and Platinum Games. You see it's obvious that gaming companies try to maximaze their profit and there is nothing wrong about that, but draining your costumers dry and treating them like dirt is NOT OKAY. This is the reason i haven't spent in MTGA (other than the welcome bundle) even though i have a blast with the game, while i gave 25$ as a donation in Doki Doki literature club (a completely f2p game).

Sure, because Genn, Baku, Shudderwock and etc are not defining the meta in any way, right? And there are no other good cards from the set being played, like Shaw, Azalina, Hagatha, Hench-Chan Thug, Mossy Horror, Scalehide, Witching Hour, Wispering Woods, Witchwood Grizzly and etc.
Hell, aside pre-nerf Giggling Inventor there's probably much more stuff from Witchwood (which people labeled as Dustwood) defining the meta than stuff from Boomsday, and according to you, that was supposed to be a "higher power level" and with more "value" set.
The "far higer power level" is something that caused a lot of trouble in the game from KnC, caused a lot of backlash until the (very late) nerfs in March or April and all that when Artifact was taking form, hence the 70 pack deal.
Also, the "value" argument because of power level is bullshit. There's probably more stuff from KOFT being key and broken than from Kobolds (aside Warlock and pre-nerf Call to Arms). Also, whether the pack is Classic or KnC, I open 5 cards, dust and craft them for the same values. The cards there don't have more "value" to warrant a pre-order with less packs simply because it's the last expansion.
But I don't blame Blizzard, they're a company and are testing the waters. It's no coincidence the pre-order is much worse exactly after the massive flop of Artifact. Otherwise, it would be almost certain the pre-order would be much better.

I think what actually happened is a midpoint between what you two said: it might not be so much because of Artifact, but it doesn't have to do with the power level of the expac, which is something Blizzard can't actually forecast super accurately.
What happened is that sales last year, for Kobolds and Catabombs, might have been poor for whatever reason, and giving the 20 bonus packs for Witchwood was a way to get back on track. Since this measure was apparently successful, but still needed to give some incentives, they added the gold legendary in Boomsday. Now, I guess their sales are alright, and don't see the immediate need of giving incentives other than cosmetic stuff. The cycle will continue and, if sales aren't good enough here with RR, you can expect an amazing pre-order deal next year. No game lives forever, and as Hearthstone's commited player base naturally dwindles (to what extent, that we do not know), we're gonna see more and more great deals anyway.

Let's go over this piece by piece, weaker points first. Shudderwock is no where close to meta defining. 1. because it is a tier 3 deck, even below Spiteful Priest (at the time of posting this) 2. because it relies heavily on other cards, if Lifedrinker was never released then I don't think that deck would be classified as any tier. Genn and baku are quite good, but you get a card like that from every expansion. Hell, look at Zilliax, it's run in almost more decks than baku and genn combined. Of course there will be good cards played because whoa turns out they're pretty good. Back to Lifedrinker, it is run more than almost all the cards you mentioned, only being beaten by Mossy Horror and Baku, when a rare card is the third most played card in the entire expansion you know something doesn't quite match up with the so called power level you believe in.
Yes, that is very clear because everyone understands that Boomsday generally sucked. I never said it was a "value" set, I'm very clearly talking about Rastakhan.
Kobolds and Catacombs, along with the other expansions of 2017 saw a lot of ridiculous cards. Judging by how powerful "KnC" was, it's safe to assume they try making the last released expansion of the year a power level above the previous ones released on the same year. Blizzard intending for this expansion to be better than Witchwood and Boomsday warrants a worse pre-order package, even if it is better or worse.
You clearly do blame Blizzard, because you believe you're entitled to whatever you want. Turns out, you aren't. They make the expansions, they can set the price to whatever they feel comfortable with.
No, because the pre-order this time is just terrible.
Witchwood gave you 70 packs. Boomsday was 50 with a golden legendary. Now that they've seen the complete flop of Artifact, they just chilled and just gave you 50 packs.
Comparing it with older pre-orders isn't the only thing you should look at though. Have other pre-orders been better? Of course, but the deal is still a slight deal than buying 50 packs normally. If you think you are ever going to cave and purchase close to 50 packs from RR you might as well do it now and save a few dollars than to wait and cave later on for their normal price.
Before I never bought preorders but as I love this game I always caught myself that I will buy -some- packs(50+) eventually... so better to get them slightly cheaper :)
I usually have to debate with myself whetever or not I'm buying into a new expansion. Right now, all I'm wondering is if that 50 pack one I bought was enough as I love the look of so many of these new cards, and think a good chunk are going to be strong for a while to come.
With my gold and the free packs, I can get myself up yo 80 packs, but that 17 pack extra sure is looking tempting right now...

Please don't tell my girlfriend about my card collection...
Don't even pre-order if you are good in arena and willing to spend some time..This expansion isn't worth it imo.

I'm happy with the pre order and all the cards. Am rather hyped.
Rastakhan as a hero has some condescending emotes, which I find hillarious
Golden Hero Collections thus far; -
Europe: Druid, Hunter, Paladin, Mage, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, Warrior (9/9)
Americas: Druid, Mage, Paladin Shaman (4/9)
Everywhere else: Workin on it.. (0/9)
