Design Insights with Ben Brode - The Dark Side of Releasing New Content
The PlayHearthstone Youtube channel uploaded a video of Ben Brode which addresses community feedback on recent content releases and how they affect new and current players. You can check out the video, and a recap of it, below.
Ben has also stated that he wishes to do more of these types of videos in the future, so stay tuned.
Quote from Ben Brode
- They're aware that you need to collect a lot more cards nowadays and that it can be daunting to new players.
- A commitment to players to keep things fresh and exciting which means making more powerful cards to change up the meta.
- More powerful cards doesn't mean every expansion is going to have inflated numbers for reduced mana costs.
- New cards that creep upon old ones can be created when the old ones never saw play, and that's ok.
- Long term game health is very important, they want to see Hearthstone going on forever.
- They're still looking for ways to fix these problems, and community feedback is important.
Card Design Competition - Finalist Voting
This week, on a Special Edition of our Weekly Card Design Competition, the winners of our Class Creation Competition return to enter the Grand Tournament! Will you, like the Twilight's Hammer, call tentacled knights to joust in your honor? Or, like the Merchant, are you only inspired by the tournament's profit potential?
Well, we'll be crowning two champions this week, one from each class, so check out the finalists and vote for your favorites! You can learn more about the two classes, Merchant and Twilight's Hammer by clicking on their portraits below.
Tavern Brawl #13 Decks - Double Deathrattler Battler
This week's Tavern Brawl theme is Double Deathrattler Battle.
Death is not quite the end... because minions with Deathrattle now rattle twice.

Check out a couple of our favourites below and be sure to head on over to the full brawl deck listing to find others. Don't forget you can share your own creations by building your deck in our deckbuilder and setting the deck type to Tavern Brawl.

Got to play old deathrattle priest build in this brawl! I really liked that.
Great brawl. So crazy and cool.
Anyone thinks this brawl was fun?
I liked it, but had a crappy opponent who was playing a rouge netdeck
The different classes look amazing, would love to see more concepts for a whole range of classes
Moar deck slots.
Next Set comes out, Surprise Rotation! Much like standard format in magic.
And he still hasn't commented on how OTK was bad back then, and Patron Warrior is good nowadays...
GG blizz. I'm not a longtime Hearthstone player, but I'm more tempted to quit every day because of the way they have been hiding these 'reasons'.
Kinda agree with that.
Care to share? I 'd like to see that.
Isn't it just random?
There should be event sales like 20-30% off on a specific packs depending on the event that lasts for 1-2 weeks
as for F2P players like myself, there should be monthly quests like win 0/100 with ?class or win (insert amount) games in ? mode
that rewards 1000+ gold
that gives players a monthly objective towards playing the game. but that's just my suggestion. let the flaming begin
I would definitely like to see a larger number of quests that offer a bit more Gold. Perhaps in the 200-300 range.
Game is wonderful imo, only worry is that they are releasing content a bit too quickly. After 3-4 years with this speed of card releases it will be a chaos and a horrorshow for new beginners.
Imo 1 more year of this progression with adventures/expansions, and then focus more on multiplayer, custom modes, adventures and other features with less (but ofc still some) card releases. The UI needs some more work and since its such a RNG-heavy game it would be nice if it had support for some statistics for those who want to play a bit more seriously.
The game releases content at a joke of a pace. 1 expansion and 1 adventure per year, less than 200 cards. Magic used to release 2-3 expansions per year, usually a larger expansion of 300-400 cards (enough to make a fully playable deck using SOLELY the cards from that expansion) and 2 smaller ones of 130-170 cards each (by comparison GvG and TGT were a mere 123 and 132 cards respectively). Despite there being 9 classes to release cards for (compared to Magic's 5 colours) each hero gets less than a dozen cards. Magic gets more cards added to it in a single major expansion than all of HS's expansions and adventure put together.
And you're worried about them releasing content too quickly...?
Right. But you do not play hearthstone just with the 5 guys from your block/class(those that seriously go for tournaments etc. are just a very small group of all the players) by your own rules. Here you always compete with all of the players from your region and no cards are banned. Nobody would weaken his deck here to make a game interesting or fair. That situation is not comparable(the competition is extreme and unforgiving in hearthstone), especially not for new players. On top of that the social aspect of Magic is very, very limited in hearthstone.
To me hearthstone and magic is a completely different experience when it comes to losing and winning, to building a deck etc.. You buy a couple of magic cards and then you play with them and if your deck is stronger than that of your friends then you take some cards out...and you interact with your opponent. You do not go on the net, find the best deck, buy it for money(and that's what you have with those dust created legendaries) and stomp over everyone who is not willing to do the same. Hearthstone is not about playing with friends, it's about having the best deck and praying to RNGesus that it will bring you to the top of the ladder.
It is nice that they are aware of the problem and want to look after the game for the long run.
Achievement? Whut? o.O
