I tried a Baku Mage, Arugal mage and even Crow Mage. At first, Baku Mage was great and it was doing a good job. But now that people are being aware of the playstyle of all decks and building solid decks, Mage is getting eaten alive.
Baku Mage: Super fun deck nonetheless. But it lacks consistency on board presence and treats. It excels well when has board presence but if it gets behind you are pretty much screwed. Your early game minions cannot deal with any opponent. Your elementals have no board presence besides Glacial Shards but still.. Until your turn 5, you are playing slow and let your opponent to do anything. Yout turn 3 is either Tar Creeper (your best option) or the new ALL minion which does nothing beside synergize. You have no board clear until your Dragon's fury and will also kill your minions.
Arugal Mage: This deck has no real purpose besides copying minions. Its no different then the old Elemental Mageand the only difference is that you run no spells.. And that is alarming in such meta where Cubelocks exist so you have no silence, Aggro Paladins/Hunters and you have no board clear, Shuderwack Shaman where he can simply taunt/gain health and combo you... Actually Arugal is also over kill in this deck. Book of Specters is more than enough. Your hand will always be full and your elementals cost to much to do anything beside Blazecaller.
Crow Mage: This deck might the best of these 3 and I always considered Raven Crow a bad card. I still do. Even if this deck can perform better than the other 2 Mage decks it still lacks mid/late game. You can shut down Hunter's and Paladin's early game but you wont stop their mid to late game damage, specially Hunter. You also have Raven Crow that cost a lot of mana for its body and you will have to save cheap spells to make it worth it. People say one minion is enough to be good, I say its not. Because that minion is being played at 5 mana and its health will be either 2 or 3 (in less cases). And if you have a bad opener? Concede.
Hunter > Will just go ham on you.
Paladin > Go ham on you.
Shaman > Just casually using his combo and draw a lot.
Priest > Will just either combo with inner fire or spiteful everything
Druid > Spiteful as well
Thing is, you can't face these decks at all. Most of them you have a bad match up. The lack of early good minions, the lack of silence, the leck of good spells and board presence (like Priest's dragon who deal 3 to all minions), will make your life so difficult.
I am a Mage player who has over 1200 wins. I do have experience with the classs. And I know when to admit when the class is bad, annoying or great or even overpowered. As of now, it's not good. Being at rank 5 and facing all different decks made comming to this conclusion. Doesn't matter if its no even a week since the expansion because Mage's decks are limited already and they are already shut down by the others.
Ice Block could have made these new decks a little bit better but even then...
Tempo Mage has been bouncing between the top 5-8 decks on HSReplays since the set launched, with a win-rate of over 53% in 600,000 games tracked. Big Spell Mage is also over 50%.

elemental big spell mage is still good. Am fine tuning my old version, trying to figure out what to replace and attemting argul, prob will remove him tho.
Heres the old deck, make changes where nessicary. Weakest vs combo but not auto lose

that list has lackey and valet and they both rotated, these rotations also affected the secret synergy pretty heavily
vex crow is a good card its just that there are minimal good, cheap spells (glyph, frostbolt, maybe arcane missiles) I expect some cards to work with it in the next expansion(s)
Please learn card names. "Raven Crow"? "The new All Minion"?
Also, perhaps the reason you're failing is because running terrible deck builds. No Baku mage is running Nightmare Amalgam, no Arugal deck is running 0 spells.
I have lost a single game with my elemental mage since launch (in standard). It is not a conventional deck found in websites, only uses Archmage and new mage elemental from WW (not the new epic spell). I have spanked quite a few Paladins with it too.
First of all, ignore ALL winrates from the first 2 weeks of an expansion. They mean nothing. ESPECIALLY ****ESPECIALLY*** when it comes to Mage and Hunter. Those two classes specifically can always obtain absurd win rates early on.
You can literally hit top 500 Legend with an auto-complete deck.
Mage is playable, it's just bottom tier. If your goal is to ladder effectively once the Meta settles and you're facing 75% plus Aggro Paladin & Cubelock, it's just not a good choice.
I've been doing very well with a big spell control mage, climbed from rank 4 to rank 1 with a 65% winrate. Voodoo doll is extremely good in that deck, and I'm also a fan of the keysmith.
uhmm, well, mage did get efficient minions this time around, bonfire elemental is efficient and book of specters is massive card draw, the clas swil prolly be bottom tier duriing withcwood becaus eice block DID enable a lot of the mage decks, but it's not in the bottompit level of Un'goro/Frozen throe Warlock, Kobolds Warrior or Gadgetzan Paladin
Ah, but have you tried Even Spell Mage? Blizzard, Meteor, Fireball, Frostbolt, a Pyroblast, Primordial Glyph, Spellstone, Leyline Elemental and Ice Walker alongside other cheap Mage elementals and Tol'Vir Stoneshapers for defense.
No card draw unless you count Thalnos, but it has TONS of reach, board control and spell discovery! No Spiteful shenanigans either but why play Spiteful when you can freeze a Spiteful deck's board as you set up lethal? Even Spell Mage has been my favorite deck to climb with so far!

I actually can't find a single Mage minion worth playing aside from Arugal. I'd say Mage has the worst set of Minions in Hearthstone, currently.
It's the reason why it has Arugal and Book, two of the most powerful minion deck synergy cards ever released, but still can't drum up a good minion deck. I think if any other class had Arugal and Book people would be screaming for nerfs already.
For example, I was just putting together a Handmage Grey deck based on what Thijs was doing and ended up with Arugal, Book, 2x Pyroblast and... that's it for Mage cards. I actually think if there was a touch more from Mage a deck like that could be viable. But you're not going to be high level competitive using 22+ Neutral cards. Just not how Hearthstone works.

If you have a deck idea might as well go full ham on it.
I'm trying to play two mage versions: Elemental Mage and Big Spell Mage
Here are the decklists:
I run both versions with Toki, Time-Tinker just for fun
But man, Iam talking about Standard format. Not wild.
Mage is definitely way stronger now in wild but in Standard, it lacks a lot of tools to be competitive.

I play mage too and I must say it's fucking bad. Really bad, as in tier 5 bad.
mage unplayable ? i went from rank 19 to rank 11 in 3-4 hours i think it's very playable :) but idk about higher ranks ill see when i get there :)
It's all thanks to the whiners... Obviously when iceblock rotates out and we get shit like minion mage and a reprint of shatter the class will suck.
Thing is - it's just not worth playing mage now.
