I've just started playing this game 2 days ago, and after realizing that its gonna take forever to grind as a f2p to get to the cool stuff i decided to buy the Welcome Bundle and made this with the dust i got from it:
The reason I even wanted to play HS was because of Silence Priest, but after I saw that I'm still 400 dust short after buying the Welcome Pack I decided to make Zoolock since IMO Midrange Hunter looks pretty boring. But, right now I'mcurrently at rank 18 and I dont think I'll be able to progress further with this deck, so what are the best ways to get packs in this game without paying real cash again?
I tried to play arena, but I got super frustrated with only only being able to get 3-4 wins even after I got offered to play Paladin (probably has something to do with never being offered a legendary throughout my arena run)
Well, a legendary won't do it. Of course, there are good cards and bad cards, good decks and bad decks, but mostly your amount of wins depends on the playstyle you have. You need to have a very good understanding of the game to perform wel in arena. Furthermore the playstyle in arena differs a lot from the constructed gameplay
It might take a lot of time, but if you want to learn and watch streamers, friends,... you will eventually get a lot better at playing arena.
Wait, how is Arena playstyle different than Constructed?
It's all about high stats and playing on curve. If you are able to play a minion (or destroy your opponents minion) each turn, you'll be in good shape. You don't have as much room to tutor your deck for certain win condition (like making a control Mage, aggro Druid, etc) you have to work with what you get. For example, a card like Pyroblast is great in a control Mage that is built to stall and burn the opponent. But in Arena it's not that great of card because you may not be able to draft a deck that supports that playstyle, and you'll end up using it as a 10 mana removal (not good). You would be better off choosing a well statted minion over it.
Warlock is currently quite bad in this meta due to other deck doing what he is doing but better and the sheer number of cheap AOE currently available to players
The deck you have seems Ok but i never played that package in wild and don't know really how good it is. I played Demon discard warlock at the beginning of the month and I think It is probably a little better than what you are playing but you would need the Karazhan adventure.
You could try wild and standard aggro druid. The only card which cannot be replaced is living mana (epic).
The easiest way to gold is to find a quick deck with average win rate and accumalate the games. Most important part is the quickness of the games and then grind. It is better to have a 55% win rate win a turn 5/6 victory than a 60% win rate with a turn 15/16 average victory.
The other way to grind gold is to abuse tavern brawl, sometimes there are very quick brawl where you win or lose around turn 2/3. Abuse those to grind gold
Stay in standard and dont play arena or wild until you get the game amd the decks. You're new to the game most people have been playin for years and no matter what you read or netdeck you still have to play the game and get used to it. So stay in standard for at least 3 months and find a deck you enjoy there. There are tons of F2P decks for standard
But I just blew all my dust into that Zoolock which means I cant make standard cards, andd since Zoolock is apparently uncompetitive I cant win matches to get gold to get packs/play arena. So what should I do?
Best thing you can do now is grind for gold with quests. And btw, if you play a good zoolock deck in casual, you'll have a decent winrate if you know how to play zoolock. Meanwhile you try to learn a lot about arena playstyles (watch Kripparian, Hafu, Trump for arena). Especially Trump IMO explains his moves very well, but he doens't play arena as much as Kripp.
A few, but even then you can just use the basic deck from that class and use that. It won't be the best deck, but you'll always win some matches in casual
But I just blew all my dust into that Zoolock which means I cant make standard cards, andd since Zoolock is apparently uncompetitive I cant win matches to get gold to get packs/play arena. So what should I do?
Play casual in standard/wild. You will still face netdeckers with decks over 10k dust value, but it's not as crappy as playing ranked :P Zoolock is not a bad deck, but there are stronger decks atm and that's problematic. I used to play Zoo/Discardlock in early Un'Goro and dropped it completely. It does play fun in casual, but on ranked it will be hard. It doesn't mean you won't win - I remember my start a year ago with budget C'Thun Mage (those times, lol...) only to realize later, that not crafting Twin Emperor Vek'lor and going straight for Tempo Mage was the way to go. I did get to rank 15 with that C'Thun Mage anyway, so it's not that bad.
The deck is fine, and as someone mentioned, it could get you to R10 no problem (my first crafted deck when I started was zoolock).
It's a good deck for learning, and decent enough for ladder. Just don't expect to hit Legend immediately ;)
For now, I'd say play Arena if you like it, see how you do over many runs. If you're generally on 3+ wins, it's good for your gold/dust. If you're not, then it's not the cards that are stopping you but knowledge of the game. Play, learn, and experience will come with cards.
Also, mulligan the 40g quests, do the 50g and 60g ones. Even if they include winning, do them in casual and you'll be matched mostly with other newbies as well, so you can win with basic collections (and learn about other classes in the process).
Thanks for the tip, didnt know that 40g was the minimum (since in the other card games ive played 20-25g is the minimum).
1 more question, is it shameful for me to like faster decks like Quest Rogue or Token Druid? Since apparently from reading up on this game beforehand it seems like you're considered a total scumbag if you dont play control decks.
Personally I hate playing against quest rogues and token druids, but I can't blame anyone for playing them. They're super easy and can get you to legend with a decent amount of luck, and some people are just so competitive they'd rather play a boring aggro deck with 2 minute games to rank up rather than actually enjoying themselves.
So go for it if you want to I guess. I would recommend token druid over quest rogue since quest rogue requires quest & patches whereas token druid only requires patches in terms of legendaries.
Not shameful, and honestly, as a new player, you more or less have no choice but to start with fast (aggro) decks. Doesn't have to be PirateWarrior or QuestRogue automatically (those two are hated because of their playstyle and lack of interactivity), but you kind of can't compete in value vs control decks that run a ton of great late-game value cards which you simply can't have yet.
The problem with aggro, for me at least, is that it does tend to get boring. If you like it, sure, go for it.
Don't get discouraged by the lack of cards though, you'll have them in due time. As with any CCG, you can't expect to have it all in a few months. Just focus on a few classes (you don't have to disenchant the others, but don't craft anything for others either). If you keep playing, I'd say in 6 months you won't feel the lack of cards so much and will be able to play a lot of things, and in ~10 months, when OldGods, Karazhan and MSoG rotate, you'll be as competitive in Standard as anyone else (and also pretty ok in Wild, as it doesn't require THAT many cards to be crafted, if you're going for a specific deck).
Well the thing with PW and QR is that those decks are... kinda stupid. PW is just about drawing stuff, slapping on the board and going face hard. QR is praying for "bounces" and finishing your opponent with 3-4 charge minions to the face.
Both of those decks can be beaten, but they require a bit of thinking and some cards you might not have. Also, playing those decks will net you better ranks, but you won't learn much in the process. It used to be like that in WotOG meta with Tempo Mage - generally cheap and easy to pilot, but with a risk of running out of cards. It was so straightforward, that you didn't really need to use much decision making and just play minions and spam spells like crazy.
The deck that would really make you learn the game is probably Miracle Rogue, or most midrange decks, but those are expensive. Now that I think about it, good Miracle Rogue decklists used to go at 5-6k dust, after MSoG it went up to 8-9k and now those are 10k+. Holy sheet :O
