got to rank 12 in my first season :P one year ago.. dunno, finished my zoo more or less in 2-3 months and learned how to actually play well from trump and kripp.
Being a very casual player, learning how to play took me less than two months. However that can't be translated properly into ranks cause I lacked the cards. E.g. i knew what to play and when, and I could even predict the next turn moves, but still I didn't have the means to respond. So the first few months I was under r10. After i completed my first couple of decks and by devoting the same amount of time, I haven't dropped under r3 in a season. In conclusion, if you keep at it in 3-4 months you are definitely gonna get results.

Never BM. Unless they BM you first. Then you always BM.
I had a strange misconception that ranked somehow mattered when I first started playing and played casual only. I wish I hadn't, as my first 500+ games ended up being casual only and not counting towards golden portraits (I still have none) :(. It took me a while to become decent - arena definitely helped the most, helping me understand cards, interactions, card values, and tempo. I had never played a card game before this so this was all new to me.
By the time I actually got my feet wet in ranked I had some 12 win arenas and hundreds of wins in casual so it was pretty quick, I think about 2 months before I got legend. I wish I'd have learned on the job so to speak and played ranked from the start though. I'd have 2-3 golden portraits instead of 0 like I do right now.
Getting to rank 10 doesn't mean being good at HS really though does it? Being decent at arena is a far better judge of your ability to actually play and cope with unique situations involving the game mechanics. Any noob can start piloting a hunter deck close to legend whenever they feel like it.
By the second month I was getting rank 5+ running shaman with no epics or legendaries (this was about the time that beta ended). I'd say it took a couple weeks for me to be good enough as a player to get to rank 5, but I have 13+ years experience with TCGs so it came pretty natural.
I don't really remember when i thought of myself that i know shit, but it was prolly after a few months of playing. Back then i realized that ranked is not for me due to 0 legendaries and useful cards so i started raping arena with 5 wins average. When i had enough useful cards i started playing ranked. Never had the motive to go below rank 3 since i saw it as too frustrating for a game.
Lets brag a bit. Now i have all expansions, most of the cards that are useful and almost all useful legendaries ty to arena. F2P is real , 0 dollars spent on this game.
Like... I dunno. Got rank3 first season back in beta, not really trying. Probably averaging about 5 arena wins from the start.
I didn't get much better since then though lol. Just over 70% win rate in arena, bothered with legend once ( so boring ) and yah.
I'd seem worse if I started today though as arena has gotten harder if you are just starting out and aren't using heartharena. Back then it wasn't rare to see people play silverback patriarch and the likes under 3-4 wins. Now it never happens, basically. You'll never see people play those cards on purpose, but back in beta they would play multiple garbage cards and it was clear they picked them thinking they were good.
Ladder was a little easier too back then. I got rank3 with murlocs and even at those ranks people didn't figure out to kill murlocs instead of playing their own things, so they constantly got wrecked by murloc lords. But now people know how to play better at those ranks.
First month got to rank 15, Second month I invested money into the game for some cards, got to rank 12, Next month rank 7, now I can fairly easily get to rank 5. I just don't have too much time to play
I don't think there is a good way to measure how "good" you are at hearthstone. Reaching rank 5 is just a question of commitment and time investment imho. With a winrate over 50% everyone can get to this point. Getting to legend is similar, but requires even more grinding coupled with deck choice to "counter the meta" and also a large portion of luck getting good draws. But on the other hand i never reached legend, so what would i know :)
That doesn't mean your a bad player. As far as I'm concerned it's all about dedication. I play maybe 2-3 games of ranked a day, sometimes less and I've made it highest to rank 10, and I have been playing since beta. I believe if I was dedicated and played a lot more ranked I would hit legend, but it's a grind. I personally like arena more.
October: Currently at Rank 8 with Druid, 100 wins.
Basically, I play only one class per season. I was f2p for the first 2 seasons then dumped some moolah just to get me some good cards. My goal at the moment is to get every hero portrait golden. After the golden portraits maybe I'll try to gitgud at Arena.
My first few seasons were in the times where Ranked wasn't such a mess filled with netdecks, and I reached 10 my first season with basic cards, and slowly got a bit higher each season until I reached 5 or so, stopped playing for months, and came back to find that ranked had become more competitive and actually required a strong deck rather than just persistence and skill with a mediocre deck.
So I entered the Arena and had more fun there than I had done since I'd finished most of my decks/finished them -1/2 legendary(ies).
It took me around 4 months, but mostly because i didnt want to be competitive and didnt play ranked after hitting rank 20... The first time i actually realy played ranked was after they introduced ranked rewards

Got rank 5 the 1st season I play (TGT out), get legend next season
Highest I've been is Rank 5 but I only play a couple of games a day, if that. Am I good at the game? I have no idea.

as long as you keep making mistakes, and realising about it, you are learning

According to the screenshots, Rank 14 puts you in the top 25%. I'd say being in the top 25% of your hobby means you are good.

And how many people have a 50% winrate?
maybe they grind thousands of games with face hunter :p
not true
Man, i must be really bad. People reaching Legend in 2-3 months and i'm playing since "release" and never got to rank 1-5.

I stared playing last May 2015.
