joined the game when everyone was already having most of the cards in Jan 2015... watched a lot of streams and bought the two adventures and started to make it to rank 5 since the rewards were announced
and I'm actually watching the game way more than playing it :D I'm only playing to finish the quests and rather watch it on a stream, than play it myself :/
I'm played since september 2014 (ok, lets say 1 year). Reach at least rank 5 every season since february 2015, most of the time can go forward and get rank 4\3\2, one time get even rank 1, but i never reach legend, so - it's really bad results. Until legend i just can't call myself "good HS player", because, yep, good players get legend, bad players sits in the bottom of the ladder, thats how HS works.
As long as it takes to learn how to make optimal plays, have good knowledge of what your opponent probably has in their deck - which means play every class at least 25-50ish times to get a tight feel, collect a decent amount of cards for competitive play (money speeds this up), break bad habits like ending turn before you see an animal companion spawn or something... not getting too emotional when you play helps...
For example: Getting to Rank 10 at least every season.
By this example I am still a "bad" player, I don't have enough time to commit into ranking like crazy to just get rank 5. There is, however, another criteria of "good" player - get 5 wins on average in arena. This too requires dedication, but asks less compared to ranked, you don't need to have a collection to play arena. I have gained more than 5 wins only on my last run (9 wins as pre-TGT mage, 13th run), but went off arena for more than a month after that :D So, it took me a month to become a "decent" player, but it should take more than a month further to become a "good" player.
How long did it take you to actually be good at hearthstone?
I think it depends on how much prior experience you have with competitive MtG. Someone who hasn't played serious CCGs before will struggle a lot more.
I reached top-100 Legend in my first season, but I've been playing MtG since forever.
And you had to spend "some" money at start. I had experience from TCGs (not from MTG though), but I had no cards. It took me almost 2 months to completely finish my first competetive deck without spending money.
Yes, of course. Coming from MtG where a single deck sets you back hundreds of dollars, I didn't blink at the idea of spending some money to play HS competitively. At Hearthstone's prices, grinding seems like a waste of time. Compared with other CCGs, HS is dirt cheap.
well, i came in about 1 year ago, and never payed, so i didnt have the cards to get high ranks early on. i guess it took about 3 months to be somewhat good, and 6 months to play good. i reach rank 5 consistently now, but still lack a lot of good cards. only decks i can play atm are patron(80%winrate op op), grinder mage(missing 1 iceblock and doomsayers) and cw without geddon/justicar/varian. handlock as well, but i dotnt think its that great atm. might wanna try to reach legend, but mostly arena player.
nope, i just dont play a lot of constructed, i get bored very quickly, and i just want the rank 5 reward, then i quit ladder for that season
i think that i would be legend within a week of grinding ladder with patron, i just dont feel like doing that.
Rank 5 is only an achievement if you reach it within the first day of season reset when all the legend are ranking back up. Otherwise, rank 5 is just a joke. The real challenge begins from rank 4 onwards. Don't kid yourself by saying you can get legend easily. Also, once you're in legend, every one runs patron counters so you're just going to get wrecked.

I reached rank 2 legend during nax with just a basic zoo deck after just 2 months of playing. I quit the game since it became stale after I reached the top.
I recently came back when TGT was released, and last season I hit rank 1 legend with zoo again.

Man, i must be really bad. People reaching Legend in 2-3 months and i'm playing since "release" and never got to rank 1-5.
You should get a deck tracker. Winrate says a lot more then rank. a lot of legendary players only have a 53 percent winrate but play an insane amount of games.
Im using one. Currently got 62% winrate on my Druid and i'm currently in rank 11.
At least patrons are gone from the ladder as far as i can tell, facing lots of Priests, Control Warriors and Mages.
Most players here can't answer that question :P

I hit legend last month in my second month of play, and I feel I am still really bad at the game.
im just a turtle...on a boat.

There is a lot of steak here...
untill you get enough dust/gold for secret paladin deck
with that deck someone who never played hearthstone can get rank 10 (you mentioned) after 15 mins of explaining him how game works

so u have 80% winrate with patron but cant get past rank5?

I've been playing since beta and I wouldn't necessarily describe myself as "good" yet.
