Hey guys, as the title says, i'm just wondering why Mage and Rogue are so popular in general.
This is not a "oh mage and rogue are op and have high win rates post" rather, it feels that whenever there is a balance change, these two classes seem to be the most experimented with in deck building, which i assume is associated with high popularity for these two classes. For example when Galakrond Shaman was oppressive for a while then got nerfed, people weren't like "Oh man, i want to create the next meta shaman deck!". Instead, Shaman never really saw the light of day after that balance change. However for Mage and Rogue, no matter how many rounds of nerfs they receive, people still play these two classes on ladder and try to make them work.
I personally don't enjoy playing either of these two classes, (except control mage and highlander mage) as it feels too much like playing solitaire, and not interacting with my opponent is very unfun to me. Just wanted to hear some input from some of you who might enjoy Mage or Rogue!

Exactly as you said "like playing solitaire, and not interacting with my opponent"
both classes have an Anti Control advantage, strong face combos. the game ends relative quickly so its efficient for climbing. Rogue is popular because of the combo play style, Miracle turns, cheating mana, bouncing battle-cry minions, drawing many cards. its fun to combine many plays in 1 turn.
In mage you do similar things, cheating mana, drawing many cards, generating cheap cards, especially the non minion burn mage.
As someone who likes Rogue for the most part, but despises Mage, I can only answer that partially.
What I like about Rogue is that most Rogue cards don't have insane value on their own (Jandice Barov really stands out as an atypical Rogue card in my opinion). It's all about synergy, finding the perfect fit for your deck and playstyle. The "Combo" keyword pretty much sums that up. The class invites you to play around with a lot of different takes on the same core deck. There's no deck that I have tried out more different versions of in the last months than Weapon Rogue. All in on poisons, more minions and more fighting for board, burn damage, stealth synergies, some random stuff with Wand Thiefs, I've tried it all. And all have their pros and cons, none of those decks were strictly better than others, I think. You can really adapt to the meta and experiment. This also very fitting of how I would picture a class with the title "Rogue": Always having a different ace up their sleeves.
I don't like the excessively random Rogue decks like Galakrond and Whirlkick Rogue though. I can't stand reading the words "generated by" more than like five times in a single game. Some randomness is cool to spice things up, but at some point it just turns into a clown fiesta. For the same reason I hate Mage and Priest.
HS is a child game 6+ or 7+. Children love magic and wizards. Mage will always be the most popular class. Rogue will go second for the similar reason.
Seriously? Give me a break... If that is true, then my theory about men who love to play with big Garrosh 'cause they love to pretend to have big d..ks is too. :P
Rogue deck is quite flexible. In a game whose main decks often seem to win the very same ways and play the exact same ways (aka "my curve is better than your curve", or "I just outdamage you" or "I stalled") rogue can actually be more playful to their win strategies. Some matches will only be won by wombo combos, others can make big swing turns to decide them, and so and so on.
Mage is fairly simple, somewhat cheap (I think) and being mostly spells, can get through most control decks easy. That said, it's mostly what you pick when you want consistent fast climb and won't take paladin.
I think it's because maybe they're the most tricksy classes? Like, you have a lot of flexibility in competitive and casual deckbuilding to be really experimental or Timmy-ish, or build a deck that's extremely competitive and good.
Like, Rogue can build some really Timmy stuff, and Mage has really high levels of RNG, I know two people who only play Mage because Casino Mage is fun for them, so they both appeal to the inner Timmy within all of us. I played Rogue for years because it was the class you can durdle around the most with in game, which is fun for me.
Could be a lot of reasons, stuff like this is subjective.
Decks tend to flavor of the week but aggressive and burn stratagies due to tend to have a parcitular like by some people and rogue / mage are the face burn decks.
Ignore the responses calling them op. It’s just salt. Most classes, save for shaman and priest, have enjoy an insane amount of tier 1 viability.
The real answer is they are the flashiest classes. By design, they can make big “plays” compared to other classes.
Take Paladin/hunter as two examples of they’re often very strong, but just because they have good units/tempo. Nothing Paladin or hunter does is flashy. They just fill the board best they can, and try to run with tempo.
Decks like control warrior, ramp or token Druid, or handlock are in the same boat. Often times these archetypes are strong, but their gameplan is very straight forward, and anything but flashy.
Mage and rogue both do what no other classes does in respect to, for a good deal of their history, their “flashiness.” They are capable of crazy turns if they have the right assortment of cards, and it’s often very fun. I am not referring specifically to this meta, but just the classes as a general over time.

Spell go face 😏
Fuhgeddaboudit
RNG makes the game interesting.
Both classes have the most RNG?
Hence, most popular.
Also, other reasons, like mana cheating and discover are also fun.

Cause rogue is the best class in hearthstone.
HS is a child game 6+ or 7+. Children love magic and wizards. Mage will always be the most popular class. Rogue will go second for the similar reason.
Because you can play 4-12 cards every turn.
As someone who likes Rogue for the most part, but despises Mage, I can only answer that partially.

Ceterum censeo classum magi esse delendam.
big swing turn potential with less potential of running an empty hand
Mana cheating, card draw, face damage. Why wouldn't they be popular?
They are my favorite classes. Why? Probably because they are among the most versatile ones.
Seriously? Give me a break... If that is true, then my theory about men who love to play with big Garrosh 'cause they love to pretend to have big d..ks is too. :P
Jaina and Valeera are waifu.
Mage produces MAGIC. Their spells does wonders unlike any other.
Rogue is flexible. Combo for value and guerilla tactics. You have many ways to play the same deck on different cards.
Each class have their charm. Ppl play what suits them most. Most important is that you had fun win or lose.
The same reason why shaman it's the least popular.
People like to win and using good classes.
