I've had it. I've - mostly - enjoyed this game since I joined it over a year ago. I have all the cards needed to make top tier decks. I watch the pros, I read the forums, I netdeck the highest rated meta decks and follow the guides. Most of my characters are level 60.
And I can't level above Rank 18. I played 40 hours last month and I simply ping ponged between 20 and 18.
Pirate Warrior? Jade Druid? Aggro Shaman?
Nope. Doesn't matter. And you don't need skill to 'slave' to a well written deck guide - which I tried to "take myself out of the equation." It makes no difference. In casual play, once my MMR settles in, I eventually get to a 50/50 win rate, but my opponents just have basic cards by then.
I sense the game designers know something is wrong, which is why they keep introducing new ranked play 'floors' to lure more people into ladder. Unless they are prepared to put a new floor under every star, however, I won't be sticking around.
i am interested in hearing from those who had this issue and improved. With Reno leaving, I'll be going with him if something doesn't change.
Yo I was experiencing the same thing until I started playing water rogue. Since then I climbed to rank 10 within a day. I highly suggest you try it out.
i dont know how you cant rank up with pirate warrior. There is basically no way to stop the cancer. Also, if you want to play a fun deck, try the one in my signature. You can easily get to rank 15, then to switch to a meta deck.
Man sounds like you've played alot more games than i have, and I'm rank 7 right now, it's never as bad as you think, and its not that hard to rank up. You either need to stop reading those guides or change something in your deck, be innovative, be creative and make your deck YOURS, you will have much more fun and likely rank up faster
At this time of the season, getting past rank 18 honestly shouldn't be hard, not being harsh but it really shouldn't. Do you have any replays you could show us? I'd be happy to give you some tips about ways to improve your play.
If you've played for a year and can't get past rank 18, especially with the advent of ranked thresholds, I think the problem here is not with the game. You can misplay everything with Pirate warrior and still end up with above 50% winrate, especially at low ranks. All that's needed is volume of games. The truth is, with a so-called 'cancer netdeck', you have to be trying really hard to not rank past 18, that's how brainless and effective the deck is.

Don't listen to garbage like this. . The truth is many people would rater belittle their own ability to grief the masses than to acknowledge an accomplishment. There is nothing wrong with the 15-20 bracket if you enjoy the game.

The thing is, he does't sound like he's enjoying it.
I personally got to rank 5 this season with Water Hunter so playing innovative decks is still at least somewhat possible in the current meta. However, i do agree that the power level of the top decks is way too over the top.
I mean really, stuck at rank 18? you can get to rank 10 by playing pirate warrior and doing nothing but use as much mana as you can every turn and click face (unless a taunt's in your way).
And you don't need skill to 'slave' to a well written deck guide - which I tried to "take myself out of the equation."
This is your problem. You think it is not because of you when it clearly is. If you cannot even beat basic-card-decks with your netdeck-cards that are power creeping over all of them there must be something you are doing wrong.
Trading, defending, switching to face anticipating, calculating odds ... you really think its the same people that go to legend and tournaments and the same people that are stuck before rank 15 is because there is no skill element in the game?? I am not saying luck isn't involved but over the course of hundreds of games you will end up where your skill allows you to.
I would suggest approaching the game differently. maybe start building your own decks ( that you know of but never played) to start understanding what the core strategies of some decks are. After 30+ games, look up the actual decklist, look at the differences and try to understand why these differences are impactful for the winrate of the deck, and why they fail if this is not leveraged to the max.
Imo, decks like freeze mage, anyfin pally and pirate warrior (yeah yeah, easy deck right? but the design is beautiful and winrates differ quite between players) are beautiful examples of this. They have very clear objectives, very few cards that can be exchanged and very specific strategies. if you cant ladder with these decks to rank 15 its because you dont execute their strategy correctly. you should certainly be able to pilot plenty of decks to rank 10 each season without too much effort just because of the bonus stars.
I used to be like that, if I ever hit 17 or 16 I felt like I made legend. It was like that for about a year too. Now I hit top 10 ranks pretty easily every season. There were a lot of tiny decisions that I could have made better (you could call them misplays if you want) and even the slightest one of those can cost you a game. Once I got more comfortable with my cards, kept tighter track of the meta, and really, just started playing better, things started going MUCH better. I still hit ruts in the ladder at times (rank 13 every month seems to frustrate me) but persistence is key. One thing I do is just try fun decks. Even when they fail, you may discover cool combos that help you out in later decks that you build. Just my own, optimistic 2 cents. I wish you luck!
Clarification: You've never reached above rank 18? What is the highest rank you've reached?
A lot of ranking up is dependent on win-streaking, as most decks' average win-rates are around 50%, so don't get down on yourself if you're getting a win-rate around there.
As others have said, if you have videos, post them and we'll see if we can help. Otherwise, not sure what to tell you! DOES seem very strange (and I'm sure super frustrating) that you're unable to climb! If you've never gone above 18, maybe it's a fundamentals problem? If you've gone above 18 before, maybe it's just a SUPER bad beat?
I feel for the OP. Some people just grasp the game and can make legend all the time with just about any decent deck, while others struggle to climb with even the top tier decks. I admit that I am in the second category. I have played for almost 2 years and couldn't even get past rank 5 with Midrange Shaman last fall.
I would encourage people to be more understanding - everyone has different skills in life. I have plenty of education and have a demanding job so I'm not a total idiot, but I just suck at strategy games like chess and Hearthstone lol. The key is to find a way to make the game fun, like making unique decks.
EDIT: Most people on this thread have been super understanding and supportive, even offering to help. I just see comments on other threads bashing people who "can't even make legend with Pirate Warrior, etc".
I mean I m really sorry to hear about that OP but really tho if its really that bad I suggest not playing ladder for awhile and try out fun decks in casual or play wild like me:3
I mean this is my 2nd season and I hit my first time legend while playing standard and hitting rank 6 there with a fun Control Nzoth Jade Shaman.I mean the way I pushed was watching every pro and researching my cards properly and seeing how the meta is and then finding out my way of playing which turns out to be rogue:3
So just keep grinding and pay attention to every turn you play and you should do good:3
Hope you get better!

If what you say is true, then turn-based CCGs aren't for you. It's probably best to move on if you care about ranked.
OP is either lying or throwing games on purpose.

Maybe study the moves these pros make and ask yourself why they made them. I'm no vet and sitting at rank 9 with priest...
I'm at rank 8 with the deck in my Sig. Super fun!
I like to make cards and discuss game balance.
I enjoy when "No similar decks were found."
