I'm recently getting into control mage and making my own deck. As I don't have much experience with control mage (I used to play tempo a lot but not control) I'm not sure which of the following cards fit best into a control mage deck. I'm playing a reno c'thun deck (not sure if it's any good, but I'm having fun) so I can probably only pick 1 or 2 out of the following:
1. emperor thaurissan
2. sylvanas
3. archmage antonidas
all of them are good cards but I'm not sure whether control mage should play more like a combo deck or a traditional control deck.
In other control decks Sylvanas is a sure thing, the reason for that is they can play a more "minion centric" game. These decks have win conditions like Grommash and Tirion.
Mages win condition is mainly down to spells, whether it being to clear/protect the board or to hit direct damage to face.
I the most common control styled Mage is obviously freeze Mage, even though it's combo based.
Basically every control deck will need a win condition. I think Antonidas will be the choice to offer that.
Emperor Thaurissan is a good card in control mage since you usually have a huge hand. It does not close the game out, just ensures you can play a huge tempo turn down the line. Antonidas is a win condition that is best with low cost spells which control decks usually lack (unless you're playing some sort of Yogg-Saron shenanigan). Sylvanas is good in control shells, but shines more in minion centric control decks (looking at you Nzoth and C'thun).
All in all, it mostly depends on what your deck is doing. Are you Reno, Nzoth, C'thun, Yogg Saron? Or are you playing concede mage with your win condition being locking your opponent out of winning or Elise Starseeker? Btw I've been testing out concede mage with a fellow legend player friend. 75% win rate as of now and the list is pretty refined. I'll be posting it soon if you're interested!
This is a really tough choice and you should post your deck in entirety.
Sylvanas is best in decks that can afford to get behind in board control but have catchup tools. Your deck obviously fits here.
Emperor is best in decks (from my experience) which play a lot of spells. Your deck should fit here.
Antonidas is best in decks which you play alot of spells but don't have good reach vs. very defensive decks. This depends entirely upon your deck and the amount of anti aggro, low mana cost spells and reach you have.
You could build it as an anti agro deck with rhonin and antonidas for example
Or you could build it more spell heavier with sylvanas or empteror.
On average Sylvanas is never wrong in a control deck
Toni is the kind of card that flips the game around and gives you a window to close out games you were not supposed to win. C'Thun performs a similar role so I'm not sure Toni is as important here as he is in C'Thunless decks. He is also good if you are experiencing running out of gas against Warrior.
Emperor depends on your curve and what you're trying to accomplish. Most decks running him are looking to OTK the opponent all though he can be valuable as a pure tempo play too. But again this depends on your curve. If you're running a heavy and greedy build I'd try him out, if not you can probably do without him.
Sylvanas is always great. I'd say you need a good reason not to run her in a Control deck. I think the question should be if you need to run Emperor/Toni on top of Sylvanas and not instead.

Hi all,

Any advice is appreciated.
