This is an attempt at creating a Mage deck with the new quest Open the Waygate. The deck is build similarly to Freeze Mage but with a similar win condition as the old Echo Mage deck which was a very popular deck before the rotation.
I feel like running 4 giants is too risky but that's where Molten Reflection comes into play. It gives you more flexibility and more consistency by copying the one version of Giant you can play. You don't need 4 giants with Alexstrasza. The combo is as follows:
- Play 1 giant (Molten Giant or Arcane Giant) or both depending on what activator you have;
- Copy it with Molten Reflection;
- Play your Time Warp;
- Play Alexstrasza on your opponent and hit them for 16.
This should be enough against most opponents. Warriors and Druids could be a problem but Warriors have Brawl so 4 giants would be easily cleared and Druids can't clear 2 of them anyway.
As for the early game, Arcanologist is basically a 2 mana 2/3 draw Ice Block which is crazy powerful and consistent. There are enough Quest activators and you can pick a thrid Molten Reflection if need be as another win condition. The rest are either draw engines or delay tools.
I am excited to test it out!
Edit: With the bonus of discovering JUG spells, the likelihood of getting a Molten Reflection might be high enough that including 2 of them is overkill. We'll have to see but it's good to keep that in mind.
Edit2: There is the consideration of running another combo with Time Warp. It consists in:
- Playing 2 Sorcerer's Apprentice;
- Playing 2 Molten Reflection;
- Playing Time Warp;
- Playing Archmage Antonidas;
- Casting a spell and chaining Fireball.
This combo is arguably stronger than the giant one since it can bypass Taunt minions and deal an infinite amount of damage. However, it requires a lot of cards and a substantial set up. I don't think it is consistent enough to see reliable play. We shall see. If Taunt decks are in the meta, some adjustements will have to be made.
Changelog: +1 Arcane Giant/ -1 Molten Giant for more consistency. +1 Polymorph/ -1 Molten Reflection for more control. +1 Acolyte of Pain / -1 Mana Bind. +2 Kabal Courier +1 Loot Hoarder / -1 Acolyte of Pain -2 Shimmering Tempest
Addendum: Well, I didn't expect my theorycrafting deck to get that much success, thank you all for liking. I didn't ask for this, but this was merely a draft and now that the expansion is out, I can see how unrefined this list is and that the Mage Quest might not be the most viable Quest of all. Being busy I haven't even had a chance to test it out. That said, there are plenty of other lists in Hearthpwn that must be better and I encourage everyone to check them out.
I don't have any footage of the deck in action, but a really cool guy named kiwiinbacon made a video about it. You should take a look at it!
Getting run over by hunters, bad deck.
Haven't run into a hunter yet, but it's been very strong against paladins and druids so far. Any deck is going to have bad matchups, doesn't make it a bad deck (;
Jade druid wrecking it too. Bad deck.
I played a carnassa hunter and was able to win with 1 health after he played carnassa
Holy shit this deck is fun to play. I get so much random bullshit in my hands that my opponents don't know what to play around. I was actually happy to pull a [[Shatter]] from a [[Cabalist Tome]].
The finisher is so satisfying too.
Great stuff.
These mage decks based around the quests don't work. You're basically sitting there incredibly exposed and vulnerable and letting your opponent ramp up gambling on drawing your combo. If you don't you lose.
First game, first win. I love this deck, i beat an Amara priest. Only because i was getting ice blocks from my spell givers. (i got 3!) priest was pissed AF
Yeah, that happened to me against the Murloc shaman quest guy. He got his reward super early, but I pulled an extra ice block or two and ended up winning the game.
Got the quest from opening packs, crafted 2 glyphs and wow I have won my first 5 games rank 14-12, 3 of them were jade druids. Primordial Glyph probably one of the best cards of the xpansion. Awesome Deck.
Kabal Courier not always gives you a spell, so you have to pay attention to that if you want to complete the quest. I still think that [card]Burgly Bully [/card] is sorely missed from this deck, but its shaping out great. This is probably the kind of deck that I will be playing the most.
Assuming I get all those Un'Goro cards, it's still going to cost me 3,600 dust >.> Which is unfortunate, the deck looks pretty sweet!
If you have Rag, Sylvanas and the other classic cards that are rotating out of standard, you should receive about 4,000 dust.
This deck might actually work but it has one (huge) problem : Taunts . There are a lot of taunts in this expansion and some people believe that handlock might actually comeback .
How do you deal with that ?
Just a guess, but Doomsayer On turn 1 in time for them to die by turn 2 of the quest
EDIT: I take it back and see the error of my ways lol. So ya you're correct.
Most of early handlock's taunts can't attack. So you can search combo, sometimes use blizzard, and then OTK
the idea behind including it is so that when you get proked you can play both molten giants for free and time warp but withought molten giants I don't know why they are being included if anything Mana Bind might serve a better purpose for completing the quest faster and discounting the arcane giants.
I do agree with Linkawaii. More over, you are putting two Ice Block when you could put one if you really want and another card you could benefit from.
I don't know if you played this deck before making this comment, but I need every ice block I can get to make this deck work!
why no Burgly Bully? Bad stats? In the worst case - one cheap spell. If meta won't be so fast as current, should be ok.
