This is an attempt at creating a Mage deck with the new quest Open the Waygate. The deck is build similarly to Freeze Mage but with a similar win condition as the old Echo Mage deck which was a very popular deck before the rotation.
I feel like running 4 giants is too risky but that's where Molten Reflection comes into play. It gives you more flexibility and more consistency by copying the one version of Giant you can play. You don't need 4 giants with Alexstrasza. The combo is as follows:
- Play 1 giant (Molten Giant or Arcane Giant) or both depending on what activator you have;
- Copy it with Molten Reflection;
- Play your Time Warp;
- Play Alexstrasza on your opponent and hit them for 16.
This should be enough against most opponents. Warriors and Druids could be a problem but Warriors have Brawl so 4 giants would be easily cleared and Druids can't clear 2 of them anyway.
As for the early game, Arcanologist is basically a 2 mana 2/3 draw Ice Block which is crazy powerful and consistent. There are enough Quest activators and you can pick a thrid Molten Reflection if need be as another win condition. The rest are either draw engines or delay tools.
I am excited to test it out!
Edit: With the bonus of discovering JUG spells, the likelihood of getting a Molten Reflection might be high enough that including 2 of them is overkill. We'll have to see but it's good to keep that in mind.
Edit2: There is the consideration of running another combo with Time Warp. It consists in:
- Playing 2 Sorcerer's Apprentice;
- Playing 2 Molten Reflection;
- Playing Time Warp;
- Playing Archmage Antonidas;
- Casting a spell and chaining Fireball.
This combo is arguably stronger than the giant one since it can bypass Taunt minions and deal an infinite amount of damage. However, it requires a lot of cards and a substantial set up. I don't think it is consistent enough to see reliable play. We shall see. If Taunt decks are in the meta, some adjustements will have to be made.
Changelog: +1 Arcane Giant/ -1 Molten Giant for more consistency. +1 Polymorph/ -1 Molten Reflection for more control. +1 Acolyte of Pain / -1 Mana Bind. +2 Kabal Courier +1 Loot Hoarder / -1 Acolyte of Pain -2 Shimmering Tempest
Addendum: Well, I didn't expect my theorycrafting deck to get that much success, thank you all for liking. I didn't ask for this, but this was merely a draft and now that the expansion is out, I can see how unrefined this list is and that the Mage Quest might not be the most viable Quest of all. Being busy I haven't even had a chance to test it out. That said, there are plenty of other lists in Hearthpwn that must be better and I encourage everyone to check them out.
I don't have any footage of the deck in action, but a really cool guy named kiwiinbacon made a video about it. You should take a look at it!
Not sure if six cards will be enough sources to discover cards outside your deck. It's a good start but far from a final build.
1 taunt and you won't be able to do your OTK.
Also better against control warrior if it returns to the meta
I would strongly consider adding Kabal Crystal Runner and other secrets in this deck. It's much more easier to get Kabal Crystal Runner's mana cost down to 0 when compared to Arcane Giant and it can act as a tempo card against agro decks. That and perhaps Mana Bind, Ice Barrier, Kabal Lacky and Kirin Tor Mage could really help this deck's winrate against agro decks without hurting it's already favored match-ups against slow midrange or control decks. You might even remove arcane giant in a hyper aggressive meta if you have Crystal Runner.

How about -1 tome, +1 Elise?
because it's not a wild deck
.
He meant the new Elise in Un'Goro obviously. You know "Shuffle a pack of Un'Goro into your deck"? It's a good idea, but not to replace Tome. Tome is critical to getting the Quest off.
Yeah I thought its obvious what I meant but nevermind. However the pack is a spell if im not mistaken and you probably get spells with it also.The body is alright aswell(and if you're into nightelves +1). Plus its Hearthstone We need more bs rng, right! Maybe tome is more value but i will have fun testin' with Elise. And you alredy have plenty other ways to complete the quest.
The deck isn't well optimized.
Shimmering Tempest is bad compared to Kabal Chemist. If you've played any Freeze Mage at all, you'll know that its turn 4 is one of its weakest. Getting a minion to play for board and a potion is huge and helps the deck curve out well.
Also, the deck as is can't beat armor or taunt. I added Burgly Bully and Antonidas for some alternative win conditions (remember cheap spells from Primordial and 1 Mana Bind). Molten Reflection kinda sucks too. Much better to run a single Molten. By the time this deck is ready to win it won't have any health so the Molten might even be more reliable than the Arcane Giants.
No spell burn so Bloodmage is expendable and Poly doesn't seem worth the slot/can be gotten from the random spells generated.
Changes in full:
-2 Shimmering Tempest
-1 Bloodmage Thalnos
-1 Polymorph
-1 Cabalists Tome
-1 Molten Reflection
+2 Kabal Chemist
+1 Burgly Bully
+1 Archmage Antonidas
+1 Mana Bind
+1 Molten Giant
I think 1 Molten Reflection with 1 Molten Giant and 1 Arcane Giant would be fine
And Thalnos is not just Spelldmg, it is also Deckcycling
I hate to be a party pooper, I'd love for this deck to work, but it's just not going to.
It's going to be completely run over by aggro and against control you'll be stopped in your tracks by a taunt or two and you have no real way of removing them. Quest warrior is just an autoloss, I expect the winrate to actually be zero percent. Jade druid has Feral Rage, big taunts and are going to have pretty much a full board by the time you'll be able to play this. Guessing something like 10-20% winrate? Etc.
The unlimited fireball/antonidas version might be harder to put together the pieces, but that is the only version I can see having any kind of chance of being competitive of the two.
Arcanologist will not work with only two secrets - in ~70% of the games the 2nd one will be a dead draw, and in ~25% even the first will be dead. You should either run ice barrier or mana bind (help with the quest) or both.
Polymorph can never be played over fireball (it was rarely played in freeze mage). As a freeze mage you need to remove threats, not to polymorph them. If you add it against combo pally - it will probably be very weak against FM with doomsayer shenanigans and with ice blocks.
Double cabalist tome feels too slow. I know it will help with the quest - but you might be dead at this time. Shimmering tempest might be too weak too, but it should be playtested (if you cut shimmering tempest and 1 cabalist tome, mana binds are must include).
Overall for me:
-1 cabalist tome -1 polymorph -1 shimmering tempest -1 acolyte of pain
+1 ice barrier +1 mana bind +2 fireball
I'd cut 1 Cabalist's Tome... I feel like 2 would be clunky... They might make you overdraw and they're completely useless against any fast Deck... I'd rather have more cycle or something like Kabal Courier or even Kabal Chemist that would help towards completing the quest but also give you some kind of board presence...
why is everyone up voting this...does this guy use bots or something?
Because it will work? Belive mi it will be more annoying than freeze mage. I hope I am wrong
