Hate aggro? Hate combo? Have too much dust or a lot of legendaries? If you answered yes, this the deck for you!
Reminiscent of control warlock, this deck replaces Kobold Librarian, Hellfire, and Amethyst Spellstone with the discard package. No need to damage your face to upgrade your spellstone with this deck! Just use cheap clears with Shriek and Defile and then slap down your lifesteal minions.
Board Clearing!
You're four board clears are going to be Shriek, Defile, Lord Godfrey, and Twisting Nether.
Bloodmage Thalnos works really well with both Shriek and Defile. If you're next lowest cost card is something you don't want to discard, such as Reckless Diretroll or Ironbeak Owl, then don't play Bloodmage Thalnos before you Shriek unless you turbo need that extra +1 damage.
Can combo Defile with Spellzerker. Ironbeak Owl can combo too by giving you a guaranteed 1hp minion on the field while silencing some pesky LOA or other buffed minion.
Mulligans!
Against aggro/tempo/midrange:
Basically the cards you want to keep are anything the clears the board or puts a hefty taunt in the way. I would hard mulligan for Shriek, Defile, and Reckless Diretroll.
It's okay to be greedy with some cards you know you will need. Those cards will differ depending on the match-up. An example of this is keeping spell damage for shriek against a hunter with Emerald Spellstone. You would also keep Ironbeak Owl against a buff paladin.
Against control:
You want your value cards against a control matchup. This means trying to get discard, Soulwarden, Clutchmother Zavas, and High Priestess Jeklik. If you manage to discard one of your Soulwardens late game, you're looking at some wicked infinite value.
Against combo:
Hard mulligan for Demonic Project, Gnomeferatu, and Rin, the First Disciple. You probably won't play Demonic Project until much later in the game, but it's a card you NEED to have. Especially if you get unlucky drawing your other disruption.
Card Choices!
Ironbeak Owl x2 instead of Spellbreaker because it's the same cost as High Priestess Jeklik so it's better to choose the cheaper silence to be able to play it more easily. Or you could even discard Ironbeak Owl on purpose in a match-up where you need lots of silences to get them back with Soulwarden.
Many of the other cards here are staples in control, so leave a comment if you want something explained!
Tech options!
I'm aware this deck has a shit tone of legendaries (that tends to be the trend with the expansion right before the rotation) so here are some tech options!
Lord Godfrey can be replaced with a second Twisting Nether
Zola the Gorgon can be replaced with Baleful Banker
Zilliax or Blood-Queen Lana'thel can be replaced with Rotten Applebaum
Bloodmage Thalnos can be replaced with Tainted Zealot
Corpsetaker is an all-around good card to add for a 4 drop with taunt, lifesteal, and divine shield if you're lucky.
I kept trying to use this deck and found that not all parts are working together. I was missing discard and also did not get enough value from Skull of the Man'ari. So I made some changes:
-2 Demonic Project / -1 Zilliax / -1 Zola the Gorgon
+2 Doomguard / +1 The Soularium / +1 Cruel Dinomancer
This makes the deck more consistent. Haven't played enough yet to know if it's actually good though.
I recommend adding quest at that point! This deck is an anti-meta deck. Which means all you do is disrupt. Rin and demonic project are pretty essential. You win by either destroying their win condition or stalling the game. You can take out all the slower elements and stall like nether, rin, and godfrey and try adding quest, hellfire, lakarri felhound. Should work better with your playstyle.
I find myself just getting run over with mid game pressure, the deck has no answer to anything above 3 health in the mid game without the spellstone. You either kill something with a 2 or 3 dmg shirek, or have to wait to siphon soul on 6
This deck has lots of taunts instead of running hellfire and spellstone. The lifesteal minions give you the health that spellstone would. Defile can also kill minions above three. especially with spellzerker. You kill 1 hp minion and then hop to 4 hp. You can cut some late game for tainted zealot to kill at 2 and 4 hp. Against aggro you can shriek into diretroll into a 6/6 zavas into a 3/6 lifesteal minion and cheat out voidlords with skull. Late you have godfrey and nether.
Tried this for brawliseum, 1/3. Lost to control priest, then to hunter. Lucked out vs odd paladin and then got beat by aggro druid. Would not recommend.
Well I was able to do two damage with this deck wow idk how you win with NOTHING on the board and it looks like it sucsk vs. rush cause you can't play anything till turn 3
Most control decks don't run any 1 drops or many 2 drops. For example, combo shudderwock shaman has 3 playable minions in the first two turns and this deck has 4. You can defile the enemies board early in the game and put down a 2/6 taunt and stall with your other taunts. Turn 5 you can skull and get out some voidlords, play zilliax, play jeklik if you have discarded her already, or play lana'thel. Lana'thel will still get buffed by discard after you've played her.
Was getting bored with Even Lock, and this looks like a lot of fun. Hoping for a guide, but regardless going to be playing around with it. Thanks for sharing!
working on a guide rn! let me know if there's anything in particular you would like me to explain, I've never done an in-depth guide before.
Yes actually! it's probably just because I'm super new to the deck (never had interest in discard until this xpac), but I feel like I'm really running out of steam vs the Hunter and Mage DKs. The hunter can come up with a zombeast for everything I throw at him, and I don't have enough reach to kill the mage before I get overwhelmed with elementals. I pulled Glinda months ago, think she has any value here?
I would try being more aggressive with finishing Rin against those decks then! Save your board clears for they will have more value. For example, don't twisting nether when it's killing a ton of your stuff too. try and save demonic project against hunter for when you know you can hit a zombeast. They won't be able to hit your face late game with all the legendary taunts you have and the 4 voidlords (2 from guldan). You just have to save your value and continue to control the board. You will out-value them late game with azari (from completing the rin demons). Your hero power is much stronger than DK Jaina's. You just have to do the math and prevent her from being able to set up her hero power. For example, if she has a water elemental on the field, don't play a minion with 4 health, because she will attack into it and hero power it to finish it off and summon another water elemental.
Any time I see a discard lock without Lakkari Sacrifice, I know that I can take it seriously.
Not sure if that's sarcastic or not, but I agree! It's more effort than it's worth to try and discard 6 cards for the portal. The ONLY match-up that would be good in is control because you would out value them late game. This deck doesn't need that though due to the value hero power from Bloodreaver Gul'dan and all the High Priestess Jekliks you get from discarding along with the extra copies you get from Soulwarden.
Take out the the quest and u should be fine. Baleful banker for the lifesteal legendary
Caught me in the middle of editing it! I ended up replacing quest and both dinomancers with Zola, Zilliax, Thalnos, and Mortal Coil! I thought dinomancer was just too slow and didn't have enough synergy. I'll put baleful banker as a replacement for Zola in the description.
this deck SUCKS!!!
