As a huge fan of most Blizzard games I liked Hearthstone from Day 1 as I have been playing MTG since the late 90s. I still very much enjoy Hearthstone and I would say my love for the game has not really diminished. With that said after spending the last week or so trying out Legends I feel like playing it over Hearthstone at this point. There is more thought into each game and deck building. I'm still weary as I have so much time put into Hearthstone already so I'm not ready to give it up entirely but needless to say I am very much looking forward to what Legends has to offer.
I played a bit last night and I find the game interesting enough to probably do daily quests and maybe when I'm tried of Hearthstone, but that's likely it right now. I like some of the game play and the fact that I know the lore, but right now it just seems... unfinished... I guess is how I want to describe it. I'll use the 5 sections quoted above because I like how it is organized and add my own category, the user interface.
1. I'm not a fan of reward systems that give so much so soon. It feels overwhelming and less rewarding. I like the upgrading of cards. That is a cool feature. However, most of the time I just want gold and packs so I can get better cards. I don't really like just getting random cards. I'd rather get them from packs. That's part of the card game experience for me that I love.
2. Haven't played arena yet. No opinion.
3. That sounds awfully similar to the original Hearthstone ranked system back in beta. Everyone was able to get up easier, but it wasn't rewarding at all nor competitive. I'll have to play a little more to give a better opinion on it, but this is not my ideal ranked system. It's good for people who are delusional about their actual level of play or don't like competitive systems though.
4a. I thought this system would be more interesting when I first played. Turns out it's not. It only applies to battles between creatures. Buffs, de-buffs, and summon effects can still cross lanes. This takes out a lot of thought process from things in my opinion. There really isn't much depth here. It's a cool idea thought that separates it from Hearthstone though.
4b. Gotta get through that huge deck somehow lol. I like this feature, but I don't think it adds much other than allowing you to cycle your deck a little easier. It doesn't make you think about going full retard if the deck is 50 cards. How many prophecy cards are people really putting in their deck? Likely not enough that I won't play the odds in a favorable position.
4c. I like that the battlecry can be used on the same creature. I don't agree that it adds any depth though. It just creates an interesting difference between itself and Hearthstone.
4d. The user interface. Coming from Hearthstone, this one is severely lacking to say the least. Things don't feel as nice to interact with. Things don't respond quickly enough. Game board, card designs, and animations just aren't up to par. Audio isn't quite there. Everything seems less welcoming. The polish and more welcoming feel of Hearthstone is one of the main reasons I don't see this game getting a huge chunk of the Hearthstone audience. For someone who wants a causal game that is easy to get into and just feels nice to do even the simplest thing in, Hearthstone will still be way ahead.
5. It's a cool game. I'll definitely play it and enjoy it. I like the lore and game play. I don't see it competing with Hearthstone in a significant way.
To clear some stuff up:
1. The reward system had to be a bit more generous considering not all legendary cards are unique, and non-unique legendaries are limited to 3 per deck, instead of 1 per deck
4a. True that the laning system applies only to creatures attacking creatures, but considering that removal options in ESL are rather scarce, overcosted or (for most AoE removals) hit your lane/board as well, it makes sense to be limited in such a way.
4b. "Huge" is probably a wrong word in regards to the deck size. 50 Cards is not a huge deck (even in HS terms to be honest. I've yet to see any working competitive decks going (much) over the 50 cards minimum. Regarding runes and prophecies: it isn't as unlikely as you think, for example my current laddering deck (at rank 5 now) has 11 prophecy cards out of the 50 total, so the occurence of drawing a prophecy card of the rune break isnt rare at all. There are some decks which build on the prophecy keyword even more, thus the chance of drawing it actually go up by a lot. Additionaly, many taunt minions and removal cards (as well as shackle (freeze) minions/spells) have the prophecy keyword, so it hapens relatively often that you manage to interrupt the opponents plan after he breaks one of your runes.
4c. Maybe saying it adds depth isn't the correct statement, however it does add additional options when considering how to spend the battlecry
4d. Yes, the user interface is somewhat lacking. I didn't go much into it in my original post since the game is still in beta, so I guess UI changes and fixes might yet happen, since that is mostly a QoL and visual change, so it makes sense the devs left it out for the end. On the other hand I do like the more serious tone of the audio in ESL compared to HS.
So basically this is an HS clone. I played it a bit and can't really get over that fact. I may try it a bit more, but I think I'll stick to HS.
if you got only this by playing esl then its better to never play it. honestly i wouldnt like the hearthstone community to move onto esl as its the worse community in the history of videogames. i would prefer esl is played only by serious players. also yeah sorry but either 1) you havent played the game at all and youre lying or 2) youre really smart
well, no... the worst community was the D3 community lol
it still might be dunno, havent played in 2 years, just saying, that community was so bad it was comedy
I installed ESL this week and played quite a lot. I mostly like it. Some comments about it:
Like:
-Runes: Runes seem like a cool catchup mechanism. Cards that interact with runes are fun too.
-Lanes: I think that the most obvious way to fight HS as a cardgame is offering more depth and complexity and lanes maybe are a step in that direction. But right now It needs more work, just an aditional shadow lane seem a bit dull. Cards / archetypes that change the lane effect in real are desired but I suspect that they'll have thought on that
-Great variety for a beta: A lot of keywords that HS is surprisingly missing plus permanent effects
-Colors instead of classes: Yeah
-Much less RNG than HS: RNG is cancer in games where you want to win
Dislike:
-... but still some RNG: Seriously cards like brutal ashlander should be removed from the game.
-...specially with Prophecy: Prophecy is a terrible idea in my opinion. Seems cool but It is pure, evil RNG. Too swingy and random. The difference between playing a L bold from hand vs through Prophecy is huge. Playing a 2/5 guard for free when your opponent break your first rune is not cool.
-No control?: I know It is beta but right now are agression or tempo but i don't see any possibility of a cantrol archetype right now in the game. Huge (15+) amount of damage can be done out of nowhere so games tend to be fairy short
I agree with most of what you wrote, i.e. Brutal Ashlander is a 1-drop joke.
Disagree with Prophecy being a "terrible" idea though, I like that they had anti-SMOrc in mind with this function. They just need to nerf some P-cards is all, like your aforementioned 2/5.
EDIT: One interesting idea/change to combat your Prophecy concern is to bonus adjust based on what rune has just been broken. e.g. your aforementioned 2/5 guard would be something a lot smaller upon 1st rune break, but with gradually increasing power the more runes that have been broken.
I think the idea is that if you draw a strong prophecy card from a rune break, it's great value. But if you don't it's usually break even or even slightly undervalued.
Like the 2/6 mummy card. It's 5 (or 6?) mana if I recall. That's actually pretty bad stats. Sure it's Guard, saves you from aggro but overall it's a card that you put in your deck for anti aggro. You'd used it against an aggro deck anyways, but if you draw it from prophecy, it's just gravy.
Been playing since past weekend and having a blast. So far I'm almost exclusively playing story mode or solo arena, which really helps keeping anxiety at the minimum.
Best part is, even playing story mode and other vs AI stuff actually feels rewarding! I'm constantly getting new cards, decks, upgrades, etc. It may wear off over time or get toned down closer to actual release, but right now the game is so much more rewarding then HS. Heck, I finished a solo arena run yesterday and got a golden legendary, a pack, a deck (entire deck of new cards of varying rarity!) and a bunch of gold! Feels good, man!
I like the mechanics so far. Lanes are a refreshing change. Runes mechanic seems fair, although favourable to combo\OTK style decks. Not sure if prophecies are of any value, as you only have 5 chances of triggering them throughout the game and decks are larger.
Overall, really solid foundation, here's hoping for it to have any sort of commercial success to sustain updates post-release.
I have to say HS arena experience plays a big role - got full 7 wins in a versus arena run at my 3rd try :)
I'll have to give it another try, have only played one. Got Archer, started 3-1 and then played vs. two riDONKulous B/G decks that weren't even fair. Reminded me of HS Arena and thought, "OK, I'm done..."
