When I say 'Well played' at the end of a game, my intent is always 'GG'. If they added an actual emote for that, that'd be great. It'd mean less idiots responding with 'Thank you' as they lose.
I find it polite to say well played at the end of a match, so I always try to, win or loss. (Sometimes I miss it if I lose unexpectedly or something, but eh.)
How come you get to decide what is polite and what isn't?
Society decides. At no point in history was is considered honorable for the winner to rub it in the loser's face. In no activity other than some online gaming communities is it considered ok to "congratulate" the other person as you deliver the finishing blow.
I know you know it's not polite because I almost never see anyone say "well played" as they lose or concede, but they very often do it when they themselves win.
Hm does this hint that people in general think they are just saying "thanks for the game" or maybe you're just self-fiving yourself as you shoot that last fireball with a little smirk on your face?

Maybe EU players are just nicer, but here I'd say the amount of people who say "well played" when they lost and the ones who say it when they won is about the same.

I never say "well played" when I won, so I'm not fiving anyone, but even then emotes are all highly subjective, so there's no point to calling some form of them strictly impolite.
I almost always emote "well played" before I concede. That just makes sense to me. If I am conceding that means you had a well played match. If I have REALLY bad RNG I will tell my opponent well played as well. That is usually met with a "sorry that happened".
I had a match where I had Flamewaker and Bloodmage. I played Arcane Missile and every shot from the missile and the waker missed all of my opponents minions. I had to let him know that was "well played".
Of course I'm also 40 years old and have a better idea of how to carry myself in a competitive setting. where one must realize that no matter how important it all seems. It isn't important at all.
With the emotes, I say greetings at the start if I can remember to (and always if the opponent says it), I use well played when the opponent gets a good play (timber wolf/unleash, sorcerers apprentice archmage antonidas etc.) and also at the end of the game, regardless of the result. The only time I use sorry is when I get complete overkill (2 savage roars on a full board when opponent has 1 HP) and also when my opponent reveals a secret that is unfavourable for him/her (knife juggler into noble sacrifice). I spam oops then show (with vigorous mousing) what I was meant to do (like accidentally putting dire wolf alpha in wrong position to miss lethal). I use thankyou occasionally when I recieve a 'well played' for a good play.
but even then emotes are all highly subjective, so there's no point to calling some form of them strictly impolite.
If you read this forum long enough you'll notice no one complains that people don't "well played" them enough when they win. Strange, right? If it's considered polite, then why are there no complaints about rude opponents not saying "well played"?
Because by and large when you lose a game ( especially hearthstone ) it's frustrating and you don't need some snarky dude saying "good job champ" as they win the game anyway. Just look at the number of complaints about face hunter BM. When people lose to a frustrating deck, they start to consider any emote as people trying to make them angry.
I also never emote when I win or lose. I mostly emote when people get lucky because I'm pissed and it's stupid. Like when I miss 3 hits from arcane missiles on a 2/1 and stuff like that. Then I say "well played" and then everyone knows exactly what that means lol
I will usually say hello when a game start and either thank you or well played when the game has ended. Never before it has ended. What you read into it is an reflection of your intent when you are doing the same and not of your opponent's intent. If someone is not spamming it repeatedly there is no way to tell the meaning behind the emotes of an unknown person.
I do think it is poor manners to not concede when you are beat. But I would never berate someone with emotes if they didn't do it however. This seems to happen most often when I'm playing control warrior. IDK what it is about that deck but everyone thinks they have a chance to win right up till you deal lethal Perhaps we need a five star system for ranking other players after a match. It wouldn't really have any in game ramifications, but it would let you know who to squelch before the match starts.
I never concede, for two reasons. Usually I am busy completing daily quests which can include, killing minions, doing damage to the opponent hero, playing small minions or playing large minions. The same can also be true for my opponent. There is nothing I hate more than my opponent conceding when I am 2 damage or the death of one minion away from completing a quest and thus forcing me to play another game when my time is sometimes limited.
As I expect people to give me the opportunity to finish my daily quests I provide them the same opportunities I expect from them and thus I allow them to give the death blow, but I never drag out the game, If my opponent has lethal on board and there is no way I can win. I say thank you and give the turn back to them as soon as possible so that they can finish the game in any way they see fit.
And I do get that. My frustration with people not conceding is that I have very limited time to play the game. And sometimes those Control Warrior v. Control Priest games can get quite long.
Why do people emote this after one-sidedly trouncing someone? Do they not realize how much of an asshole they're coming across as, or is that the intent?
For me it's a bit like saying check mate in chess. You just say the game is over, and thank your opponent for the game.
Some are using emotes as a tool to disturb you, and some are certainly jerks as you can see when they try to had you to tell howmuch they care about your heatlh.
I say "Hello" in the beginning and "Well Played" at the end. I say "Oops" or "Sorry" during misplays, "Threaten" when they BM or play cancer, and say "Thanks" against cancer. If you're offended by that, then you're too sensitive.

Why do people get angry over emotes expressing gratitude? As mentioned above, not everyone is trying to upset you. Again, that's on YO
Then again, would you rather have someone use another emote such as "Threat" after beating you 30 to zip? Didn't think so. So unless you know for a FACT they're being ride intentionally, then simply say THANKS and move on w/ your day. It's not very productive to beat yourself up over something that might not even be a real "insult". For all you know, you're beating yourself up AND getting angry over an DIGITAL EMOTE that wasn't meant to be anything BUT what it actually means.. Lol.

Yes, actually.. at least then you KNOW the guy's being a jerk, but being honest about it.
"Well played" after a drubbing (and to be clear, I'm not talking those 10+ round matches where you simply could never get a tempo swing, I'm referring to those godhand vs crap draw 6 turn whoopings) seems at best disingenuous, but generally comes across as sarcastic and/or condescending.

You can find me here! Good luck everyone!
I usually only use 'Well played' at the end of a game I've won if my opponent said it first.
I havn´t read all of it...
Here´s what i do...
In case i got owned like you got... i say nothing... swearing behind the pc (i guess like evryone :D )
in case i owned someone... i emote /sorry
in case "I" really think he´s done quiet good... (doesn´t matter if win or loss) /well played

Since when does "well played" translate to "you suck, I'm way better, fag00t!!11"? You don't know if it's genuine or not.

Get thicker skin and realize this is just a game. Also, squelch is your friend...also, can mean gg: this is how I use it.
If you believe that a "Well Played" at the end of a match is an insult, it's probably because YOU would use it as an insult.
Ergo, it's quite likely YOU are the jerk.

last time i checked "Well Played" is not similar or equal to "I Kicked Your Ass, Eat it"
