Just wait a turn or 2 for a "Hello", then squelch. That's what I do every game and I'm extremely happy. The emote system is pointless so just turn it off. Also, I never use emotes for any reason.
Then again, would you rather have someone use another emote such as "Threat" after beating you 30 to zip?
Yes, actually.. at least then you KNOW the guy's being a jerk, but being honest about it.
"Well played" after a drubbing (and to be clear, I'm not talking those 10+ round matches where you simply could never get a tempo swing, I'm referring to those godhand vs crap draw 6 turn whoopings) seems at best disingenuous, but generally comes across as sarcastic and/or condescending.
Thats not the point I'm making though. It is, but it isn't.
It's literally & physically impossible to determine whether or not someone's being sarcastic or serious about said used emote.
Just because you get your behind spanked, whether it was because of horrible mulligan into crap hand on top of bad pulls VS "Godlike starting hand & pulls" as you mentioned, doesn't mean they're being jerks about it. I see your point that you would rather someone be honest & not two-faced. However this is discussion about those getting upset about an emote because THEY are the ones whom think it's supposed to be an insult disguised behind good manners.
I would rather have someone pretend to be nice opposed to being openly rude, at least on a video game that is. Don't need someone being rude & trying to bait me into an argument or something of that degree.

This was actually my original point; in those short blowouts I described, in what scenario is the user of the emote being genuine? How is that in any way a well played match (unless you were self-congratulating)?
The other situations people describe.. wherein they emote automatically/regardless of outcome, well that's also disingenuous. There may not have been any rude intent, but it can still be perceived poorly in that situation.
I try very hard not to be sarcastic with emotes. Yesterday I was playing against tempo mage, he plays a target dummy from Unstable Portal and I emoted "Sorry" because it sucks to get something that worthless from your portal.
I always say Hello and Well Played at start and end of a match, and almost never anything else. I only Squelch if they constantly spam threaten (normally hunters).. and I never really let any emotes bother me.
"Well played" followed by, or during, a winning play (doesn't mean if it's yours) - polite way of saying "thanks for the game".
"Well played" repeated over and over by a druid who waits till the end of the rope to show you his brilliant FoN+Savage Roar combo - that's being an asshole.
HS emotes are barely better than caveman grunts for any meaningful communication. I emote "well played" to almost any player who wasn't being intentionally annoying regardless of the level of competition. I assume in most games the player really did play as well as they could, so why not? I would shake hands with a RL opponent no matter how the game went; would you think I was "rubbing it in" if I won a game of chess without even losing a pawn and then offered a hand shake? Maybe you would, but I strongly disagree.
I think the e-mote system somewhat encourages people to use it to be rude. First, because you feel that the other person is constrained in their ability to insult your family/appearance/play, or whatever is important to you, wheras you're free of course to interpret your own communication however you want. People mostly talk to hear their own voice, anyway. And second, it plays perfectly into the passive communication style of a lot of people, where their worst fear is actually being cornered by a mod or another player on something they said. These passive/aggressives can shelter themselves with a sense of deniability for what they're doing.
That said, always interpreting an e-mote to be sarcastic has got to be self-projection. Especially in this case. If someone says "well played" at the end of any game, I'm just going to take that as well played. And I think most players know that a 6-turn beating is mostly due to draws, and no one should be insulted anway.
I have been known to be rather gratuitous with the "I am sorry" emote after i commit a good play.
What does that look like? Well, last night i played a shaman, spell bended one of his hexes, spell countered another AND spell countered his lightning storm all in one game, needless to say, i was very sorry that game.
i wish they just had a "GG" emote a "nice play" emote and a "that was bullshit" emote. that would be nice and that would be all i needed to communicate in a game. the emotes they currently have are really stupid.
like the threat emote... what is the point of that emote? to make someone laugh at you when you are irritated? bucking foopid sliz...

But hey, to each their own.
I disagree, and think it is not poor manners to concede if you're clearly beat.
You get more exp by not conceding, and some people are still leveling their characters.
as for me? I only squelch priests. lol

Ibn Fahd.
Unless it is being spammed or used specifically after a misplay, I see nothing wrong with it.
Am I the only one who gets hello'ed by jubilating face-hunters on the cathartic "unleash the hounds" game-winning-turn ?
"My life... for Aiùr."
I've generally only encountered this at the beginning of the ladder climb... People seem to be better-mannered once you break into single-digit ranks.
Disable emotes after victory or concede, problem solved. There's no reason other to be a jerk to emote after the game is over.
The uses of my "well played" emote includes but are not limited to:
1) My opponent makes a very spectacular play, or;
2) My opponent undermined my plan, or;
3) At the end of the game, to sort of say "Good games".
According to the OP, obviously I am an evil BMing troll.

Do you do it after beating someone in 5 turns?
"Well played" followed by, or during, a winning play (doesn't mean if it's yours) - polite way of saying "thanks for the game".
"Well played" repeated over and over by a druid who waits till the end of the rope to show you his brilliant FoN+Savage Roar combo - that's being an asshole.
Simple.

Well played does not matter to me as much as people saying thank you when you lose to them, that is just being a dick and its also why I auto mute.

There's a limited amount of emotes. "Well Played" is a about as decent a "Farewell" one as we have.

If you can't beat them, join them
I use threat when I'm playing friends. I don't use it ranked. I will use it in the Arena though.
sometimes i insta concede due to various reasons and they still say well played. players in this game are so stupid
